cheapskate question of the day...... I HAD AAA for our whole family, but it has lapsed. I was considering getting it for just myself, and using for discounts, etc. Is that allowable, to drop the other members and just have the one card? I realize this probably means they don't get a tow if needed.... (just fr staying at the Dolphin,it saves 20% on food at Picabu, that's around 10-12 per meal)

I believe you can still use the tows for them with your card if needed. I've done it with someone who wasn't even family. Just once you run out of free tows you're out!

We have added and dropped various kids over the years, so yes you can do it. In fact, right now I don't have AAA, but my DH and 2 of our kids are on our account.

As long as you are with the person being towed, your AAA is good.

You only need one card for discounts etc. From what I have read in my husbands AAA information and understand to be the case is that you can only use AAA for others if you are in the car with them. Any car that you are riding in is covered.

Also if you are booking a vacation package for another family that does not have AAA our agent told us that they would have to buy a AAA membership if they received the AAA discount. However if they got another discount not through AAA but direct than they would not need to have a AAA membership of there own.
For example when we booked with other family members some did not have AAA but because we got the free dining discount through Disney and did not use the AAA discount they did not have to purchase a membership. However if there was no other discount available besides the AAA discount than they would have had to buy a membership.

Also I don't know if it was only offered in some areas or to only certain people but I received an offer in the mail a couple of months back from AAA that gave you a 2nd membership for free when you purchased the first. You might want to ask your local office about it.

We specifically do not mind paying the extra so that all family members are accounted for with AAA.

The only user of services in the past year has been DD - she needed a tire changed. Not something that either DH or me could have handled "by being there with our card" as she was at her college - 4 hours from our house.

I personally would not "cheap out" by dropping family members.

Hmmm good info! thanks... it looks like I could get a single card for 48.00 for the year.... which is way better than the 128.00 I was paying....we used to use AAA a lot before we got our newer reliable car, but now it would be cheaper to just pay for a tow if needed, which hasn't happened in years... I was thinking the discounts would be useful when traveling, like restaurants and hotels, etc. Thanks!

If you are going to keep the membership just for the travel discounts, make sure you actually see what sorts of discounts it will get you to be certain it will save you money in the end. I have AAA, but find I only rarely use it for travel discounts, and usually when I do the discount is small. I often find better discounts by Googling promo codes, watching for specials, using Hotwire, etc.

And if anyone in your household qualifies for AARP (50+) you can usually get the same discount through that, and the membership is cheaper.

I dropped the family plan and went with one card- my brother was up in lake George and needed a jump and he just called AAA, gave them my number and they came right away, no questions asked. I use them for grams car, my car- any car I am in.

I just rejoined in California and it states that the owner of the card has to be with the vehicle at the time of service. You only get 4 services a year as well. I found that some places now you have to have the higher value AAA card to get the discounts.

It does state that but i have never once had any issue when i am not there.

You were lucky.

My vehicle broke down a mile from my house when my friend took it over to put gas in it for me. I called AAA and they came but I had to go to the vehicle to meet the service truck. They checked my card and then towed it for me. The free tow is only 3 or 4 miles on the minimum priced card. Each additional mile is (I think) $4. So I had to pay $12 to get it where I wanted it taken. $12 beats the minimum $150 a wrecker service wants around here.

I always have the minimum card - $60 here, and every year I save my money with it.

I also like it for booking some hotel nights. You get the cheapest rate usually with advance purchase. Advance purchase is usually nonrefundable. AAA rate is usually only $5 more and is always refundable - worth it for me.
