A question for parents.....

With DD it was around 2 years. She was trained when she was 2 years 4 months, when DS was born, then she regressed.

DS started later. He didn't start until 2 years and 8 months, and wasn't trained until about 2 years, 10 months. I was afraid he wouldn't be able to go to preschool because he wasn't trained.

I didn't really potty train. I bought her a potty and let her use it when she wanted. On her 3rd birthday, she started using it and only had a handful of accidents after that. I never really pushed it and she just kind of did it all on her own. I've heard boys are harder though, so who knows if I will get that lucky this time. ;)

It's because she's missing the Y chromosome.;)

My dd was potty trained by 3. My ds was about 2 1/2.:)

Thanks for your replies! My daugther turned 2 in November. She has started to take her diapers off when they are wet and likes to go sit on her elmo seat in the Potty. I don't discourage her even though she likes to pull the toilet paper off the roll;) However, she lost interest and I don't want to push her, I think she is a little young. That's why I was curious about the age other kids started and I wasn't sure when I should start to encourage her to use the potty, thanks!

DS#1, was dead set against it. He finally gave in after he was 3 1/2.

DS#2 was officially potty trained at about 2yrs 10 mos.

I just recently read an article on the typical age for potty training and I found this stat.

20% are fully trained at 2 years of age
60% are fully trained at 3 years of age
20% are fully trained at 4 years of age

The article also mentioned that boys typically take longer (I think it mentioned average 6 months longer) than girls.

My mom started my kids at 2, but they were really trained by 2 1/2.

I never "trained" them...DD#1 was 3 and DD#2 was almost 4!....BUT...they never had an "accident". They are 2 1/2 years apart..so, for 6 months they were both in diapers!!

I just waited with my first DD, as the current parenting experts insist is the right thing to do. Every time I brought up my concerns with the pediatricians, they just said to give her time, that she would do it. HA! She was FOUR before I finally said enough was enough and forced the issue. It took several weeks because she was very afraid to release BMs on the potty. She stopped wearing pull-ups to bed when she was five.

With my second DD, I had learned my lesson, and pushed it at 2.5 years. She was completely trained in a couple weeks, including nights.

Good luck! Your DD is plenty young. If you don't think she is ready, it is fine to wait. However, as someone who has struggled with training a child at 4 and a child at 2.5, I can tell you that younger is easier!!

My dd had just turned 3 and was fully potty trained - no pullups at night, and no accidents. My ds was 3 months shy of 4, but he had other issues going on that inhibited him from being potty trained sooner.

My advice is just let them lead you. If it becomes a power struggle, they are always going to win. ;)

Pete would do number 1 in the potty at 2 years old. He would not do number 2 which drove me nuts. I used to get so mad. He would sit on the potty and then the second I put his pants back on, pow, number 2! Grrr! He kept this up until about 2 months before his 3rd birthday.

I finally gave up and went to Sam's and bought a 68 count pack of diapers. I opened them and had used two. He came running into the living room, "Mommy! Mommy! I went stickie". "Yeah, right", I thought. I went and looked and the first thought that went through my mind was, did I forget to flush? :o

After that day, he never went a single time in his pants again!! As happy as I felt, I was still a little bummed because I had 66 diapers I could not use or return! :p

Our kids were all differant, Our oldest girl was just 2, when she was fully trained. our second a boy was 2 and a half when fully trained, In january that was... however when we went to Disney in May several months later....He totally quit for the weeks duration of the trip. as he refused to use the public bathrooms. The week we arrived home he was back on track no problems. As for our 2 and a half year old twins...both boys, I am waiting until after our Trip in May before formally stating the regular go to the potty routine. Just to avoid the drama we had with our first son.

My oldest daughter was 18 months and fully trained. My oldest son was fully trained at 2. Sons 2 and 3 trained by 3 years old. My youngest, a girl who will turn 2 in April, is starting to go on the potty now.

I introduced the potty when she was 1 and 1/2. She liked it and laughed every time she saw it. She'd use it occasionally. I tried all the tricks (giving M&M's, etc) well that didn't work. She'd go sit on the potty just to get M&M's!

She's an all or nothing kid. There is no weaning or middle ground with her. She had her 3rd birthday party scheduled at Chuck E. Cheese. I finally told her if she wanted the party, she was going to be using the potty all the time! LOL it worked!

I was in class the other night and we have a student who has been living in France for the past 10 yrs or so. She said it is normal to have the children potty trained by age 1. That seems really early to me.

Why would she WANT to?????

My DD (17) started showing an interest in the potty around 3 yrs. old and then we started a chart and put it on the bathroom door (PooPoo & PeePee chart). We told her everytime she successfully went on the potty, we'd put a star sticker in the block. When the blocks were all full, she could go to Chuck E. Cheese.

She had it filled in 3 days!!!!

Wow, I don't think that most kids are really even physically ready that young. I wonder if they are potty trained but still have quite a few "accidents".

We are currently working on this with ds 3years 5 months. I have tried everything I can think of (sticker chart, prizes, tons of praise) and he still doesn't go consistantly on the potty. He will go sometimes if I ask him and he happens to have to go but he does not initiate going. After about two weeks of me driving myself nuts and having to clean accidents off of the couch, I just put him back in the diapers. I still ask him if he has to go a few times a day. The little girl I watch just decided one day to go all the time on the potty  ! I am just a little jealous ;) .

You guys all had more positive experences than I did with my dd. I thought I would never get her fully potty trained! I started when she was 2 or so and she was still having accidents right before she started kindergarten. I was so worried about her having an accident in school and getting teased. Thankfully that never happened and right about that time she stopped having accidents altogether. Nights were another story....
