So my sister in law was supposed to travel last year to the Turks and Caicos. Unfortunately the trip got cancelled because of the hurricane. She is now trying to use her AA credit to book a flight to Disney in September. AA is now giving her a hard time because the flight she wants to book is out of the range of the credit.

Has anyone had any luck using a AA credit? Can someone explain what the "range" is AA is talking about?

I can't help with anything about a range.
I have had a credit with AA that I used. It was $40 credits that came from a drop in airfare, so slightly different reason.
They mailed us the credits, looked like old fashioned paper plane tickets, one in each of our names.
I went to book a flight and couldn't figure out how to use the credit online so I called and found out they can't take them online. What I did was gave the booking agent on the phone the code from the voucher that was mailed to me.
Then he gave me 2 choices. I could mail the voucher back to them or take it to the airport and turn it in at the AA counter. Since we have a small airport with parking and ticket counters that are easy to access I just opted to run it by the AA counter at our airport. It didn't even cost me anything to park, it was so quick.
The credit was only a small portion of our total airfare but it was still no problem for me to use it.

I think usually the credit is valid for one year from original purchase of airfare, not trip date. That might be the problem she's running in to. I'm not 100% sure how AA travel policies are worded though.

According to the American Airlines website, (on this page)

I have a nonrefundable ticket; can I use it for future travel?

Depending on fare rules, you can apply the unused value of your American Airlines ticket toward a future trip as long as:

  • Your new trip begins no later than one year from the ticket's original issue date
  • You canceled the original ticket before the departure of the first flight (or the ticket loses any remaining value and cannot be used for future travel.)
