Update: I just found out that the Studio Catering Co recently reopened (in April) with a brand new menu, so this sandwich is pretty new. So is the rest of the menu there.
Holy cow. This sandwich is delicious. I can't believe I'm even writing about a fast-food sandwich from a theme park. It's so good that it merits a mention here on The DIS so hopefully it can find some more fans!
Here's the backstory. I was on a solo trip this past week and I wasn't about to do table service since I was all by lonesome. I'm not wasting that table-service time when I can FINALLY hit the park hardcore commando style with nobody else to slow me down!
I got out of MuppetVision 3D and was hungry around 2:00. I pulled out my iPhone to check the awesome eTicket app (plug!) but MuppetVision had killed my reception. There must have been a lot of interference so I couldn't get it back up and running. I wanted to check the menus for the counter-service places in DHS so I could find something I'd like and go get it for lunch. But I couldn't do that so I stopped at the first place I saw, which (being near MuppetVision's exit) was the Backlot Catering Co. Luckily I am a fan of spicy chicken meals and they happen to have a "Buffalo Chicken Sandwich" on the menu. So I saddled up to the counter and ordered counter-service food at Disney for what has got to be the first time in almost a decade (we always have table-service food, since it provides a nice respite from all the walking and waiting).
Anyway, I was shocked at how good it was. I've always remembered Disney's counter-service being far superior to the counter-service food at other theme/amusement parks, but the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich at the Backlot Catering Co was really good. First off, it was massive. The combo was $8.50 with fries and I was expecting something the size of a Wendy's chicken sandwich, and what I got was easily double that size. If I were not a mid-20s male, I could have easily split it with somebody else. I couldn't even finish the fries. The sandwich doesn't really have a "buffalo wing" flavor to it. Instead it has a spicy ranch sauce of some sort that has a hint of "buffalo wing" flavor to it but not really, since it is ranch-based and not blue cheese. Luckily for me I actually hate blue cheese and always eat my wings with ranch so this was perfect. It's got lettuce and tomato on it as well and the bun isn't a cheap fast food bun but rather a nice sorta kaiser style almost hoagie-sized roll. So the sandwich is BIG. The picture on the menu does not do it justice. It looks half as big in the photo, so I was expecting a puny sandwich for $8.50 which I thought was kind of a rip-off. What I got was a giant sandwich so there's a plus right there (a real "surprise and delight" scenario as my marketing profs would have said).
The chicken is juicy and not at all a "chicken patty" but an actual chicken breast. The sauce was delicious, though between that and the tomatoes it did start to soak the bun a bit. So there's a minus there for being difficult to eat as I got towards the end, but a plus to balance it because of the spicy sauce soaking into the bun (yum!). The fries are standard Disney fare, good but in my opinion always just a bit too salty!
I would eat that sandwich constantly (even at the $8.50 price) if it were available outside of the parks. Despite being from a counter-service location, it was easily as high quality as a similar item that could be sold at any of the big table-service chains across America (think Ruby Tuesday's or Chili's) for about $12-14. Now, that might not be a big deal since those table-service chains aren't exactly high watermarks for food quality. But this sandwich wasn't from a table-service chain, but rather from a counter-service eatery at a freakin' theme park. It's basically fast food, but tastes way better than that. Considering where it came from (even at Disney), I think saying it is Ruby Tuesday's quality is quite an endorsement of the food quality at Disney counter service.
I might even think of eating counter service next time I go with the family. Let's start a discussion. What are your favorite counter service restaurants and food items at WDW?
