ABD Backstage Magic - Summer 2010 Edition!

We arrived at Newark at 4:45 AM EST, Checked in for our 6:30 AM EST flight. We landed at Memphis at 9:20 AM CT (ahead of schedule) waited for on tarmac for 10 minutes for our terminal to be clear. The captain thought he was a comedian – Made a joke that Elvis was at our gate giving a press conference. We then went to our next flight waited for 10 more minutes and boarded our last leg from Memphis to LAX. We had landed 40 minutes early and we figured that our car would not be there yet but when we got to baggage he was there. I was asked if I was an actor by some scientologist guy and I said I didn’t want to buy his books or make a donation…. We were driven to the Renaissance Hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted by our Adventure guides, Mike & Dean.

After choosing lunch for the following day at the Jim Henson Studios, I chose to have a salad, Mike chose to have a cheeseburger. Our room was not ready yet so we decided to take a walk over to In and Out burger. We both got cheese burgers and fries. After lunch we decided that since we had a while before dinner that we would walk around Hollywood. We walked down Hollywood Blvd. They were premiering Cats and Dogs tonight so Gamins Chinese Theater. We would have to wait till tomorrow to see that. We walked all the way from the start of the walk of fame and turned around to get the stars on the other side of the street. We had found Walt Disney’s star and I just had to get a picture of me with it. By this time we got a call that our room was ready so we. Strolled back to the hotel to pick up our room keys. We got our keys and met several of our fellow adventures in the Lobby (Pete and Walter, Kristen, Nicole, Jeff and Stacy). We chatted a while finally putting faces to names of people we chatted with on the boards. It felt like we were meeting old friends. After a while we headed up to see our room. We still had a lot of time before dinner and we decided to see the rest of the Hollywood walk of fame. Mike was on a quest to find Audrey Heparn’s star for a friend at work.

We had seen all of the start (except for the ones in front of the Chinese Theater). It was lots of Walking. Along the way we found a second hand store and found they had 2 Disney pins(Pirate of the Caribbean from Hong Kong pins for $9 each) Mike asked if I wanted them and the shopping begun… The gentleman behind the counter sold them to us for $9 for both so we already got a discount. It was getting close to dinner time so we went to the room. I showered and changed got gifts for the other adventurers and went down to meet everyone. Before dinner we had taken our first picture with the ABD paddle in front of the Twist sculpture. I had handed out all of the Journals I had made for everyone( More about My Journal on the way home later) and Pete handed out Swag form the DisUnplugged Podcast. We were given Visors that said ABD 2.0. They were very nice. We walked up to dinner and had started our game show. The contestants were John , me , Pam, and Wayne. When Pam walked over she asked me to let her win. I felt bad so I kept my hand away from the buzzer and only answered the hard questions like What was the fastest attraction at Disneyland( I’m not going to tell you the answer here) and everyone was surprised that I knew that. But hey I don’t call myself DisneyRob for nothing. John had won the gameshow and won a nice Photo album. The rest of us won a Vinylmation Mickeys. They must have sealed it with steel carbonate because it was so hard to open it. Mine was a crockodile. I past it around the table for all to see. We chatted and got to know everyone( We all knew that we would be a great group and knew we would make lifelong friends). We all served a chicken dinner… was not terrible but was not the greatest meal during the trip. After desert mike and I headed back up to our room we were exhausted (we hadn’t slepted the night before before because we were so excited) . as soon as our head hit the pillow we were both out…..

Stay tuned for our second Night and as soon as I go through pictures I’ll post them!

Yes I feel really bad for all of us that had such a wonderful adventure to have that be the last memorie for all of us... hopefully when we write our trip reports we will recall and have happier memories and forget our troubles of leaving such a wonderful time. Mike and I had cereal this morning and it felt empty not being able to associate with all of our new expanded family. breakfast jsut seemed so empty this morning with out you guys...

I already miss you all!!!!

Ok I'm vaclemted now.....

Love Rob and Mike

Oh, now you've got me all teary too! I miss everybody, and you're right about it not being at all the same having breakfast just the two of us! :sad1:

I'm so sorry about everything paper in your luggage being ruined, especially your gorgeous journal! I wonder if someone could sprinkle some pixie dust on you and get you the Disneyland and DCA maps to keep your collection complete??? There are more than a few locals who ought to be able to help, even if they aren't the exact copies you picked up yourselves. I am so relieved that your MoG and Club 33 merchandise made it safely!! :yay:

Well Your wish (as well as mine is granted) Jeff and Stacy(Love you guys) have extra maps and paper products that they are willing to share with me.

about the journal I can always make another one just worried about trying to remember everything for my Trip reports and Scrapbook. but I think between Mike and I we'll get it done.

