A signature dinner a day keeps the doctor away Dlxddp August 2010: upd FFish 10/10

Great choice switching that dinner to Flying Fish! Looking forward to more of your reviews!

I totally remember your review of the snapper last year! We'll have a tough choice between the snapper and the grouper in a few weeks, they both sound delish! :thumbsup2 Looking forward to the rest of the reviews! popcorn::

I know what you mean!...for me I think the pan seared snapper (ie. as modified without shellfish oil) wins the day, simply becuase I absolutely adore Thai food, and it's not easy to come by in Orlando..

Oh my gosh! Such great photos and the food looks amazing. I'm so on board for this one!!

thank you and welcome..when I have more time I'll follow yours along too!

great photos - definitely subscribing. Never thought about Raglan Road but those photos are twisting my arm for sure.

It's a 2 out of 2 for us...we would pay to go here if not on the plan...good food, good atmosphere, not over-priced, so thumbs up from us.

Ha ha, someone else pulled a Todd and "wasnt feeling it"!

Such a smart choice dropping YM for FF...the food is a million times better!

LOL Nicki, didn't mean to plagarise you! I'm just so pleased we went with our hearts and were both happy to change. We even kept our second reservation at FF later that week as we enjoyed it so much!

Thanks for the reviews! My dad is really excited to try Narcoosees on his upcoming March trip, and is so enthusiastic about it that he even asked me to book it again the following week for my mom and his anniversary dinner (even though he hadn't tried it yet)! I was a bit nervous, having read some iffy reviews, but this makes me feel much better about it. My parents love fish. Will they do personalized menus? I'm going to note the anniversary on the ADR but won't tell my parents I'm doing so.

P.S. My dad is British also! But his family moved here when he was 5 or so. ;)

Yes they do personalised menus if you note anniversaries and such. You get to bring the menu home too. Such a nice touch.

This may sound crazy but I am so thrilled to learn you can get the snapper without the veal glace and that you enjoyed it! :thumbsup2

Loving your reviews so far. Can't wait for more! popcorn::

Not crazy at all, Christine! When I read all the reviews I wondered whether I could sub the veal glace, but noone had done it. But I figured it could be done...it's Disney after all! Anyhow, both my DH and myself have it confirmed for you...and red wine sauce tasted lovely anyhow!

These look great. We have some same places on our trip in January.

thanks for joining in and welcome.

Amazing report! Subscribing. We are doing a very similar "girls trip" in a couple of weeks, no kids. Love the signature dining, otherwise it would be just too much food for us. Amazing options for the kids - I can't believe the desserts ... you have me thinking once they are just a bit older:o) Keep it up - thanks!

thanks and welcome. I really wanted to show the kids options at the places we went and the signatures too, as there are not many reports on this. I'd happily have eaten the kids flounder meal at Chefs...huge portion! and $8! bargain!

These two pics helped me decide to change my plan to Raglan Rd one day... I love some salmon and havent seen any places that offer smoked salmon. Now I'm even more excited!!!:woohoo:

welcome! we love smoked salmon, and this was particularly good. we choose the breakfast buffets acc to whether they have smoked salmon or eggs to order too.

Great choice switching that dinner to Flying Fish! Looking forward to more of your reviews!

I know...so pleased we did! welcome along.

Next up is Chefs de France and Grand Floridian Cafe.

Chefs de France

So for those of you following along on the journey so far, the Chefs ADR was the day of the fire alarm at the YC...read above for the detail on that:omg:.

I mention it here simply because I had chosen to go to Epcot on a non EMH morning so that we’d get the benefit of an extra hour in bed instead;)..not to be, we were rudely awoken at 6.45am:blush: so sauntered across to Epcot via the International Gateway for rope drop at 9am.

We had a first set of fastpasses for Soarin’ by 9.04am and at 9.05am were on the first Living with the land of the day.

After a morning in Future World, we arrived a little early for our ADR at Chefs, and were seated in the atrium to the right hand side.

We had a bit of difficulty explaining how we wanted to use the DDP credits here, but eventually got the message through in my rusty French from years gone by.

A visit from Remy came quickly, along with 2 French baguette sticks, some unsalted butter, and a selection of appetisers: 2 cheese plates and a walnut and blue cheese green salad, minus the bacon.

