A reminder who started the FE magic

yeah, many years ago I queried about who started the FE...As it turns out, her birthday had just passed and I got to wish her a belated happy BD.
Quite and interesting thing to be able to say, "Guess what I started....."

She was on the WBPC in 2005 and we were on the EBPC that same year. Our two cruise meets were very in tune with each other. It was very nice.

I posted this because there is a certain FB group that is not giving her credit. My same link was deleted. It angers me to no end that this wonderful woman is not getting the proper credit. Wrong on so many levels.

We were also on the EBPC in 2005 and remember how in tune the two groups were. We have been on 11 cruises since and no longer participate in the FE groups because we feel it has gotten out of hand. In the beginning days it was a lot of fun and a thoughtful thing to do. She is a wonderful person who deserves credit for starting this.

nordkin, I feel the same. We've been on probably the same if not a few more since then. The FE has changed immensely when it was largely taken over by a specific FB group. It was fun in the beginning. No rules. No one person in charge of everything. No kicking people out of groups if they dare cross your rules. No competition who could give the biggest and best gift. Wasn't all about crafts. It was for both kids and adults. Food and candy (gasp) was accepted. Anonymous was more the norm. Keeping track who gives and who doesn't was never done. Stating likes and dislikes was not heard of. It morphed into something that she never envisioned. It was just fun, fun, fun. I like the simpler days of old.

I kind of brough a lot of how it was back. I started an FE group for our upcoming January cruise. I didn't throw any rules into it except to have fun. I also gave control to the group to add themselves to the FE file. I too have been part of a few FE groups and the rules have been just outrageous. My kids love coming back to the cabin to see the things they've received. They also love going deck by deck and passing out the FE goody bags...I turn it into a game.

You're saying that a FB group changed it, but a bunch of the things you listed as negative are done HERE. That's not FB's fault.

And...everything changes as it gets bigger or more popular. I'm reminded of my dad's rant as we drove through Arizona and stopped in a town called Quartzite. He's still just so angry that they have a mayor now. A mayor of all things. He loved it when it was just a hippie commune type of place. But time moves on, too many people show up, rules *have to happen*, etc etc.

But the way one person runs a FE group doesn't have anything to do with how another group is run. Any group can run theirs any old way they want to run it.

You are most certainly welcome to have your opinion as do I. HOWEVER, the real reason of this post is that it angers me that the certain group REFUSES to give proper credit due her. That is wrong. I don't agree to it. I will never agree to it. I won't quote her or link to it since I don't believe it is run properly. After researching it a little, I have seen several different blogs etc that tells different stories about the origin. One said it all started on a DVC cruise. Some just say, I dunno. It's sad to me and I am entitled to feel that way.

I am right there with you. Give proper credit to the proper person. I have organized a few in the past with one rule, have fun. It is about spreading cheer and getting to know people. We still travel with people we met on that EBPC and we met them as a result of this board.

Another thing I noticed on our last cruise. The lime green Mickey head (DISboarder spotter) has apparently been kidnapped to another site. I saw several people wearing the LGMH in their lanyards, and when I asked them about being on the DIsboards, they all looked at me like I had two heads. I had to explain what it was all about. And I was informed that it was provided on another site by the organizer there as an identifier for their group. :(

Wow, even the lime green is used elsewhere.....shaking my head. Just don't get it.

I think a major factor is this issue is that there are many (and I include myself in this, when I was new) who don't "get" that DISboards and the "other" available sites are separate entities. They think that posting here and there is all the same group. And it's not.

Now, our first cruise I participated in the cruise meet thread (here) we had an extremely large, active group. All group activities, introductions, whatever were discussed, organized, planned for here on DISboards. Some people in the group also were on the other site and there they just had personal conversations (how's the weather, had to take the kids to the doctor sort of stuff). And both locations co-existed as separate entities. That line is all blurred now.

On that same cruise I was also on another cruise board that had a group set up. Both were separate, although there were a few of us on both DISboards and the other board. But the activities, FE exchange lists were all separate.

I think many newbies don't get that there isn't just ONE FE group (or cruise meet group), there could be several, on different sites.

Here's a couple of old threads about the LGMH thing:

With that being said Princess Shmoo, even Travel Agents have jumped on the band wagon with the FE thing with out any mention of the origin. It has just sky rocketed with the origin and intent being lost. Not all changes are good or right. Maybe because I am an oldie here lurker first and then started posting in 2001, that I don't "get it".

Thank you for this reminder! It makes me sad that the link explaining how it all began would be deleted. When I first discovered this forum and heard of FEs, I thought that it sounded so fun. A fun way to spread the pixie dust to our fellow cruisers. On our last cruise I ran into a lady complaining about participating because she had spend a lot of money and all she got was something that only cost xx amount from one cabin, like it was some sort of competition. I have seen some of the items given and it would be far too costly, and stressful, for me to participate if that is what is expected.

Thank you for posting this - I always knew it was started by a DISer but didn't know her name.

Agree.

Credit to " Debbie, who had the idea and started it, she was posting under the name EpcotKilterFan via these boards, note via these boards, that's the route she choose and not created by the Dis or owned by the Dis.

Facebook started in February 2004, it was not widespread then. She started it in 2005, and popular use of FB started far later, and people using FB for cruise meets didn't establish itself until years later.

At that time message boards like this were at there peak, they started a lot earlier, but message forums are now bulky, are considered past there peak, and you can do so much more on social media.

On FB people can't hide behind a fake name, have to tell the truth, or be found out quickly, it's more secure as you have to be a member of that cruise group and be accepted by administrators, and so posting private information and family photos can't be seen by all unless you choose that.

Here a few who are not on your cruise, will jump in on FE rules etc, and put people off posting on the threads here.

My cruise in July, I have made great efforts to keep the Dis cruise meets thread going, and it has limited posts here, but we are active " elsewhere with 140 members who choose to post there. The posting guidelines here seem to have made it " impossible for many to post here and there, so they choose elsewhere.

In social media, it's accepted message boards have had there day, many are closing down, many now have one or two regular prolific posters and new people come, ask a question, meet up and go.

Technology gets more specific each month, maybe each day, if you want to stand in the sea and tell if not to come in, you can, but it will always come in. You can't stop it.

FEs were started by a cleaver person, using a message board, not owned by anyone, but many enjoy them nowadays.

Maybe FB will get replaced in the future, like message boards and blogs, it's people's choice.

Why on earth would they (those OTHER people) use lime green.....
I Know the color spectrum is extremely limited and all, but what would be their purpose in choosing the same color? There is no real benefit (monetary or other) in "stealing" a DISboard identifier, so..............?
No wonder I'm getting old and crotchety...