:thumbsup2Awesome retelling of the first night, Rob! Jeff wishes he got to go to In-n-Out Burger! Thanks for helping us relive the trip! We can hardly wait for the next installment!

Wow - I'm so sorry you had such a horrible time at LAX! I remember how much you didn't want to open and repack your bags in front of everyone at the airport! I hope your head has recovered from the pounding on the counter. I'm pretty sure LAX is the gateway to Hell itself after our horrible time there. At least we managed to get to our gate just in time, only for the flight to leave 2 hours late. Apparently they chose to have no baggage handlers available despite the thousands of people leaving on Delta at that hour, so nobody was available to load the plane and everything sat on the tarmac for over an hour. We were on the plane at the gate for about 1 1/2 hours. Our connecting flight left while we were still in the air on the first flight.

:thumbsup2You are 100% correct: LAX is the gateway to hell!!

Rob, Anne and I would be glad to send some paper items to you to, to replace some of what you lost. We don't have a lot, but we do have WOC fast passes, some post cards they gave us, one of our 55th Anniv park maps and some Grand CA items. Just email your mailing address to us at relspeak@charter.net. If there is something else, tell us and we will see if we have it.

I second that! Wonderful retelling of the first day! I'll be so excited to read more...it is sad that you don't have your journal to continue all you wrote during the trip, but hopefully enough memories will come back.

After I read this, we checked out the thread. We signed up again! We just couldn't help it; we loved touring with you all so much. We miss you all already!:grouphug:

REALLY!?!?!? That taunting thread has me drooling too, but so does that London/Paris/DL Paris trip. Where can I find a bucket of money??

LAX is the worst!!! I have a nightmare luggage story too (although mine is mostly my own doing, and not directly related to LAX) - will tell it after I put my kids to bed. I think I have slept more since I got home from the trip than I did on the entire trip combined!

Money - Don't you have a tree? if you want I can give you a clipping of mine...LOL

Sleep - I think I've been more asleep than awake since I arrived home. I couldn't aford to sleep that much on the trip.

Stacy - I'm so sorry you had that experience at LAX with your luggage! I wasn't sitting with you at breakfast so didn't hear your story, but I once had to redistribute my luggage in public and it was humiliating -- ugh! What a horrible end to an amazing trip!

Rob - glad you got your stuff back, but I'm so sorry some of it was ruined! And your journal of all things - how awful! I'm so glad so many of us are doing trip reports - I think we will all help each other remember any details we may have forgotten. I enjoyed reading your first installment - hope to get mine going soon!

OK, so this is my story.

After hearing Joe Yakovetic talk about his artwork at our farewell dinner, I really wanted to check it out in Off the Page at DCA where he mentioned some of it was. Nichole and I both liked two different prints: one he had mentioned at the dinner, which was the carousel with Walt and Lillian in the mirror, and the other which was Disneyland on opening day. We both decided on the opening day print. Neither of us could quite swing the $6000 for the original, or the $450 for the giclee version, but $35 for a print was manageable. You can see both prints here.

Packing up to leave was a challenge. I had come carry-on only on the way out, and packed a bag inside a bag for souvenirs for the trip home, but neither of them was big enough for the print, which also came matted. So I decided that I would just carry it loose, no biggee.

Going through security at LAX was my first hurdle. I removed my laptop, my liquids and gels, took off my shoes (ewww, I really hate that part) and my ever-present hoodie and put them all in separate bins, along with my suitcase and backpack. I put the print on the belt, but as soon as it got to the rubber finger thingees in front of the scanner, the thingees would push the print backwards since it was so light. I told the security agent it wouldn't go through, about to ask if he could hand scan it, and he snapped that it had to go through the machine (c'mon, it's a piece of paper, for crying out loud!). I ended up getting another bin and laying it on top (it was too big to fit inside) and it went through, but someone else's stuff had gone through in the meantime.

I walked through the machine and collected my stuff, putting my shoes on first (have I mentioned how much I hate that part!!) and just sort of grabbing everything and taking it over to a bench to put it all back together. I repacked and started walking off to my gate when someone came up behind me and said "Did you forget your painting?" OMG - I ran back to the security station and picked it up - that was close! (foreshadowing)

I flew from LAX to JFK without incident. I got off the plane at JFK for my 2 hour layover and found a place to camp out.