Both DH and I opted for the mahi sandwich without the accompaniments, served instead on a brioche roll. I have to be honest and say that had we not been on the dining plan, I'd have happily skipped the entree and stuck with the cheese plate and salad, but we had credits to use:tounge:.

Both DDs again went with the flounder from the kids menu, served with fries and beans instead of tomatoes: note that the “adult” portion for DD1 is the exact same size as the kids’ portion, so we should probably have paid out of pocket for both.

DH went with his apple pancake with caramel sauce again, and as the rest of us weren’t hungry he also ordered a crème brulee “just to taste”:tounge:. The crepe was as good as last time, and the top of the brulee was nice and crunchy: good, but not outstanding was the verdict.

The service here was impeccable and we did not feel rushed at all: it felt pretty much as you would at a leisurely lunch in France.

The food here is solid and reliable and we and the children enjoy it here...it’s probably the kids’ favourite meal on property, and when they are happy to eat grilled fish and beans, who am I to argue:spin:?! So, Chefs will remain firmly on the agenda for lunch when we’re in Epcot, we had a very relaxed and enjoyable time here again. On the DDP it's a 1TS, and for us, that's good value.

Grand Floridian Cafe

We had spent the morning at MK with our friends, and left just at the end of the parade and caught the monorail over to the GF, and walked down to the GFC.

Chef Scott came out to chat once again, and we were soon enjoying a ceasar salad and strawberry salad again.

The fish of the day today was striped bass, served over a wild mushroom ravioli, in a very light cream sauce that tasted divine and might well have been the same as last year’s fish of the day, the tilapia.
Words cannot express how divine this dish was...I love wild mushrooms, love pasta (would have been quite happy just to have a huge bowl of those raviolis in that sauce too if I was a true vegetarian!) and loved the striped bass (similar to halibut...yum!). I know that’s not a very foodie description, but honestly, I could eat that dish every day and die happy!

DD1 also had the striped bass, served plain with sauce on the side, (you can guess where that ended up!) and substituted red skin mashed potatoes instead of the ravioli.

DD2 went with the kids fish which that day was grilled salmon, and chose to have French fries to accompany it.

For dessert we had the sampler platter to share and DD1 ordered the chocolate hazelnut mousse cake.

Loved, loved, loved it. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

This remains our absolute favourite 1TS restaurant...it is so light and airy in there and so relaxing and calm...add to that delicious food, great service and reasonable prices...can you tell how much we like it? For us, this is the real hidden gem of WDW.

Wonderful reviews! :goodvibes So happy to see Flying Fish and Chefs, since these are two restaurants we haven't tried yet and have ADRs for.

Everything looks sooooo good! I'm positively drooling.

Great review on GFC. We're trying this for the first time in November (I need to get a pre-trip going). We've heard it is quite the hidden gem. We didn't love Narcoossee's and DF was a bit turned off by the Grand Floridian's stuffiness, but I told him I heard great things and we should try it :) Yay! Great job so far!

hello everyone, thanks for joining in!

50's Prime Time Diner

So today’s adventure is to 50’s Prime Time cafe.

We went there last October and had an enjoyable time, and for us it’s the obvious lunch choice when we’re at DHS as we don’t care for the CS options there for lunch or dinner.

So we checked in for our 12.10pm ADR and quickly ordered 3 chocolate malts and a diet coke. The malts are huge, probably 2 glasses worth, and really delicious, thick and creamy.

We ordered a portion of onion rings to share,

and both DH and I had the Caesar salad with salmon, and the girls shared a plain fish sandwich: this was all tasty and good, and hit the spot perfectly.

For dessert, DH ordered a vanilla sundae with caramel sauce and the girls and I all shared a hot fudge sundae.

A little bit about the antics here...our server bantered with us just a little and was especially funny when asking DH if he’d washed his hands when coming back from the restrooms. DH answered “yes”. He then said “what colour was the soap?” DH answered. He then asked whether the soap was liquid or solid...by this time the girls were laughing hysterically!

I got off relatively lightly...I was asked to set the table as I had my arms on the table...all light hearted..a quick, enjoyable lunch...not a “must do” but good fun.

thank you so much for such great photos and reviews........I am thinking of what to have for supper right now so your photos just increased the THINKING.
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this

Grand Floridian Cafe is now on my to do list.

you are very welcome:thumbsup2

Captain’s grille

So today we were supposed to go to Wolfgang Puck Cafe for for lunch but we were having so much fun with our friends at the pool at Stormalong Bay that we decided to tweak again and instead go to the YC’s Captain’s grille for lunch.

