ABD Mickey hiking pin?

I got the following ABD pin from a trade:

ABD_Mickey_hiking_small.jpg

Can anyone tell me where this pin came from? A pin database said it was given for participation in a trip. But it doesn't fit the pattern of ABD pins I've seen. Most have text about the day of the trip that pin represents, or they are celebration pins or logo pins.

The date on the back is 2010.

At the start of a few trips 10+ years ago, a pin for the trip itself would be handed out at the start of trip welcome dinner followed by day of trip/location specific pins during the trip. The start of trip pins had the Adventures by Disney label like the one shown above.

Thanks for identifying this as a "start of trip" pin.

If anyone received this particular pin, can you share which trip and year? Thanks.

The "start of trip pins" for 2008-2011 featured the old Adventures by Disney logo with the river & sunset (as seen in my DIS avatar). As far as I know, it was the same design for all trips, with no specific pin for a specific departure. I didn't do an ABD in 2012, so it may be from then. The 2013 pin is just a black rectangle with "Adventures by Disney" and "Let's Adventure Together" in gold script. 2014 and 2016's pins were elaborate sunburst designs that said "Adventures by Disney" and "Est. 2005". I didn't do an ABD in 2015, but as far as I know, the start of trip pin for 2015 was the starburst 10th Anniversary pin. As far as I know, they haven't done the start of trip "Adventures by Disney" pins starting with 2016, except for starburst 15th & 25th Anniversary pins. So unless it's for 2012 or 2015 or pre-dates 2008 (which seems unlikely if it's dated 2010!) then it's for something else. Like maybe an Adventure Guide pin or something.

I'll post a photo of the pins I have once I get a chance.

The other possibility is it's from one of the ABD excursions Disney World or Aulani ran several years back? (Not a tour, but just excursions). Maybe was non-specific because of that?

I may see if one of the Adventure Guides I know can identify it.

We went on the WDW one (Backstage Magic) and received a different pin... I might be able to find it when I get home.

Thanks @sayhello. I got the yellow starburst pin (left) from a 2016 ABD trip and the white logo pin (right) from trading.

20_year_pin.jpg

I got the 20 year anniversary pin on my Wyoming trip this year. I've seen pictures of the 10 year and 15 year anniversary pins. I assume the 15 year pin is scarce because that was 2020 and hardly any trips ran that year due to COVID. Anybody have a 15 year pin? I wonder what ABD did with their stock of 15 year pins...

I would be stunned if the Mickey hiking pin was a guide pin.

I have the yellow starburst from 2016 also (Danube River Cruise). The other one looks like the one I got in 2008 for my first ABD (Southwest Splendors). The color scheme and lettering changed in 2009 to what's on my avatar. I don't know if the same pin was given out before 2008.

I also got the 20 year pin this year for Backstage Magic. And I agree, the 15 year one is probably pretty scarce. I have to admit, I actually acquired one off of Ebay a few years ago...

I contacted one of the Adventure Guides I know, and just heard back. She's Guided for a LONG time. She says she doesn't think she'd ever seen yours before. She asked if it says "Adventures by Disney" on the back, or "Walt Disney World", or something like that? She said if it's just the year, then it's probably a pin someone created themselves. I did spot check, and it looks like the pins I got on ABDs actually *say* ABD on the back.

The back of the Mickey hiking pin doesn't say Adventures By Disney, but it has the Mickey logo back and other Disney markings. It's also listed in the PinPics database at https://pinpics.com/pin/159708/ and at least 5 other people claim to own it.

So I don't think it is a fan-made pin. I thought maybe this was not distributed as part of an ABD trip but the database indicates it was.

I am aware of one ABD pin that appears to have been sold through Imagineering, with Oswald as a guide. I don't have it. The database page is https://pinpics.com/pin/126231/

I agree. That back looks legit. I guess some more sleuthing is called for. Too bad you can't ask the 5 other people who own it!

And that Oswald pin is totally cool! We did not get an Imagineering pin on my Backstage Magic tour. In fact, they didn't even have any Imagineering pins to purchase!

On my So Cal short escape ABD, one of the pins of the day was about Imagineering. Maybe they discontinued that and have different pins for the So Cal trips.

Mickey's of Glendale (the gift shop at Imagineering) didn't have any pins for sale? Wow. I've heard that recently Disney pin collecting has gotten out of hand, but didn't realize that meant Imagineering was out of pins.

What pin did you get for that day instead? We also got the one Eastridge shared on ours.

This was not where I thought it was, but I did finally find the one from Backstage Magic in WDW. It has Adventures by Disney on the back.

Oh, I *did* get that Backstage Magic pin, just slightly re-designed (it now has the sorcerer's hat perched on a corner!)

I also got the ABD themed one Eastridge just posted! I was talking about the Oswald pin that Eastridge posted a link to earlier. Plus, I wanted a pin *from* Imagineering that *said* Imagineering. I got a ton of pens, but no pin.

No, I did get that ABD pin. But I was buying pins from each location, too. I like to add them to my lanyard. I got a Studios pin at the Studios store, but Mickey's of Glendale had no pins that said Imagineering. I did get a 70th Anniversary pin there, but it turned out they were already on sale at Disneyland.

I really need to take some photos to post. :)

Ok, so Mickey's of Glendale did have pins for sale, but not ones that said Imagineering?

When I got this Imagineering pin, the store was well stocked with many variations of this pin. I guess they no longer carry it. It's a tiny pin, just the width of a lanyard.

Nope. Nothing like that, unless I was totally blind (but I'm pretty sure I asked them). Maybe they were just out of stock? Darn it!!

This was the Imagineering pin in 2022 and 2023, with two sizes available. They had other park pins in Mickey's of Glendale, but this was the only Imagineering-specific one.
