We weren't planning on renting a car for our February trip but to go the beach for the day -- it seems Huntington Beach is recommended on these boards -- woudl we need one. There isn't by chance a shuttle is there?

I have never heard of a beach shuttle. I think you will have to rent a car.

Some non-West coasters do not understand how cold it is at the beach in SoCal in the non-summer months and how cold the water is. The beach in February is really just for seeing and maybe taking in a meal. Just wanted to be sure you knew that.

Yeah it can get a bit chilly at the beach, and maybe raining in Feb. Its great to just go to see and take pictures, but spending the day might not be a great choice. But if you are going to try to see it, I am sure you will have a great time with some nice pictures. Just wear your jackets!! hehe

Thanks Cardinals Fan. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Bye the way we're from the northern Canadian prairies. In Feb. it will probably be 50 below with 5 feet of snow here. We'll be on the beach.....

Lol -- It's people like you we see bathing in our beaches in February from the warm restaurant windows. I usually take pictures. ;)

:lmao: Further, I cannot imagine even the most northern of Canadians being able to tolerate the water temperatures in the winter which will be at hypothermic levels without a wetsuit. But if Mary Jo is able to get a picture of you enjoying yourselves I will be impressed - both with you and Mary Jo! I hope she will post it for us all to see. ::yes::

Lol - now wouldn't that be something!

We usually go to Tony's on the Pier (Redondo Beach). It'll be February & people are in the water! I usually take a picture. ;)

I'd recommend a beach with good pier but my #1 beach rec for Feb would be Balboa and that area. You get the beach thing, the little ferry, cutesy california houses and shops in a manageable area close to DLR.

Hello! May I jump in, too? We'll be at DLR in 2 weeks (!!!) and although we know it won't be that warm, it's still going to be way warmer than home (yup, it's been snowing today!). Our 9 year old twins have never seen an ocean and we just wnt show them the waves, etc.

So is this a silly question? Is there anywhere we can go to show our boys some surfers?

Thanks!

PS I do remember working for a Canadian beer company and taking calls from Americans calling the NY office to locate the beer. A lovely fella from way down south called to ask questions about skiing in Quebec, Canada in July...to which I politely replied that water skiing would be his only option! We neighbours need to get to know each other better!

Huntington Beach is near DLR and is considered one of the top surfing spots in California. Surfers go year round and wear wetsuits in the non-summer months.

I don't know about a picture -- that would not be pretty....

The ocean is February sounds reasonable. Haven't you heard about our Polar Bear swims on New Year's Day? Us Crazy Canadians!!!

hi there, we were at DL in september and we decided we wanted to do a beach trip...everyone gave us very different opinions about which beach we wanted to do, but i am so glad we took the advice of one of the girls at the HOJO...we went to newport and LOVED it...we drove basically straight down harbour all the way there (we rented a car for the day)...it took less than 40 minutes to get there...when we were there it was a sunny, beautiful warm day so the kids spent a lot of time in the water...even thought i am also from canada, i need warm weather to get wet...newport was awesome, there was a boardwalk with lots of little stores, the beach was awesome, and of course, what my 16 year old thought was great-the pier (seen in a lot of movies)....have fun in whatever you decide....