We checked in around 1.30pm and the restaurant was lovely and quiet, just a few families and couples and singles enjoying their lunch, just perfect.

We had a really lovely server here who was very friendly and chatty and brought out signed photos of Mickey for the girls and celebration balloons.

To start, DH had a Caesar salad

And a cocktail too...

I chose to skip the appetiser and went with the tuna sandwich for my entree, substituting ciabatta for the croissant and a portion of fries as the side:

DH and DD1 had the adult’s fish and chips

The chef here was also really accommodating: DD2 did not care for any of the options on the kids menu here...from memory there wasn't a veggie option here anyway, or if there was it was a PB&J sandwich which isn’t suitable for a child with a peanut allergy anyway!...so agreed to make a child’s portion of the fish and chips for her.

For dessert, we all shared 3 desserts, and DD2 had the sundae:
Key lime tart, chocolate cheesecake, and a chocolate mousse/profiterole thing. My, they were all so very good, the key lime being my favourite.

This is another hidden gem in our opinion...not quite as good as Grand Floridian cafe, but very nearly so.

oooh! captain's grille is my 2nd fave next to yachtsman!!! it is quite the hidden gem. we had the crab legs and pork chop and they were amazing!!! going back this time for more, and we're booking that for our rehearsal dinner at our wedding!!

I LOVE your reviews... particularly the ones of the Flying Fish and the Grand Floridian Cafe. Both are places I hope to go on my next trip, so I'm happy to hear your good opinions!

Just finished reading the reviews so far, and I'm signing up for more! We'll be eating at RR and Chefs in December, so I'm glad to see any food pics from those restaurants. In fact, I'm getting hungry now!

Fantastic reviews, lovely to read. Thanks so much for posting them! I'm thinking we'll definitely need to try the GF Cafe on our next trip.

Great reviews and great pictures :goodvibes

I too eat fish but not meat so your food choices are really interesting to me

Can't wait to read more popcorn::

hello everyone, thanks for your lovely comments:thumbsup2

California Grill

Unlike last year, DH was in a much better frame of mind for this meal as all our room keys were present and correct! (for those of you who remember last year DH had lost the KTTW card and was in a blind panic most of the evening thinking someone was buying up Rolex watches on us!!!).

We got the MK bus from the YC and walked over to the Contemporary, arriving on time for our ADR.

Unlike last year, there was hardly any wait at all and the buzzer went off almost straight away.

We were seated at a table on the front with views over the castle and the lake, and our server was Mark. Had a quick mini Dibb meet with Debs2028 and her boys who were a few tables behind and we also got talking to a lovely elderly couple from NJ on the table behind who were staying at Shades of Green.

I ordered a twisted Mai Tai, and DH had a Pina Colada.

This was full, sorry:blush:

For our appetiser we both went with the Sonoma goats cheese ravioli. This is such a nice appetiser, and so different from the majority of vegetarian appetisers on offer. We really enjoyed it.

And for our entree we both had the halibut in a delicious hijaki broth with sticky rice. So good, really really tasty and moreish.

The girls both had the fruit plate for their appetiser:

DD1 had the halibut served plain with rice and mushrooms, whilst DD2 went for the children’s salmon and rice and green beans.

For dessert I tried the famous Valhona chocolate cake with cherry ice cream, this was tasty but very rich and I barely made a dent in it.

DH went for the peach streusel with peach ice cream and he really enjoyed it.

The restaurant was nowhere near as loud and noisy as the previous October, and we had a really special meal here. This has now eclipsed Narcoossees as DH’s favourite restaurant on property and he will not hear of dropping it on our next visit to try out anywhere new!!!

Great review of CG :thumbsup2

I loved your choices, the halibut looked wonderful

Great pictures too :goodvibes

Our first ADR is at the California Grill and I've been dreaming of that ravioli for some time...looks delicious. The fact that your husband loved CG so much may help convince my DH about the whole experience....he is a little skeptical and I've been trying to find things on Disboards to help ease his mind. He's actually a big seafood fan so I'll have to show him your pics!
