Can you put them in a place where fresh air will pull the smell away? Is he out during the day so you can air them out in the garage or on the porch?
That stink isn't just grocery stores, they reek the same way coming from many of the nicest flower shops so I wouldn't assume the smell means cheap. Funeral flowers are expensive and made in the same place as the priciest bouquets I send during the holidays. If it was me I wouldn't say something about it smelling like a funeral because that is biting and would come off as mean to someone trying to help because he may stop trying to help you and it is doubtful you want that.
You can say that as pretty as the flowers are the fragrance the place used is strong and bothering you, it is much softer - he can fill in the blank on how it is bothering you. Maybe try to direct him to other options for the next time, as in point things out. Trader Joes doesn't seem to use the fragrance in the smaller bouquets and some flowers like Sunflowers and hydrangea don't get sprayed so those are what I tend to stick to, I don't go to flower shops because they are always awful. Live potted plants from anywhere including Lowes don't get sprayed so those are nice too, a potted set of tulips is nice and no smell.
I have the same problem but because of migraines. On my wedding day I had to have the limo driver pull over and all the flowers go into the trunk because of the spray they use and I had requested no spray :/
