A skeptical family of First-Timers take on WDW Nov 15-22** NOV 28 update

Oh duh, I wasn't even thinking at all. I was thinking that the elec. parade was at 9:00 on the 17th, not 7:00. So, no, we would not make it at all with the Luau show happening no matter what time we did that. I'll just stick with the original plan on seeing the elec parade on Sat. the 19th then. I sort of think that parades are always packed no matter what day so I guess we'll feel packed in regardless:laughing:
So, how are we all not at the same places on same days I wonder? I sort of based my plan on Tour Guide Mike more or less. I hope I'm not doing anything totally dumb since you and Joy13 are much more experienced than me and you're doing totally different days for things. Yikes.

Well, I can't say I've ever read Tour Guide Mike. I do use the Unofficial Guide to a degree - but since I don't subscribe to him it hardly matters.

The truth (that Unofficial Guide WILL actually tell you) is what day you go to the park is less important than how you actually tour the park. Using rope drop and fastpasses and understanding which rides to wait until later in the day to ride are way more important than what day you pick. (Example: While we hit most of Fantasyland first thing in the morning, we skip Philharmagic until later in the day.) We also try to pick uncrowded weeks to go - which make a big difference as well.

A couple things we do:

1) we avoid EMH parks completely. Not that there's anything wrong with doing EMH, but unless your going to actually be there FOR the EMH - then these parks should be avoided. We don't find that getting up so early is worth the extra hour of park time, and generally the evening hours are too late for DD.

2) We try to hit MK on party days, if a party is going on. Our experience is the park is pretty empty until about 3 PM on party days. Also try to avoid MK on Sundays and Mondays if we can.

3) We avoid EPCOT on Fridays and Saturdays, particularly late in the day. This is when the locals come out.

4) We avoid hopping as much as possible for two reason - one is the time that it wastes with transporting between parks but more important is (2) to take advantage of using Fastpasses late. It's an unwritten rule that you can use your FP anytime after the window. So we spend the morning gathering FP - and then in the afternoon / evening we use the FP when the lines are the longest, this is especially valid with MK and DHS. (The other two parks we don't get a lot of FP.) I once had 8 sets of FP in my pocket at MK waiting for the crowds to arrive. In fact, often we have too many, and end up giving some away. (If you see me Saturday night the 19th - you might get some!)

There's no way to plan a schedule that avoids all the things that they tell you to avoid. (Like us showing up at MK on the 19th.) But again, smart touring is really the key to managing the crowds.

Looking it over - I think your plan is just fine - really! Doing mostly Epcot the weekend the start of Thanksgiving is a smart move. (I know I said Epcot on Saturday is bad - but mostly that's late in the day when your swinging over to MK. - Saturday evening is not good anywhere.) The only thing is- I would never be able to handle spending my LAST day there and not go to the parks at all.

My days are limited on order because we have such a short trip and we are doing the Christmas Party. We are not park hopping either on this trip since it is so short. I did sort of use Unofficial Guides best park days, but mostly because it worked best anyway. Your plan sounds great to me :thumbsup2

Ah...but Joy do OUR trips overlap at all? ;) We don't know where we'll be on Sunday (other than @ 3 PM on a DME bus :( ), so maybe i'll see you both on Sunday.

You can't tell me on a Sunday from my football colors. I own zero Buffalo Bills paraphenalia. I might have on Sabres (hockey) gear during the trip though, probably a hat. While you football people miss 1 or 2 games during your trip - I am missing SIX games in the 11 days of my trip. (Based on length of a season 5 NHL games = 1 NFL game) And try watching a Sabres vs Ottawa Senators broadcast in Florida! (Hint: You can't.) Fortunately, I now have an APP for just that purpose!

Oops - hijacking someone else's thread again. Back to work - Pete!

Not to increase the hijack - but my schedule of days:

11/16 (Wed) - hopefully the evening in MK - head to Comtemporary observation deck for Wishes and then Chef Mickey's for dinner

11/17 (Thurs) - DHS

11/18 (Fri) - MK and MVMCP

11/19 (Sat) AK

11/20 (Sun) Epcot

11/21 (Mon) Home :(

The only thing is- I would never be able to handle spending my LAST day there and not go to the parks at all.

