I have been in NC about 10x or so. Once, we even looked at buying a house. One thing we NEVER saw was a home with separate IN LAW quarters. Is that something that exists down there?

We may be looking for a realtor during our May trip. RTP area.

Since I don't know what you're talking about, I'm going to say it probably doesn't exist here.

Definitely exists. I think people that usually have those though build them after they buy the home and then stay there forever. In other words, you have to build them yourself unless you find the rare person who has built one who is moving.

There's a house on my street with one and in-laws live in it. My neighborhood is not zoned multifamily, so I'm sure this isn't an approved use. Nice people so no one is going to complain. The apartment was built at the same time as the house, but the original owners only used it as guest quarters.

When we lived in Chapel Hill, there were a lot of homes with apartments attached. They usually rented to students but obviously it could have been for in-laws, too. My first apartment by myself was a wing of a large two-story house. It had a living room/dining area, kitchen, bedroom and bath. The house was for sale when I moved in, which was great. Unfortunately, it was sold to someone whose son was on the wrestling team as an investment. Eight varsity wrestlers moved in, and it was like living in a fraternity house.

Yes, there are many homes out here with in-laws quarters....however they are normally homes 2,500 square feet and up and start around $265,000

Great! That is FAR cheaper than living here!

Depends on where you are, Papa. You're not going to get a big house with an in-law apartment for any where near $265,000 in Chapel Hill or much of the rest of the Triangle. The one on my street sold for about that originally -- eight or nine years ago.

Yeah, I kinda knew that.... I'm willing to go MAYBE 350..... Still that is cheaper than here in the Philly area.... and we are willing to travel 30 minutes or so to get to RTP....

With the traffic the way it is around here, at least until they complete I540 :rotfl:, you are going to have a hard time finding that price for what you are looking for in a 30min drive.

We are in Holly Springs and I haven't seen any In-Law apartment housing sepcifically here. There are a lot of homes (old and new) that have finished walk-up attics or walk-out basements that would fit that price range. And the housing gets much cheaper the further you want to commute.

I did a realtor.com check of Holly Springs. Looks like tons of homes in my price range. But maybe no in law suites.

How about condos in the area? My mom lives in my condo now, and she could probably live in one down there as well, if she could get a first floor place. Her 1BR condo up here is about 135K.......