After a smoothie, a little Kindle app reading and a lot of waiting, I finally got on a plane again and flew to ROC.

As we touched down, my blood ran cold. I could not remember putting my print in the overhead bin with my other bags.

My first thought was "Damn, that's $35 down the drain."

Then I though, well, maybe I'll just mention it to the crew here. So I told the group who say goodbye as you leave the plane, and the captain walked off with me to ask what could be done. They sent me down to Baggage Services at the luggage carousel to see if they could get ahold of someone at the gate at JFK (Gate 8, Jet Blue waiting area!). Poor Franco really didn't seem to know what to do. He pulled out a phone list and started dialing numbers, all of which said (I could hear it from my place across the desk), "This number is no longer in service." I said to him, "I guess that phone list is a little out of date."

Long story short (bwa, ha ha!), he finally got a working number but no one was answering. He told me he would keep trying, and call me either way later on.

Which he did!

A few hours later he left a message saying my print had been found! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: He left another number I was to call to arrange to get it to me. I called that number and they asked me when I would be picking it up. :scared1: Ummm, never! I asked if they could put it on a plane to Rochester (friends there offered to get it there for me), but they said I could either pick it up at JFK or have it shipped via FedEx at my expense. Heavy sigh. I recited my FedEx account number from memory.

It should be here by Wednesday. I hope it's really my Opening Day print after all! :)

I don't know if anyone else was keeping track, but I wore my pedometer faithfully for the entire trip. If you were wondering how much walking we were all doing, here is what I can tell you about my mileage. I know many of you outlasted Alan and I, so you can just use our mileage as a starting point.

Sunday-9.2 miles-we did spend the morning at Disneyland before heading to Hollywood; Monday 5.6; Tuesday 9.0; Wednesday 8.6; Thursday 12.9;
Friday 6.7 My total for the ABD trip was exactly 52 miles. The daily average was 8.7.

I wish the trip were starting all over again. I loved every minute of it. All of the activities and events were wonderful, as I expected they would be after listening to the ABD podcast 3 times. But even better than the activities was the chance to do them with all of our fellow Adventurers! I can't find the words to end this paragraph that would adequately describe how much this trip meant to Alan and I. Thank you all for your comraderie and friendship. It means the world to us.

Anne

oooh...a tree? Can I have some too? I'm with Kristen...I would love to sign up for another Backstage Magic but have my eye on that Knights and Lights trip. I need to borrow that tree for a while.

Rob - I'm glad you and Mike received your luggage. I too have some extra paper souvenirs if you need some (fast passes, etc)

Kristen - I hope your print makes it to you intact!

Anne - My feet and back feel every inch of that walking...but it was worth it!

I'd love a clipping from the money tree too! Of course, I have a brown thumb, so it may not last very long... :lmao: We probably have some extra paper souvenirs too...let us know what you're still missing...

Crossing fingers for Kristen's print to make it to her intact & ready for enjoyment at home!

My whole body feels all the walking and carrying of "stuff" and shopping, but I have no regrets at all! Well, except the need to go back to work tomorrow... :sad2:

Hello everyone!

John has made it back to Switzerland and I am still here in California with my two boys for another couple of weeks. We had a very easy and uneventful flight back from Disneyland to Oakland. Orange County airport is great! And fortunately, no troubles yet with our luggage - though I do still have to get the bags to Zurich.

We had such a wonderful time on the adventure. I really felt like royalty the whole trip. OK, sometimes I felt like I was on Oprah with all those surprises. My kids didn't ask a single question about where we were, so we have managed to keep our little secret that we went to Disneyland to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Thanks to Pete and Walter, Kevin, Dreams Unlimited, ABD and everyone in our group for such a magical trip! It was really, really special and I will treasure it forever. I especially am looking forward to the trip reports (as well as photo albums) since John and I basically took no photos. With all those cameras out, I figured you all had us covered.

Thanks again everyone. It was a very special trip.

:eek:Oh Kristin! I hope they get your print back to you! I can't believe we all had such difficulties getting out of LAX (aka the Gateway to Hell! thanks, Lisa)!
You are absolutely right about repacking being humiliating. And if we didn't have to undress to get through the metal detectors, you wouldn't have had your first problem. It's like torture!

I've started my trip report over on the ABD board. I have the link below...my pictures didn't turn out great. I hope to see better ones from you guys.

Great start Christy! I think your photos are just fine!

I'm going to do one too, but I need to organize my photos just a tad (understatement of the year) first! I kept a journal (thanks Rob!) but it was mainly the highlights - I want to write it all down before I forget the details!
