~ A PTR for a CAMPING Trip That Might Never Be ~ *TR Started (link inside)*

Even though my actual camping experience with the kids is fairly low, perhaps all of my reading about the topic will make up for it. :thumbsup2

While living in Australia, we purchased an L. L. Bean tent. I don't remember exactly which one it is (it's packed somewhere in our closet), but I believe it's similar to this one:

tent.jpg

Ours also has a small screened area attached to the front. It's quite roomy, although it takes us (more like Chuck) a while to set up. I think it'll get quicker as we use it more often. We also have at least one plastic tarp to go underneath the tent and I'll purchase a second one to use on the inside (a new tip I've read about).

Next up is mattresses. In my opinion, a good night's sleep is essential to a good camping trip. After doing all of my research, we decided to purchase a self-inflating air mattress. This isn't the kind that has its own pump. It has holes on the end that have caps. When you want to use it, you unroll the pad and open the caps. It then begins to fill with air. We purchased a queen sized mattress at a camping store in Australia. It's very comfy and we actually use it a lot when we have guests staying at the house (no, we don't make our guests sleep on it - we give our bed to the guests). I couldn't find a picture of a queen sized one, or even one that looks anything like ours.

Sully and Owen shared an inexpensive full sized blow up mattress. It worked the two times we went out. I'm not sure what we'll do with Connor at this point (he just slept with us before). I'll probably just buy him an inexpensive pad to sleep on.

We have a couple of light sources, but both are battery operated. We have a flashlight that kind of doubles as a lantern:

And a battery powered lantern:

Chuck and I are big morning coffee drinkers so we purchased this splurge item:

I can't remember if we've ever actually used it or not. :confused3

Of course, we have sleeping bags for all of us. Our bags are nothing fancy, although the boys did get some nice ones as a Christmas present from their aunt and uncle. Since we most likely won't be camping in cold weather, I'm not really worried about having the best bags.

In my previous PTR I mentioned that our van does not have a lot of extra space when all 3 rows of seats are in. I recently went shopping at Craigs List and found a car carrier for only $20. It's in great shape and this will help give us a little extra room to store things like the sleeping bags and pillows, etc. I'll get a picture of it at some point.

The main thing we need to purchase is a stove and I saw some at Walmart for $50 (Coleman) so that won't be too painful. We did have a camp stove and stand when we were in Australia, but we sold them at a yard sale right before we moved back home. I don't plan on purchasing much else at this point. We'll see how everything goes on our first trip out. I just plan on using skillets and pots from the house.

I'll have loads more pictures after our first attempt at camping this spring and show you pictures of our stuff and set up. The next 20 months will be a learning experience for us in prepartion of our big camping trip at The Fort.

Am I forgetting any major items? Time for the experienced campers to chime in!

Up Next...Picture of Me

Looks like you've got the major stuff! Dh bought me a camping coffee maker one year, but it was slower than death! It's a different model than yours, so maybe yours works better. Instead, we use the little Melitta cone holders for making coffee - I already had one from when I lived by myself in a teeny tiny apartment in grad school.

Yeah - it might be something that we don't bring along on our Disney trip depending on how it works, space, etc. How did you use your filter? Did you just place it over your coffee mug or over a coffee pot?

Okay, all the camping gear looks really neat! With that coffee pot, I might be able to brave the wilderness -- it's pretty cool!

My fear is that I would be just like the fiance in The Parent Trap (you know the one the girls are so mean to) -- banging together a couple of sticks to keep the bears away :).

:rotfl: There's a difference between camping in a campground and camping out in the "wildnerness" somewhere. But, you reminded me of when I went to Alaska last year. My friend and I would go for a walk every day I was there and I'd get real nervous when we'd get near the woods. I'd start talking really loudly and stomping my feet :lmao: I never did see a bear, unfortunately ;) Maybe when I go back in July!

It just goes over a coffee mug. Are you familiar with them? Basically, you put the cone holder over a mug, put a cone-shaped filter in the holder, fill with coffee (more than you'd usually use), then carefully pour hot water in the middle, and let it filter through. They pack really small, which is great for camping - and living in tiny apartments! I originally found out about them from my then-bf, who was a Peace Corps volunteer, and had no electricity when he was there (The Gambia, West Africa). But, you can find them all over the place, like grocery stores, etc.

To this city girl, camping in a campground and camping in the wilderness sound about the same -- neither has running water or air conditioning :lmao: .

In all seriousness though, if I could camp anywhere, I could camp at Disney -- I could probably handle that.

Okay, you have been to the coolest places -- Australia and Alaska!

I don't know that I've seen specific ones for this purpose, but I read about it in one of my camping books. We have cone filters in our coffee pot so I get the idea. (Hmmm - a BF in the Peace Corps ;) I'd love to join the Peace Corps.)

Of coures there's running water at most campgrounds! They have showers, flush toilets and everything!! ;) Sometimes you can even get water at your site.

I feel very lucky to have been to Australia and Alaska. I can't wait to go back to Alaska in July. It is so gorgeous there!! I'll do a mini trip report when I get back. I'm going to be in a friend's wedding (she's asked me to be her maitron of honor and Sully might be the ring bearer if he'll agree to it). I get to buy a dress and everything princess:

"Going on a bear hunt, gonna catch a big one, we're not scared..."

But yeah, no backcountry camping for me. I at least want access to outhouses at the bare, bare minimum. Running water is better...

Remember to bring a fan because Florida in November can still be pretty warm, a broom would also be good to sweep all of the sand out of the tent. Extension cords are a must so you can charge up your lantern battery, cell phones, camera, etc. Oh, and don't forget some chairs, either camping style or regular folding.

You do know that you're suppose to read the above title while channeling Cookie Monster, right? Cause otherwise you just think Me Don't Know Good Grammar.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: Cookies gud. ::yes::

Look how blue that sky is! I really miss the sky out there, especially at night.

Australia! Looks great! I thought it had more mountains like in the Sound of Music. :rolleyes1

Hi:goodvibes I see you've started your PTR while I was away from DIS this week:cool1:

I'm really enjoying it! All your pictures are wonderful:)

Your plans sound great. It will be so much fun camping at FW!!!

They have a car top carrier at Wal-Mart for only $20.00 new, and it's huge and durable and nicely made. We bought one on our last trip and it holds tons of stuff and is very handy.

:rotfl: We did sort of go on a bear hunt while I was there. Every day we tried to find the local "Fishing Bear" but never spotted him.

Thanks! Will definitely add those to the list. Never would have thought about a fan.

Thanks for the Cheat Links. Buzz is on board.

Smooth move. Now I have to read your TR. You're sneaky and I like it :thumbsup2

:welcome:

Did Josie come back?

No :sad1:

My idea of "Roughing It" is a hotel without a bar.

I hear ya. I'm going out to a bar tonight :thumbsup2

Yay! I noticed you were MIA this week. Glad you made it over

$20.00 NEW at Walmart?!! Is it the hard side one or the one that's like a big bag? I remember reading you bought one on your trip.

Oh oh...Buzz has arrived...;)

No Josie? :sad1:
