I was just told that my husband's company is putting a freeze on vacations through the end of September. They are telling the people who have already had their requests approved that they can't take the time off. We leave for WDW in 18 days!!

There is a chance that my husband could lose his job if we go...I asked my hubby what he wanted to do, and he said that we are definately going to WDW and we will risk him losing his job..

I am so mad!

That is terrible! What type of job does that? I work in a hospital and they tried that one year when there was a stike of the union help, my boss let me go since I spent the money for the vacation! Hope that they will be reasonable with you. get a copy of the vacation policy,I bet it dosen't address this and they will let him go. Good luck! :goodvibes

I can sympathize. we booked our trip like 7 months ago and then 5 months ago my husbands company took pay cuts for everyone and took away their vacation time, sick time, and personal days. My first thought was to cancel but we decided not to and see what happens closer to the time but here we are 28 days away and they still haven't given anyone there time back yet.
either way we are still going

Have you bought anything that is non refundable for the trip, such as plane tickets? He should approach them and let them know how much he has invested in this trip, maybe they will let him go. If not, he should tell them that he will stay but expects to be fully compensated for his loses. After all, he would not have planned the trip if he hadn't been approved for the leave.

That might put a fire under them if they know how much it might cost them...

:grouphug:

The plane tickets are non-refundable, I think.

We have been planning this vacation for 5 months and have saved and penny pinched to make it possible.

This is so stupid....There is no way in he== that we are going to cancel this vacation..

First of all let me say how awful for you and I am sorry for the stress that this is putting on you. It's stressful enough waiting for your WDW vacation to finally come, say nothing of having it maybe yanked from under you.

I know when some businesses are having a difficult time, they try to "fix" their problem by over reacting. If it is a manufacturing plant and they have a huge order or backlog that they have to get done they may try to cancel everyone's vacation. But I agree with SEAlla on what you should do.

Have your husband schedule a meeting with his supervisor. Have him explain that his vacation days were submitted for approval on (fill in the date) and was approved. It was only after this approval that he planned and made reservations for a WDW trip. Much of this trip has already been paid for and parts (such as airline tickets)are non-refundable, other parts would come with a cancellation fee. While he understands the position that the company is in, cancelling his vacation at this time would cost quite a bit of money. Ask the supervisors help for a solution to this problem.

If the supervisor refuses to help then ask for a meeting with the supervisors' supervisor... all the way up to the CEO. I bet the company will reconsider. Although I'm sure they would still like everyone who has vacation time scheduled that could reschedule to reshedule, I would think that those that would take a $$$$ loss could not reasonably be asked to do so.

Good luck, please keep us posted

That happened to us a few years back. We had a sailing trip planned, had made all the deposits and bought the plane tix, when DH's boss decided he needed to go to an important meeting instead. He prepared a memo stating all the things that have been suggested here and presented it to his boss. DH's demeanor was very professional and he nevered copped an attitude or anything. The company did end up compensating us for the lost money.

Interestingly, the very important meeting never happened. And we were stuck in Minnesota in February dreaming of the warm Caribbean water. DH got a new job a little while later. :)

I had a similar thing happen. I have a part time/work from home job, and my boss has 3 meetings a year that he expects all of us to attend. Death is about the only excuse to miss. Normally, this is not a big deal.

In January, he announced that the Sept meeting was going to be Sept 10th, and that it would NOT be moved. Based on that and DH's travel schedule, I booked a vacation for Sep 24 thru Oct 2. In Jun, my boss announced the meeting was changed to Sep 17th. Then a few weeks later, it got moved again to Sep 24th. I talked to my immediate supervisor and explained the whole situation, and I do not have to attend the meeting, but it is stange how the immovable meeting moved twice and the second time onto my vacation date.

Well if you can show that you have non-refundable items that you purchased DUE TO THE PREVIOUS APPROVAL, I would request that either I be allowed to go, or request that I be allowed to get another approval on another date, and the company compensate for any money that was non-refundable.

If they refuse to do either, I would look for another job as that is just disrespectful to an employee.

My mother was coming down over July 4th and they tried to take her vacation to Disney with us, away from her at the last minute as well. However she showed proof of a hotel purchase that was not fully refundable at that point. They then allowed her to go.

I'm in the publishing/advertising business, and I moved my original Disney vacation that I was supposed to take this week to 9/2-9/10-we work on deadlines all the time, and the deadline was supposed to be today. So I moved my vacation-and saved money and got free dining! Now they've moved the book publish date to 9/2! And I'll be gone! and I'm going anyway. Yes, they'll be mad at me, yes, I won't be done with everything-but no one is going to die. But it does make for a very panicked week this week!

I don't care, I'm going to have fun anyway!! :moped: :cool1:

Well it's one thing if the vacation was denied in the first place.

It's another thing when it's been approved and then they want to take it away.

My view as someone who manages a department is: If they were approved and I want to have them stay, I can ask them, but if they want to go, there is no moral way I can punish them for that. Unfortunately probably not ever boss agrees with that philosophy.

However they should comp their employees in some way, shape or form if they stay. I know many companies provide an extra few days paid time off for doing things like this to their employees.

:wizard: Good luck, I hope it works out for you. My sisters company a couple of years ago turned around in Nov and told all employees they were cutting hours until the new year. Nice xmas gift for a single mom to be forced to take 2 days off a week. I am sending pixie dust!!! :wizard:

:guilty: That's not right. I guess if they don't want to allow time off, that's one thing, but your DH should definitely (respectfully) let his supervisor know that based on the previous vacation time approval, he made plans, and that they should be prepared to compensate him for the airfare, and whatever else was non-refundable. If they are not willing to do that or excuse his absence, then I'd say DH has a rotten boss, and should start looking for another job, if possible. I know that's not always easy, and maybe the pay at his job is really good, in which case it would force him to eat the loss which would really stink. Good luck and pixie dust! :wizard:

Looks like you might need alittle pixie dust. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: I'm hoping that everything will work out good for you and your husband in the long run.

That absolutely stinks! :( It happened to my uncle over Christmas. A bunch of us booked a trip to Disney, and after the time off was approved and the money was spent, he was told his company had to work over Christmas and he couldn't take the time off. Needless to say we were all really upset that he couldn't go. Especially since he's never been to Disney and I was looking forward to dragging him all over the place! :p

That's a difficult position to be in. I would absolutely go on the trip anyway!

Sorry this is my 1st time to post a reply so i had to make sure i was doing it right. My job is doing the same thing. I just starting a new job in March. and the day I started working I asked for Thanksgiving week off to go on my 1st ever trip to diz with my dh and dd. Everything was Ok----Until 2 weeks ago, when another employee who had been here for 5 years decided she wanted the same week off. she has been here longer-she gets the week off! The problem Dont laugh everyone--she is going to a hair cutting conference with her husband 2 cities over , I want to go to DIZ and its paid for. :confused3 I asked my husband what to do, and he just said to call in sick and get a drs excuse for those days. (we have sick leave and vacation days) So I think we have our problem figured out!!! But good luck with your trip! I know how you feel

Umm... Where are you getting this doctor's excuse??? I don't know many MD's who will "make" one up for you.

I will be honest, I think what your company is doing is wrong, but I would fire you if I found out you lied about the sick days and would have grounds for it.

Don't quit over it. Don't sign a letter of resignation. Let the company fire you. If you quit you have no chance of gettting unemployemnt. If you are fired you have some (not perfect) chance of getting unemployment.

But before going that far, lay out all the nonrefundable items and ask the company to reimburse you. Your chances of collecting umemployment are better if you show you gave the company the choice of letting you go on vacation or paying for the losses, as opposed to simply leaving on vcation.

Today's automobile gripe -- Can't tell whether the dome light switch is on or off until after getting out of the car and locking the door.

my hubby's manager decided to let him have the vacation. He first asked if we could reduce our vacation by 3 days...I don't think so........

Thank you for all of your support!!!!
