A summer clothing question

So my husband is the King of Sunscreen. He's had some skin cancers removed and is understandably concerned about any length of time in the sun. His plan for WDW in August obviously includes massive amounts of sunscreen for us all but the next part I'm a little unsure of. He wants to buy long sleeved shirts to wear. The moisture-wicking, sun protection kind. Does anyone do this? I'm afraid he'll burn up in long sleeves in AUGUST! Has anyone had experience with this? And yes, he is planning on wearing shorts.;)

I wore shirts with a similar idea when I went to Egypt (and is was over 40 degrees celsius!). You may have some difficulty finding light weight long sleeve shirts but they definately helped me avoid burning to a crisp. Check out some of the travel clothing companies as well as sporting goods stores and you should be able to find something that will work. With the right material it won't make him any hotter.

I've been to WDW in the summer many times(a few of those times in August). I too wear a lot of sunscreen at home and on vacation...but more importantly I seek shade as much as possible. I find that there is a lot of shade in the parks at WDW. It seems to me that the majority of rides and attractions are either under cover or inside in a/c. I think it is way too hot to be wearing long sleeves in the summer at WDW. I also think it is way too hot to be out in the scorching sun. That being said-yes, there are times when it will be unavoidable to be in the sun. I would just put on the best sunscreen possible (reapply frequently) and seek shade as much as possible. Even at the pools at the hotels I have always been able to find a shady spot to sit.

Another thing-we would try to be in the park at night as much as possible to stay out of the heat of the sun. Night is a good time to do those rides that do not have shade (Dumbo ride comes to mind...) We avoid the peak sun hours in the park (we go early am and leave by 11:00-12:00ish)and go back to our resort, take a nap so we can stay up late in the parks.

There's only one person who is going to know if he's going to be hot and that ain't you - it's him. And he won't know that until he's there in August and gets to experience it himself.

What's the harm in letting him buy and take the shirts? It's going to make him feel better since he's concerned about the sun. And who cares what he's wearing the parks. Don't you think he's going to have a much better trip if he's not worried about too much time in the sun? Obviously, take short sleeve shirts as well in case he changes his mind. But if that's a problem, Disney World has a ton of T shirts to buy once you are there.

I'd definitely let my husband wear what was comfortable for him - not only physically but mentally.

Take a large umbrella. It's about the best thing you can do to keep yourself cool and in the shade. I'm using a skin med that makes me very sun sensitive, and I'll probably have to use an umbrella for my trip in May. When we were in Israel, a bunch of the tourist sites actually had umbrellas out for people to use while they were at the site - and pretty much everyone did use them!

Thanks but I was really looking for people who have worn these long sleeve CoolMax shirts and their experiences with how they work. I'm not concerned with how he looks, I'm concerned about him overheating because that will effect our trip.;)

I've worn the sun protective light weight clothing, both long sleeves and long pants and wide brim hat and was very comfortable in August- no sunburn, no sticking to seats from sweat, no greasy sunscreen except on back of hands and on face and exposed neck. It is becoming more common to see other people wearing sun protective clothing. The fabric is extremely lightweight and soft.

My favorite catalog is Sun Precautions but they are a little pricey, unless maybe you subtract the costs of all the sunscreen you don't need to buy!

Go to www.travelsmith.com. It's a travel clothing/accessory web site, and has exactly the type of shirt your husband is looking for. They have long-sleeved, moisture-wicking shirts for both men and women that are specifically made for sun protection, and they even "rate" the SPF factor of the shirts. It's a great web site!

I contracted PLE (polymorphous light eruption) at WDW and had to wear sun-protective clothing on an August trip the next year. I wore sun-protective long sleeve shirts, long pants, gloves and a wide-brim hat. What worked best for me was a tank top with a long sleeve button shirt over it that had back and underarm vents. We alternated hot line attractions with air-conditioned attractions so I could cool down in between. It's not the most comfortable wear in summer, but it is doable.
I like coolibar.com for UPF/SPF clothing - well made and more reasonable in price. I also have luck searching for UPF clothing at sierratradingpost.com.

I don't know anything about these shirts, but I do want to suggest that you get to the parks early and take a break during the afternoon. You'll avoid the hottest (and sunniest) part of the day, and then you can come back once the sun and heat start to go down. :thumbsup2

I put my ds9 in short sleeved ones. They protect him from the sun and when they get wet (which they will in August) they dry quickly.

I haven't seen a lot of long sleeved, but I've seen quite a bit of Asians with umbrellas.

If your dh gets hot, just throw him in one of the kiddy sprinklers in the park.

I bet you'll be jealous of his shirt.

I've gotten hats from coolibar.com. They have lots of sun-protective clothing, I get their emails and they often have coupon codes. I'm sure he'll be fine wearing a l/s shirt like that.

My Mother always wears light weight long sleeved shirts while visiting the parks. She has never complained about being hot, and it has never stopped her from doing anything we are doing.

Land's End sells cotton t-shirts with sun protection.

My dad always wore them when fishing in the Gulf in summer; he had had a few run-ins with skin cancer. He also aways wore either a wide-brimmed hat or a foreign-legion-type ball cap with a neck shield.

Buy the sort of shirts that are meant for fishing; Columbia makes some good ones that are affordable. They have vents all over them that allow air to circulate. Buy a bit large, again for air circulation, and stick to the palest colors you can find.
