AAA Trip Tick Opinions?

Headed to DL in September with DP - WA to CA via I-5 and HWY 1 & 101. We have roadside assistance on our vehicle already, so I was considering AAA membership for a backup and the Trip Tik Travel Planner. I've done pretty good with mapquest in the past, but because we are taking the scenic route, we wanted to have a more personalized route without having to do too much legwork.
Does anyone use Trip Tik and if so, is it worth it?
Mapquest v. Trip Tik?

Any thoughts appreciated!

I LOVE triptik... It is soo detailed and well worth it! My DS's are going on a road trip to Oregon with my parents and I am planning on getting one for them to take with them. They are fascinated with maps and this will be easier for them to manage while driving.

You mentioned "getting one" for your DS's.... I'm confused. Do you mean a membership or a Trip Tik planner? Could you explain a little further? Is it a printable customized map or am I way off base?

Map quest never gets me to were I am going but trip tick always get me there to a tee. If you can do it get it, worth it to me and I sure it will be to you also

Trip Tik is pretty good - it gives you some reasonable details/maps on cities that you're going through - just make sure you put in stops at various places along the way even if you're not actually planning to stop overnight there - by making it a stop you'll get a little more information, though.

I find the guidebooks that come with the Trip Tik are very helpful, and talk about sights and attractions that I wouldn't otherwise know about.

Sorry to confuse you.... I will be ordering a trip tik planner for each of my boys. It is a customized map that is made according to your planned route. The last one we did was spiral bound and had fold out sections that expanded for more information. It will help them follow along better than the regular state maps that are available at the AAA front counter.

We will most likely be using our AAA triptik when we drive from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. We have used a AAA triptik in the past to get to Hershey Pk from NY and it worked out very well. Only used mapquest for shorter/local distances and that has worked out as well. But that's just me.

Just received my trip tick yesterday we are driving from Alberta down the Oregan coast to California this October. I haven't had a chance to really look at it, but dh said it was incredible.

Ours came spiral bound in a booklet (about the size of a map folded). When I first emailed CAA/AAA about this, I told them what general way we wanted to go, and if I had specific things I wanted to see. In my trip tick it showed a detail maps of our route (hilighted), with each map opening up to give more detail information. They also sent along any tour books and large maps with my trip tick. The online trip tick I also did, but was 87 pages (which i didn't print), and I would have had a heck of a time trying to keep it all together while we drove down the highway trying to figure out our way.

Last time I ordered one, it was spiral bound, but vertically, if that makes any sense. That way as you turned from page to page, you continued down/up/over the map, it was continuous looking. Very cool.

Are they still like that?

I'm not sure that a TripTik would be my ONLY reason to belong to AAA...I turn down insurance emergency service plans b/c I am happy with AAA's service, and the service is why I belong. But the TT, maps, guidebooks, cheap passport pictures, discounts, etc are nice bonuses.

I ordered and received my triptik. It will be a very convenient way to travel. I still enjoy the big maps, but it will be nice not to have to wrestle with them all the time!

I thought the same thing... that you could only print the maps/directions online, but you can actually order a booklet of your planned trip! I'm getting ready to finally order mine and I'm crossing my fingers and very excited!

I use TripTiks for our driving trips. I like the size and details. I just print them out at home.

However, I don't know if it would be worth joining AAA only for that benefit. I used Google Maps and Trip Tiks for our trip to Carlsbad, CA, last week, and both directions were the same.

Plus, if you are going I-5 to 101 & back to I-5 to get to Anaheim, it's pretty straightforward, unless you want to stop a lot along 101. I would think a regular map would do the trick, or Google Maps.
