I spent the first part of this kid's life telling him to "stop wrestling!", so I guess it makes sense that he joined the Jr. High wrestling team:rolleyes: I admit, it was hard watching some kid pressing his arm on my son's throat:eek: I am now oficially counting down the days until Babe Ruth League starts!

There are certain sports I want my kids to avoid -- football followed by wrestling. It's pretty funny because my parents are huge wrestling fans. I've been out of h.s. for 25 years and they still attend all the wrestling matches including the state finals. They have 4 grandsons and none have shown an interest in wrestling. Good luck, I've been dragged to many meets in my day. The worst part is the ones who would get continually hurt, popping out knees etc., but would keep on going. I had a friend who was almost a state champ, continually injured, got a full scholarship, dropped out after one semester.

Hi... Jake has been wrestling since 6th grade. He enjoys the independent yet team nature of the sport. He now wrestles heavyweight which is a huge class... 220-275..... he is at the low end.. he has wrestled some big fellas.. and a couple of girls when he was in Jr. hi!

He is undefeated this season...... however today the doc dx'd him with pneumonia..:( He will miss two tournaments for sure....
He hopes to be ready to wrestle in 10-14 days..... ah we will see about that for sure!

Tips for mom's watching their kids wrestle
1. Do not let them practice those silly theatrical moves by the so called wrestlers on tv! LOL..... lots of theater going on with the tv fella's

2. Encourage your student to wrestle at a healthy weight. Do not let them do silly weight loss stunts or tricks they pick up from the other kids.... and some of them are absurd.. I had a kid trying to make weight.. the last 1/2 pound.. by spitting on the long drive to the event..... Lord have mercy.. I explained saliva just replaces itself!

3. Do not yell "go sweetie" "stick 'em baby" or "C'mon ref get that jerk off my kid" LOL

Yes.. I have done all of number 3 at least once! DS gave me my list of do's and don'ts if I were to cont' to attend his meets!

Have fun! Wrestling can build self esteem and independence.. it also involves quick critical thinking. Ya know I would have been hard pressed to say any of this before Jake took up the sport. But it is all true. oh and I forgot number 4
4. Encourage your teams good sportsmanship! Being a good winner is as important as being a good loser! Be a class act!

As a Mom, how do you NOT jump the kid and, "wrestle" him yourself?? I couldn't even watch my brother wrestle when we were younger and, I used to beat him up myself all the time!

Jr High wrestling is tough. My older DS tried it when he was in 8th grade - he's a big kid and was matched up with other big kids - only THEY were experienced! I couldn't handle it when the Mom of my son's opponent yelled "squeeze him!" I just lost it! I never went back - I think DS was looking for a "way out" too - he quit after the first match!
Hang in there!

Mom of a hs varsity wrestler here. Going to the meets is tough. Tournaments are worst. So far 2 tournaments and one meet. My son has only won one match. It's so hard to watch this, but he loves it.

My son has been wrestling for 4 yrs now. He is 9!

I think it is bit addicting! When he first started, I was determined to go to 1-2 tournaments a year. His first tournament he won 1st place, came home with a 18inch trophy and we have wrestled every sunday from Dec.-March since then!

He gets better and better each year, last year he was 31-9!

This year he is a 9 yr old in a 9-10 yr old age bracket, it has been a tough year, because usually at this age group, the "fish" have been weeded out and everybody who is still wrestling in youth wrestling have been successful! He is just 8-8 this year, but has been wrestling his butt off!

We wrestling in the State of Illinois, from Chicago to St. Louis! We get up at 400am every Sunday almost, unless we splurge and spend the night at the location the night before!

This weekend we have it easy...only 60 miles to Mattoon!!!

Wrestling is a great sport for individual achievement. Ty( my son) has not had to make a decision between basketball and wrestling at this age( he plays both), but I know when he get in JR HIGH, that decision will have to be made.....It will be hard to give up on either for him!
