Since this DL trip is technically my birthday present (for every birthday until death I imagine) - I really want to do a birthday dinner at a great Mexican restaurant in the area.

I'm willing to drive a little to get something extra yummy. Fancy is not necessary - just tasty. :D

Any recommendations?

There's a place in Downtown Disney called Tortilla Jo's. I haven't eaten there, but found a review of it

And here's the official webpage

Tortilla Jo's

They have a dining room as well as a walk up counter. At the counter, I've heard rave reviews about the Mexicones. A crispy corn tortilla in a cone shape filled with rice, beans, and your choice of meat. I may just have to give these a try next weekend.

Don Jose's is soooo good. My family has been going there for as long as I can remember. There is one in Westminster (near Huntington Beach) and one in Anaheim Hills, both are about a 15-20 minute drive from DL. The one in Westminster is the one we usually go to. If you were going to have a beach day, I would suggest checking out Huntington Beach and going to Don Jose's! YUM! (If you want directions or anything, just let me know!) :teeth:

There's also a Don Jose's in Fullerton at Yorba Linda and Placentia.

My personal recommendation would be The Chili Pepper in Orange. Great authentic food. It's at Main and Chapman in Orange (on Main just south of Chapman).

Is it a Ricardo's Don Jose's? I drive through there everyday on my way home from work and I've never seen it! Where have I been? LOL Is it near the Target, or the Albertson's?

I think I've seen The Chili Pepper, we'll have to try it. DH2B and I LOVE mexican food! Do you know if they have good chimichangas there? Ooooh, or flautas? (Yum, if it's fried, then I'm in heaven! lol)

Have you ever tried El Taco (small fast food chain in Orange) Their quesadillas w/red sauce are to die for!!

(Sorry to the OP to hijack your thread  )

Don Jose's is just past the car wash while going south on Placentia. It is technically in the Target lot.

A place for good mexican food near DL is Los Sanchez. Its very delicious and pretty authentic. Its not fancy by any means though. And if you didn't know it was there you might just pass it by or skip it without being given the heads up about it first. I would have never thought to eat there but I used to work down the street from there and the girls in the office would order from there like once a week. Yeah, it was that good. Servings are rather large and its fairly cheap. Its located right on Harbor just past Chapman. Its in the next lot over from Joe's Crabshack right across from Target.

Don Jose's is ok too. I have eaten there as well and like it too. But its not authentic in my mind and more pricer than is should be. JMO Over my years of working near there we ate there quite a few times a month. Never had a bad meal there and I like the prices.

Good luck in your search.

What great suggestions everyone! My mouth is watering just thinking about them. :D