Oh, we'll end up at a park on that last day I'm sure. I didn't specify a "particular" park on our last day because I'm just not sure where we'll end up, but I'm sure we'll go to at least one park for a couple hours. Sort of a free day and I imagine we'll hop around and do whatever we need to do one more time. All we HAVE to do that last day is get to the Hoop on time and I really want to look at one or two other resorts to try to get hubster interested in maybe coming back another time and checking one of them out. I'm particularly interested in Port Orleans.

anyhoo.....doing some resort hopping and getting to the Hoop that night wont take that much time so we'll just have to see what park we end up in:goodvibes

Oh...and thanks for all the advice and tips!!!

ooooh, I love that idea! Is it going to be in a little notebook? with photos or just journaling? tell me more:goodvibes

I may even re-adjust my photo itinerary and do maybe an 8x8 little album with each day being one page. This wouldn't be the "real" scrapbook but more of a mini pre-scrapbook for each kid to take along and see what's in store for each day. I would add more photos and more details since I'd have a page set aside for each day.

I am not sure what size it is going to be...probably 8 1/2 x 11. I have a page each day with a title for where we will be, then anything special we are going that day (meal ADRs, events, etc), a basic touring plan, and then pictures that go with each day, the back is going to be a place they can journal in each night and any extra pictures that did not fit on the front (a lot like yours)...probably the boys won't but Ab will...she is my writer! I am also going to put in a few pocket pages to put maps in that they can look at at the plane ride down (a couple of people on the DIS have helped me collect maps and brochures of different places), plus they can put in anything they collect from the day of touring. I have a binding comb machine at school that I am going to use. The pages I am going to print on cardstock. I will post a picture of a page when I get one done so you can see.

I plan to have this journal, trip shirt, and balloon (Boo is getting Harry Potter balloon, Ab a dolphin, and Jo a Mickey Balloon) in the grand reveal package for each of the kids to open Christmas Day. Along with another gift...their travel bags full of other things for the flight. That way nothing will look different Christmas morning, they are used to 4 packages under the tree each (1 was opened Christmas eve...pj's).

well......we may actually have 2 days that we can potentially run into each other since I've tweaked my schedule a little.
Thur the 17th I decided to do HS instead of AK since there is no Fantasmic that night which may make the crowds smaller:woohoo: And then the 20th we are doing Epcot also so you just never know...

Oh man, you are my idol. You do the coolest craftiest stuff for your kids! I can't wait for the big reveal and also all the photos you post of it!

Hmmm...nope, no real overlap unless we end up in Epcot on Sunday. I was considering doing MK on the 18th and AK on the 19th like you early in planning, as it would probably be better for crowds - but decided I wanted to have one FULL MK day available. (Our other two are partial.)

Oh, we'll end up at a park on that last day I'm sure. Ah, that makes more sense. Our last day is also a "wing it" day - though we will only have until around 2PM in whatever park we choose. Last time we did that, but pretty much knew we were going to Epcot that day. This year, I really don't know, and I don't think we will decide until maybe the day before.

Hello everybody:wave2:

We have 54 days to go:woohoo: and I had a little time today for an update.

First of all....I did a little flip floppin' of my itinerary. Not a big change at all but just switched my AK day and my HS day. I got to looking at a couple planning sites last night (like Easy WDW) and most seemed to recommend doing HS on Nov 17th since it's one of only 2 nights in all of Nov. that DOESN'T have a Fantasmic showing. Since we are doing Fantasmic on a completely separate night than the day we actually "do" HS, I figured we should do our actual day of HS on what may be the lowest crowd day. So we are now doing HS on the 17th and AK on the 18th. Of course that meant I had to jack with ADRs also but it went pretty smoothly. Still got Yak and Yeti and Sci Fi at the times I wanted just basically had to flip flop those to opposite days too.
I hope I did the right thing? I'm guessing there is a private party or something at Studios on the 17th which is why there is no Fantasmic that night.
So now to recap:
Nov 15th: arrive noonish, relax at resort, Christmas Party
Nov 16th: Kona breakfast, back to MK for day, Fantasmic that night
Nov 17th: HS all day, Sci fi lunch, Luau at resort at 8:00
Nov 18th: AK all day with lunch at Yak,
Nov 19th: Epcot, future world portion mainly, Elec parade and wishes @night
Nov 20th GF cafe brunch, WS portion of Epcot, Rose/Crown for Illuminations
Nov 21st Hop around to wherever, Downtown?, other resorts? Hoop at 6 ish!

In other news, I'm being a little stubborn and weird about sending final payment to Disney which is due on Oct 1. All I've sent them so far is the initial deposit. We set aside another little savings acct. that was solely for our Disney savings so we do have all the money and I'm not worried about that. It's just that I haven't quite got in the mood to actually give it to Disney yet:laughing:! I think part of the problem is that I got the bounceback offer for 5 of our 7 nights and I was sort of holding out hope that maybe, just maybe a room-only offer would appear that would include my 2 straggler dates that are at rack rate. But.....no, doesn't appear that any room-only discounts are coming out. I have until Oct 1 to pay this baby in full so I'll probably just hold out until then and maybe Disney will freak out that we haven't paid in full and put out a room-only offer.:lmao:

And then another little tid bit of info for everybody.....WE may be getting my perfectly planned vacation hi-jacked by some friends! yikes:eek: Now, these friends are wonderful and I love them dearly but I'm just not good doing trips with other people. You see, I'm a people-pleaser type and will find myself doing what "they" want versus what I've planned on doing for over a year now!
I've hid that we were going on this trip from my friend as long as I could but I knew I couldn't hide it forever. So, when I got to the point of needing to tell her...she got all excited and they booked one now too! BUT.....they are coming from a different state and driving and we are flying. They are NOT staying on property, we are. They are not going to be there the "exact" same dates but at least 3-5 days will overlap. They have not planned ONE thing and are CLUELESS. No ADRs, no plans, nada. This will actually work to my benefit versus having two Alpha-OCD-Planners trying to be boss:laughing: So, I WILL not change any ADRs or any plans and they are welcome to follow along and try to get ADRs also and I will share my itinerary with them but I just refuse to change anything no matter how people-pleasy I am. I talked to my friend last night and I feel a little better today because she said they aren't into planning anything and are clueless so they may just follow us around using my well-thought out plans. I'm sort of ok with that. They have kids my kids' age and we all get along. As long as I don't let myself get talked into switching anything we should be fine. I also think it's good that we are staying at Poly and they are somewhere off site so we at least know there is an end to the day with them and we wont be having sleep-overs!

Good For you you keep your plans! you have been trying to go to Disney for how long! try and get your Family into Disney before anyone shows up!!! LOL
we also will be in HS on the 17th.

Oh NO! My eyes literally widened with horror when I read about your friends tagging along. Even the best of friends can have totally different travelling styles, and I would HATE if any of your plans were changed. Stick to your guns, and vacation for your family alone. Maybe you can all meet up for meals? Oh this sucks!

Can you tell that I'm really upset for you? :rotfl:

Well, I agree with PP that generally having friends tag along are not good BUT tag-along friends can be OK as long as you set the rules:

"Here is what we are doing each day, we have it all planned out. If you want to come along and join us, great. If you want to do something different, great." Then, on the trip itself, be firm. If you say your doing something, and they give you puppy-dog eyes and want to do something else, just say "that's fine, we'll catch up with you later".

The cluelessness might work well in your favor. When we brought our pretty-clueless friends back in 2008 they promised that they would "be like sheep" and follow our lead. We had a joke that when I would say "here's what we'll do next" they would say "Baaaa!" :goodvibes Just make sure your DH is going to support YOU over them...it will do little good if he's saying "Oh Honey, why don't we just go along with them!"

Good luck!

Yay for going to HS on the 17th! I really hope it's a good choice. I THINK the crowds will wait for a F! night to go.
Anyhoo....you are right, I want to have at least our first night with the Christmas party plan all to ourselves and I'm sure we will. If the friends are there first, I'm not going to worry because I am positive they are not going to buy tix to the party. As a matter of fact I'm sure they have never heard of it at all.

haha, thanks for being horrified with me:laughing: Actually, as horrifying as it sounds, I really am not THAT worried. Of all the people we know, this family is the least annoying of possible trip-hijackers:laughing: I really truly and honestly did everything I could to not tell them about us going but when the pressure was on to either fly up to visit them soon or them to come down here soon, I had no choice but to explain why we couldn't afford it this year. It was a couple weeks later when I got the text "Hey, we're going to Disney too!" (this did happen a few weeks ago though I didn't put it in my trip report 'til now because they still seemed so much up in the air) anyhoo....my friend called me last night so it was really the first time we really talked about it. She has done the opposite of me and hasn't planned a thing. She doesn't even know their dates for sure!!!! I guess her husband found a condo and did the arrangements and he wasn't home last night so she couldn't tell me the dates. She told me what she THINKS the dates are and from what I could tell, we'll maybe only have 3 overlapping days. whew! the key to making this work will be all up to me. I need to be strong and not cave in to anything and I am very determined to do just that. This disney trip is my baby that I have nurtured, plotted, schemed, and OCD planned for over a year now.

