I just don't think it'd be possible for us to fly with a huge tent, 5 sleeping bags and we MUST have mattresses to sleep on. Way too much.

Air mattresses, right? But yeah - unless you get the backpacking, packs utterly tiny types of sleeping bags, you'd end up with all your luggage allowance to tent, sleeping bags, pillows & air mattresses! Well, maybe not - 1 bag per sleeping bag, pillow & air mattress each, 1 for the tent - gives you 4 bags left for everything else...

Lol - I have to admit, the crazy thought crossed my mind that a November Disney camping trip in 2009 might be fun - but then I realized that would mean we'd miss the big family Thanksgiving. Definitely can't do that - we always get both sides of the family together for Thanksgiving - as an interfaith family, that's the only holiday that we all majorly celebrate! (4th of July isn't a family get-together for us.)

But, I do need to plan a family camping trip for this summer, preferably somewhere ds can swim...

Well, we normally have Thanksgiving with Chuck's family who live in PA (*wave* Hi Carol - if you're reading), but since we'll be moving away that June, we probably wouldn't be eating with them even if we weren't going to Disney. But, they might be joining us in Disney World anyway so we could all meet up for a Thanksgiving meal somewhere.

I could never I drove with my best friend in 1994 from Northern NJ to Los Angeles and I thought I would die BUT the landscape in MOST parts of the country are breathtaking! Maybe you will get lucky and receive a discount code that would allow you to stay in the cabins or maybe you could rent points from a DVC member Your tentative plans look great! We have an ADR at the Yak & Yeti and I cannot wait to try it! I LOVE books too and you have me seriously considering buying some books right now! No, I don't think we'd drive from the West Coast to Disney. I probably wasn't clear, but I just meant that if we aren't living so far away, we prefer to drive. We were actually going to drive from here to Texas sometime this summer and camp along the way, but a friend of mine is getting married in July (in Alaska) and she's asked me to be her maitron of honor so that's going to cost a bit. Someday I'd love to do a cross country trip, but not part of a Disney trip.

Ack! I love the smell of new books and how the binding is just so. And I love old books because they haven't had any TLC for long, so they smell of must. That, and the binding is so broken that you could tell many have enjoyed it.

clkelley over on the camping boards used to fly and tent camp before she bought her mouse-ke-t@b and she posted many times with her lists of what she brought and how she packed it all.

Also, what about the possibility of all of you staying in a rented RV? This way the cost can be split, you would all be together, you would need only 1 site and you could then fly if you end up on the west coast.

I am not sure how many Tinah's RV sleeps but I know there are some out there that would have a "master" bedroom with a queen bed, a small bedroom with bunks for the boys and also a sleeper sofa. It might be worth checking into.

Thanks for all the great info! I've seen that thread (Carol's) about her flying down. I'll have to look at it more closely. And I've checked out Tina's site before (but thank you so much for posting them here so now I have them in my PTR and don't have to go searching! ) and did consider all of us staying in an RV. Lots of options to consider and most will be determined when we find out where we're going.

It's going to be super helpful to have an expert here to help with info!

Quick question - does anyone know for sure when the castle gets covered with lights for Christmas and when the Osbourne Family Lights starts? I know MVMCP begins on Thanksgiving, but wondering about the others. Couldn't find anything in my newest Disney book.

I'm going to answer my own question! It looks like they all start at the same time (which is what I was hoping), but I'm thinking it's based on Thanksgiving and since it's a bit late next year, the dates may later as well.

I am flying down and tent camping in october '08. I posted a "help" thread on the camping board. They're really awesome over there.

I am getting everything for myself camping in one duffle. I bet you could do it. the hardest part will be a tent that breaks down small enough.

I'm in for your PTR! I camped at FW as a kid in the early 80's and I remember it being so beautiful. However, the one thing that I really remember is that when we arrived and checked in (we were using a really old RV - not tent camping) they gave us some information about the resort. One of the announcements warned of diamondback rattlesnakes, and I refused to get out of the camper. My poor parents had to bribe me to leave the camper and then I would only walk with my family surrounding me (I was hoping the snakes would get them first ). Other than the snake phobia, I do have some really good memories of the campground. As an adult, I have not yet been back, but I keep planning to bring my kids there for the campfire, etc.

I am looking forward to reading more about your planning.

Travel dates – November 21 – 29, 2009

Staying where – Fort Wilderness (tent camping – no stinkin’ cabins for us!)

Getting there – This is another roadblock that I hadn't thought about. If we end up being stationed on the West Coast, I can't see us driving. But, if we don't drive, it'll be awfully difficult to bring all of our camping gear along. Ideally, we'd drive as that's just our thing.

Tickets – Base tickets for 6 days (we’re not Easter Bunnies – no hopping for us)

Non-Disney Stuff – Definitely will do Sea World (most likely will be able to get in free thanks to DH’s military status)

ADR’s – Trail’s End, Coral Reef, Yak and Yeti, and maybe the character breakfast at the Poly

Must Do’s – Haunted Mansion (never done), Space Mountain (ditto), Spend more time at the World Showcase, Finding Nemo and Beauty and the Beast (haven’t seen either), Henna tattoo for moi, spend lots of time hanging out at the Fort – campfire sing-a-long, beach, horseback riding?, chillin’

What about Memere and Pepere? I think I mentioned that they'd consider renting an RV at the Fort. There's someone on the camping board that rents out hers so that's a possibility. But, I think that would be kind of pricey for just the two of them. Another option is for them to stay in a value resort. Of course, they could always tent camp with us!

My friend Liz just told me about a segway tour at Fort Wilderness. That'd be pretty cool. I'll have to look into it, although this is suppose to be a budget trip

I'm sure I'll have more Must Do's as we go along, but I really want this trip to be a relaxing one. I'd love to hear any suggestions, especially ones related to Fort Wilderness.

The henna tattoo is on my wish list too! I figure if the kids can get their faces painted, I can get a henna tattoo in Morocco -- I would feel so artsy and hip -- I would need one of those flowy skirts, too, to complete the look. I also really like the campfire idea -- I keep looking at it and wondering if I can make room for it in June -- I love s'mores and outdoor movies!

Just found your PTR and I love reading it!

My first thought when I saw your dad was that my husband was in that World Showcase Players show...he was so proud of himself!! I wish I had a picture uploaded to show you but I will have to get back to you later on that!

I can't imagine camping at all, let alone at Disney, so I definitely give you credit for trying! I am just not that brave!

By the way, I love Cookie Monster. He is definitely my favorite Sesame Street character, followed by Grover, of course. I actually found a graphic on the Creative DISigns board some time ago with the whole Sesame Street gang wearing mouse hats. It is really cute...I might made a tee shirt with it for my upcoming trip...although I am weary since the last time I made tee shirts, the black ink ran when it rained.

Your boys' shirts with the swirly Mickey heads are super cute...did you make those?

You are so brave to attempt tent camping. I really think I'd end up running out of Fort Wilderness screaming.

and cool about your dh! What role did he play? Was he King Arthur too? I'd love to see a picture. There's a few more pictures of that whole experience in my TR.

Thanks! Yes, I did make them (my husband made the template(s) for me). I was fairly happy with how they turned out.

That's the plan I really want a tattoo and I've told myself that when I lose 20 pounds it'll be my reward (part of me thinks that's why I'm not losing - so that I don't have to go through with it! ).
