A Problem With DD's Ipod (Mini)

DD tells me today that her Ipod doesn't work right. For some reason, she lost most of her songs on it. They are all on the computer, but they will not download again to the Ipod. I understand if these were songs we had purchased through iTunes; however, some of these are CDs. I think I've read about this before but didn't pay much attention.

Anyone ever have this happen?
