A short review of 6 nights of Disney Dining with kids (and not all character meals)

Just to give you a little overview--For the first 3 nights we had 5 of us; DH, myself, my mom, DD4 and DS2.5, for the last 3 nights we had 6 because my dad joined up.

I booked my ADRs this time to try some new places. We all enjoy food and my kids are used to going out to eat but we also knew we needed to have places that would keep everyone happy.

First night we ate at Garden Grill for the first time. I was slightly worried about this because of reviews of really late seating past ADR time and slow service. We were seated within 15 minutes of our time and service was great. We asked for more steak and had no problems getting it fast. We all really enjoyed this. The characters were a lot of fun and even though we were on the 2nd floor, we enjoyed watching the ride go by.

2nd night--Hoop De Doo Review. I wanted a show and something different. This one was not dependent on the weather so we went with it. It was fun and DD had a great time. The food was pretty good but not great. We are glad we did it but this is something we will probably not do again for a long time. It was kind of a 1 time experience.

Day 3 Breakfast--Crystal Palace (8:20am before MK opened). The puffed French Toast was amazing (I am still dreaming of it). This meal was so good. We loved being in the park so early and the meal was tasty. We also enjoyed the characters a lot.

3rd night--Ohana!! I was able to get a 6:30pm ADR. We were sat right away. The food came quickly and we never had to wait. The meats were not over cooked at all and actually things were much better than the Brazilian steakhouse by our house. I love the dessert. Just like everyone said, it was amazing. My one complaint was the "games" for the kids went on FOREVER. It was almost 30 minutes from start to finish. If DD was older and wanted to really participate I would have been annoyed since she would have missed almost the entire time we were eating. I just found it odd. It was slow moving and most of the kids were getting bored waiting for what was next and what they were supposed to do, even the older ones.

Lunch on Day 4--Captain's Grille at YC. This was kind of a spur of the moment add on. My dad had joined us and was really hungry and wanted good food. We had moved resorts that AM and had the Deluxe Dining plan for this part of the trip so we had no problems. They got us right in without an ADR. The place was pretty empty but it took a long time to get through the meal. We all enjoyed the food but 90 minutes for lunch was a bit much for middle of the day with kids.

4th night--Cape May Clam. This was a repeat from last year but we did it on a Saturday so we could try the fried shrimp. The crab was harder to get out of the shell this time but we still really enjoyed the meal!

5th night--Flying Fish for our Special Father's Day dinner. The food was great! The kids did really well but our server did not seem at all pleased that he was waiting on a table with younger kids. He was super nice to the table next to us with teens at the table and the waitress for the other table with kids was AMAZING to them. He just seemed bothered that he was assigned to our table. He only brought milk for one, gave me a HUGE sigh when I asked for more fruit for DS and just generally was not thrilled we were his table (he was so much more interactive and helpful with his other 2 tables). We did love the food though!

Day 6 Lunch--Le Cellier. I almost cancelled this since it was at 1pm (just before nap time for the kids) and recent reviews have said it was not as good as it once was. We kept it and I am was beyond happy. Our server was so nice and wonderful. She was a complete doll. Lunch was so good. We all had the steak/risotto. I was thrilled with this meal

6th night dinner--Akershus. This was a request of DD. We had done this last year and even DH liked it. Well, we were so full from lunch but again we enjoyed this meal a lot. The Princesses were great. Aurora and Snow White were so in character and made the kids feel so special. Belle was so patient getting a good picture with both kids. We love this. I know at some point DD will want to eat in the castle but this has been such a great dinner for us I cannot imagine paying more for the "real" castle.

Final Morning Breakfast--Cape May Breakfast. Characters here were SO fun and entertaining. The food was OK but not great. We liked Crystal Palace a lot more. If we are staying at BCV or BWV we would probably do this again but only because it would be close, we would not go out of our way for this meal

We did not have a bad meal. We had some that were above what we expected (Le Cellier and Garden Grill) and others that were just OK (HDDR and Cape May Breakfast). Even with all the bad reviews recently we did not experience anything bad or have any complaints! Can't wait for next year to try more places

Glad to hear you had a great trip with your family! What a great way to dine for Father's Day at Flying Fish!

I'm glad you noted your 'Ohana experience.... that will be a new one for me soon. So that dessert is as fabulous as people say??

The pufffed french toast at CP, I really want them to set a basket of that on my table like they do with the bread baskets for some of the TS dinners! :rotfl2: I'm there with you dreaming about the delicious goodness of those little things!

Thanks for taking the time to share. :)

Great reviews! I am so glad you were happy with 'Ohana. I will be there for the first time in October and I can't wait! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

It sounds great. Aside from the waiter but unfortunately that happens.
I think the Epcot princesses are a staple for us too, they are just perfect. I am so glad it was all so good.
P.S. Yes I am stalking your posts. LOL:)

What a great idea. If they ever open a restaurant at WDW where they do that, I am totally there :thumbsup2

OP, thank you for your reviews. I'm glad your experiences were mostly positive. Shame about the service at Flying Fish. I can't say we've ever had problems like that - maybe the server was having a bad day or wanted to be at home with his own young children on Father's Day (not that that would be an acceptable excuse for poor service or indifference). I've got to say that, if a server ever actually sighed if I asked them for something, I would be mightily annoyed and it would definitely have an impact on their tip ;)

I thought about him having a bad day but he was SO nice to the other tables around us with older kids, I just think he didn't like younger ones for some reason. Maybe he didn't see us as "classy" enough for FF. I would have lowered the tip but since we were a table of 6 it was an automatic one :sad1:
