A question about luggage weight limits

I was just checking the Delta website. It says that each passenger is allowed 2 pieces of checked luggage plus a carry-on, and that there is an additional charge if your bag weighs more than 50 pounds. So, in theory, my husband and I could have a total of 4 checked bags weighing just under 50 pounds each? Right?

What if we just have one larger suitcase between the two of us, but it weighs more - like 65 or 70 pounds? Would we still be charged extra, even if that is the only thing we are checking for the two of us? We were just hoping to put everything in our one big suitcase with wheels instead of wrestling multiple smaller suitcases.

The fifty pounds is a per bag limit. You can have multiple bags that weigh 50 pounds each but don't go over 50 in a given bag or they will charge you extra for that bag. Some of the really large bags with wheels reach 60 pounds when full. I have one I used to use when the limit was 75 pounds and I never was able to keep it under 50. I

The weight limit is per bag.

Thanks! That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure. I guess we had better go with two medium suitcases instead of the one large. :(