haha. Love the "baaaa" thing. That's right, they better be little sheep!
I do agree that the cluelessness will work in my favor and even last night, my friend still didn't know "exactly" when they were even going! She thought maybe Sat-Sat before thanksgiving. We are doing Tues-tues before Thanksgiving. As long as we have a couple days all on our own, I'll be fine. And I'm also very happy that we are on property and they aren't because we can sneak off to EMHs and so forth and so on. I think it will be ok, a little monkey wrench but what can you do? Disney is a public place and I tried to hide it from them as long as possible. They'll just have to be my little sheep and I'll be the shepherd!

She thought maybe Sat-Sat before thanksgiving.

Saturday to Saturday! Oh no! They'll hijack OUR trip instead!:rotfl:
Maybe if we stand really still, they won't notice us.

One thing you could do if you want to be nice - since your flying and they are driving (and this is assuming you don't have a car) you could get a resort parking pass for them. I am not sure that they could use it to park in the theme park parking lots (I think you also need to show your KTTW card for that), but they could use it to park at the Poly for going to Magic Kingdom and even Epcot. You'd only need the make and model and license of their car. Would save them $14 a day and cost you nothing.

oh and YES this is very important and I need to remember to have a chit chat w/ David about how it's all going to go down BEFORE we get there! Generally I am the social one in the family and he'd much much much prefer not to ever have any friends:rotfl:so it shouldn't be a problem for him to take my side if something should come up. If anything, him and I could get into a little spat because he'll see that I might be changing something and sort of trying to make the friend happy and he'll get all over me for being a push-over. So, in this case, I need him to stay on me. My plans are exactly what I want and I'll tell him ahead of time to be supportive and not a jerk but "gently" slap me if he sees me start to get all wishy washy with my plans in order to keep the friends happy.

Problem solved!!!I'll introduce them to you guys and ya'll can tour guide them around. AFter all, you are experience park-goers and that will be better for them than with us newbies:lmao:

no we are not getting a car and I see your point but......let me think.....NO! I wont be mean but I'm not gonna do anything to help them get closer to us:lmao: If they park at the Poly than before you know it, they'll be wanting to come up and have drinks with us, pool hop, God knows what. I'm just going to let them be confused and work at the parking. I swear I'm not going to be mean, just not over-accomodating:rolleyes1

Ha, I'll have them running screaming for the hills before you even get there! I can see your friends now: "That family is nuts! Did you know they insist on taking pictures of all their food! And they know the words to all the ride songs. They're freaking us out.":woohoo:

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind - making it a little toooo easy to horn in on your vacation. I don't blame you. See...if someone did that to me, I would just show them my 20 page spreadsheet to explain where we intend to be of every minute of every day and THAT would scare them off.:scared1:

(No - I don't actually do that....anymore. :thumbsup2)

Friends tagging along - a bit scary! Sounds like you've got it under control though!

yay for having 2 days that overlap! I hope they don't add Fantasmic that night!

:scared1:Friends tagging along does not sound like fun...especially the kind who has no idea that they need to obsess over every detail about the vacation in WDW! You have your plan, they either follow or not. Stick to your guns...yep I sound like an authority I would probably be working on right now changing our ADRs for them. Good luck!

I'm really loving your trip report! I read the whole thing this morning :goodvibes

That is a genius idea about the family movie nights with the theme dinners! We may have to start that.

Hope your hubby has safe travels coming up!

Thanks and :welcome:

Oh and the family dinner/movie nights are nothing compared to Momabaarjo's! You need to check out her report, they do fabulous themed meals! I got the idea from her though my dinner/movie nights don't even compare. It's just that my kids are in the teen years (well one is for sure) and convincing them to sit down and watch a Disney movie isn't easy:laughing: I've caught my daughter texting through most of them, my husband sleep through them....My son and I are the only ones that "really" watch the movies:laughing:

How exciting! Your quick trip with your friend sure sounded busy and fun. You and your family are gonna have a blast when you return *and how fun - their 1st visit!!

We did the Illuminations dinner @ Rose & Crown - we loved it, DD was chosed to "start" Illuminations. Plus there's cute British boys there - I married one myself *not an Epcot employee :rotfl2: Be sure to request that you sit outside *with a good view for the show - you'll do that when you check in for your ADR.
