“And I want to thank all the female nominees tonight for helping demonstrate to my young daughter that elite is not a bad word, it’s an aspirational one. Honey, look around, smart girls have more fun, and you’re one of them.”

I loved what he said at the end of his speech on Monday.

Thoughts?

I'm more and more disgusted by the things I see and hear come out of teenage girls mouths. They have no pride in their attire. Either they are completely exposing themselves or they are in sweatpants. They are more interested in socializing than school work or thinking about their futures.

Thoughts?

Teenage girls more interested in socializing than school work, and wearing clothes that "grown ups" don't like??? Sounds like age appropriate behavior. It was like that when I was a teenager back in the 70's and for the most part we all grew up to be responsible adults, who are pretty smart.

I'm sorry you haven't met more interesting, bright, and dedicated teenage girls. Maybe you'll meet some as your daughter ages.

My thought is that you are a very judgemental person, disgusting, really?

My dd's are 14 and 19. They are neither exposing themselves or wearing sweatpants.:confused3

They are interested in socializing and school work. The two are not mutually exclusive.

My oldest is in college and my youngest is already looking at colleges.

How old are your kids?

I believe her daughter is 1.

My thought is that you are a very judgemental person, disgusting, really? Are you asking me or telling me?

What are you so upset about? I'm confused why are you so mad?

I have no idea who he is, or why he'd say that. But I agree with the others, I don't know what teens you're seeing, but most of the ones I see (and the ones my dd13 knows) are nothing like you describe. They all dress well and study hard and think a lot (too much maybe) about their futures.

I agree with Aaron Sorkin's quote. "Elite" is not a bad word.

I do not agree with your opinion of teen girls. Makes me wonder what kind of people you hang out with. :confused3

My son's female friends are smart, decent, hard working young women. I adore them and like having them around. My God daughters are 23 and 26, also decent and hardworking young women. I drove a school bus for 7 years. One time, I found a young woman pretty disgusting but she was the exception-definitely NOT the rule and she never returned to the bus after that day. She had been expelled. OP-where in the world have you been to see all this behavior? And yes, our young people should aspire to a high level of living.

I thought it was a nice inspirational thing to tell his daughter. I'm not sure why all the other posters are ragging on the OP?:confused3

Children learn from role models, mentors and by parents guiding them into who those are. The Golden Globes, other than Ricky Gervais, are about honoring and celebrating achievements and the best of the best. I'd rather a parent point out women who actually did hard work to accomplish something, instead of the likes of Paris Hilton, whose claim to fame was due to spreading her legs in a porno film she did with an ex-BF.

Wasn't there a thread a couple weeks ago about a dance show, with 6 year old girls prancing around in lingerie? Many people thought that was inappropriate, and they wouldn't want their little girls prancing around like that and thinking that's appropriate (and to grow up into teens who do that, too -- which is the OP's point.) Interesting how things change, day to day on the DIS. :sad2:

I'm not sure I like how he said what he said, I can't figure out what I don't like about it though. I like the general message.

I do think you are wrong to assume that just because a teenage girl socializes or wears sweatpants that they have no interest in their future. Are there some teenage girls out there that don't care, yes but don't lump all teenage girls into one category.

Well, I can honestly say that I was a teenage girl once. I wore sweatpants almost everyday and socialized A LOT! I went to one party after another. But that doesn't mean I wasn't concerned about my future, because I was.

Even with my sweatpants and partying, I still managed to go to college, graduate with 2 degrees and find a pretty high-paying job, marry my best-friend and have a wonderful child. I'm probabaly the exception to the rule though. ;)

Is the OP the same OP from the SIL baby shower thread?

Amongst others, as well.

As to the subject at hand. Certainly "Elite" is not a bad word, I agree with that. "Elitist" is, however. Taking the attitude that someone's future is based upon their attire is an elitist attitude.

I think Sorkin's comments and the assertions of the OP are 2 completely unrelated topics.

Are you implying that I'm "hanging out with them". Just passing SOME of them in malls or seeing them outside. Their conversations seem really sketchy.

Back to the quote, I think Sorkin is great for saying this on such a public plain. It's so sad that shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" are becoming more and more popular. Where is the sense or pride in oneself going?

Sorkin's quote: loved it and I was glad DD13 was in the room to hear it!!!!:)

you thoughts: not so much. All I am gonna say about it is this: there's nothin' wrong with sweat pants on teens!!!!!:lmao:

Celebrating smart is what pays Sorkin's bills. He is the current living king of brilliant dialogue; the intellectual heir of Robert Benchley and Charles McArthur. However ...

The man has lousy luck in personal relationships. His history says that he has a tendency to push too hard and to be overly judgemental and dismissive of positions that he disagrees with. His daughter will have to grow up with that, too.

That said, I'll always gladly pony up the cash for a ticket to anything the man writes; I do love his work.
