HAZLETON, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania woman has agreed to plead guilty after spending about 11 days in jail for failing to return three overdue library books.

A district judge in Luzerne County had ordered the woman to pay $125 in fines, plus court costs.

He's suspended her jail sentence on the condition she pays half the fine within 30 days and the other half within another 60 days.

He said that she went to jail because she failed to answer notices to appear in court. And she was unable to post bail.

The books were due in October 2000. The library filed a private criminal complaint more than six months after they were due.

Wow!!!

A few years ago, my local library sent a couple of debt collectors round to pick up a few books I hadn't quite got around to giving back. To say the least, my dad was not pleased

our authority employs debt collectors for us at the library too....never seen enyone imprisoned tho!!!

Hmm, sounds perfectly reasonable to me ;)

(yes, I know I work in a Library but I'm sure I'm being completely objective! )

Oh my!

Well, it IS pretty harsh for a library book, but on the other hand, the minute you start ignoring Court letters, you're just asking for trouble!
