A RED room, anyone?

popcorn:: Howdy Stranger! Long time no talk to, I was just thinking about you the other day, how you been?

As I type this I am on vacation at a friend's house in her red kitchen. It is a dark red with white trim and I love it. In my last house I had a burgandy/red bedroom and loved it. I am going to have a Disney bedroom when I get around to painting my bedroom and think I will go with tan on 3 walls and red for the one main focal wall behind the bed.

So GO FOR IT! And post pictures when you are done!

And quit being such a stranger on the CB--the popcorn:: is low around here!!

Hello, my friend! Hello!! No word of a lie-I was sitting with a glass of wine not more than an hour ago-and thought of you! And giggled over our TY Days...and here you are! :goodvibes Here ya' go...popcorn:: popcorn:: popcorn:: popcorn:: Is that enough to tie you over a bit? Oh, my...those early morning visits from TY....:rotfl: Hey, did you get another little gift from our beloved TF?! :wizard:

The latest issue of Cottage Living magazine has an article on a family that has a lot of red throughout the whole house. That might give you some ideas.

I am about to paint my utility/mudroom red. I've chosen a Benjamin Moore color called million dollar red.

Good luck!

We did red in our guest bedroom. I always wanted a red room and I really love it - sorta a pain to paint but worth it. I was going to do an accent wall but then I decided to go all the way with the red and am glad I did.

The picture color is a little off, it's not quite as bright.

i LOVE red walls. Red is a calm soothing comfy color. They use red in alot of Chinese design. Black goes good with red too, but red is definately awesome to use as a wall color.
Oh and IMO red walls look best with dark furnishings :)

Our dining room is a Ralph Lauren red. I'm not sure of the exact color, I will look for the swatch. We love it! It's so rich and warm. I agree with all of the other posters, it took a good 4 coats before it looked good. I was a little scared when we first started but after a couple coats, it turned out great!

A helpful hint for any future red painters, use a medium to dark grey primer first! Most paint stores will color match a grey primer for the shade of red you are painting.:thumbsup2

Love, love, love the colors! We are going with subtle black accents, too-the framed photos of our trips will be in black frames-we have a "sleek" custom built work station all along one wall that has black trim-and a glass top that has fabric beneath it right now so it can be easily changed to suit the room-thinking of putting Disney menus under the glass with a solid color background. Again, thanks for sharing the pic! It looks fantastic!! :thumbsup2

Thanks! We have black framed black and white prints of Paris on the other wall and the contrast is nice.

I did use a grey primer, 1 coat, with 2 coats of the red. 3 coats total isn't too bad I suppose. I hear that Behr reds are really difficult to paint so we used American Tradition primer and paint and it worked well.

Ooooh! Thanks for the tip! I now remember also hearing of using a pink primer. Or was that to cover up red walls? Oh, heck. I don't remember. Think I'll just pour myself another glass of wine now..:rotfl: No, not red wine...love red walls, hate red wine.

What a great response I am getting already! I think I need to come over to the Community Boards more often. ;) Anyhoooo.....Have any of you used one of the Ralph Lauren reds?

Yep . . . we used red in my son's bedroom. He has a blue racecar bed and theme. We have blue corduroy curtains from Pottery Barn Kids. I think the RL color we used is stadium. It looks good, but it took at least 5 coats!

Worked with our old furniture

and with our new darker stuff

and of course at Christmas

We really like red in a house. We did the kitchen in our old house in red too - I have pics of those somewhere too...
We have 3 full walls and one mostly knee wall - that opens to our kitchen painted red in the family room. We picked up the red and carried it through on the bulkhead in our dinette area and use red accents in the kitchen. It's very homey and warm. Commit to it and you'll like it.

Looks wonderful! :thumbsup2 Red really is an inviting color, isn't it? Do you remember what brand/color you used? You did a great job! :goodvibes Would love to also see the kitcehn from the old house, too!

Ahhh! We think we have narrowed it down to either RL Stadium, which you used, or RL Dressage Red. The problem is, I don't think we will ever know until we choose one and start painting. We were leaning toward Dressage, yet it looks totally different in the RL catalog as it did in the swatch and online etc. Think I can call Ralph and let him decide? :rotfl:

Oh You beat me to it.I was just about to reply. We learned the hard way after it took a gallon of red paint for one wall in our bedroom and still was not all the way covered.:scared1: We really burnt ourselves out when we were painting red.We were just not smart enough to ask someone what to do.:rotfl2: Then DH was at work one day and there was a painter there painting a room and it was red and DH asked him and thats what he said to do.
So please safe yourself and primer with dark grey first.

Why not?
Or, fold both paint chips in half, put them in a pair of upside-down Mickey ears, pull one out, and let "Walt" decide . . .

Thanks! It's definately us. The first time we painted the room we used our tinted primer and Ralph Lauren since everybody raved about that - two coats and a ton of streaks later we were less than impressed. We ended up finishing with 2 more coats of Behr and were happy with our room and weren't going to touch it for a very long time.

Flash forward a year and DD (then 3) decided to do a little painting on her own. Long story short - she prefered pink and purple to our red and also redid the back of the couch while she was at it. A trip to Lowes and another coat of a slightly darker shade and we have our current room.

The couch she painted stayed with us for another year (with a blanket tossed over her artistry) until we sprang for leather.

In all of our reds I remember only one shade - Cranberry Bog - but I don't remember which red that was - may have even been at the old house. I'll post the old kitchen pics tomorrow.
