I have way too many Disney pins, which I keep in one of those pin trader cases that are similar to a laptop case. Because some of my pins are rather valuable, I am always more comfortable carrying them on. But on our Thanksgiving trip, I knew I had to be prepared for the possibility of checking them. This is how I did it:
I put my pin case and a backpack containing all of the other items I wanted to carry on into a small rolling carry-on size bag. That way, if they had insisted on taking away my pins, I could have removed the backpack to take with me, and locked the pins in the small, sturdy bag. However, it turned out that I was allowed to keep them with me on both trips. At O'Hare, they got a little paranoid and thoroughly searched the pin bag, plus scanned it for bomb residue. Then they called a supervisor to make the final decision. It really didn't take all that long...maybe ten minutes total for the bag search and the supervisor consultation. At Orlando, they didn't even bother to look in the pin bag. I imagine that your experience will vary widely, depending on which airport you use.
