When I last left you Dh and I had just taken the friendship boat across the water at Epcot. We had done some sampling at the food and wine festival although Dh had not found any beer to his liking.
The bus leaving Epcot was empty as expected mid-afternoon. I made the mistake of sitting in the back. I choose it because it was kind of chilly and I wanted the heat emanates from back there. I’m assuming the engine or something is back there. All I know is that it’s warm and toasty when you put your legs up against it.
My mistake became evident when Dh channeled his inner octopus again. After much giggling (and grabbing) I managed to escape mostly due to the bus driver’s enormous mirror and upraised eyebrow.
We got off at bus stop #2 and walked back to casita’s #1. It’s a pretty walk by the fountains and quiet pool.
Here is the quiet pool. Notice how dead it is.
The sun was out and from the weather reports I knew today would be the warmest we would see. Not that it was warm. It felt like 70 in the sun but it was probably closer to 63 or so.
I really wanted to go to the Dig Site Pool. I specialized in Mayan Archeology at University. I’ve been on Digs in Guatemala and Belize. I really wanted to see that pool up close.
Dh really wanted to just go to the room. He didn’t say why specifically but I had a good idea of what he had planned. Not that I was totally against it but I thought we should make use of the sun while we had it.
You see it was close to 4 pm and it wasn’t getting any warmer and if you have ever been to Coronado Springs than you know that this is one big @*s resort. (Think the mods will let that last word there pass by?)
Here is a map of the resort.
There is this big lake that sits in the middle of it. It’s called Lago Dorado and is 15 acres. We were directly opposite the main pool. If we were going to go to the pool, now was the time.
Promises were made and Dh and I were on our way in our swimsuits to the Main Pool. It was a long walk. We walked the opposite direction of the lobby. We figured we had been to the lobby before so this would be our only time to explore the other side of the lake.
The resort is gorgeous. It’s divided up into three areas. Casitas, Ranchos and Cabanas. We stayed in the Casitas, which I must say I’m glad because I think they are the prettiest of the three. Not that the others aren’t lovely. I just fell in love with the arched walkways and the tiled fountains of the casitas. Although I did like the sandy beaches of the Cabanas too. They had a few hammocks here that especially called to me.
We hardly saw anyone else out and about. I remember going to and fro the main pool at Port Orleans Riverside when we stayed there and there was always traffic on the bridges in and out. At one point during the walk (it took about 8 minutes) I was thinking fondly of how the POR pool is in the middle of the entire resort. I was daydreaming Disney would relocate the Dig Pool to the middle of Lago Dorado because if they had done that we would be there by now.
Finally we arrived. They have built a wall of foliage around the pool so you enter the pool as if you were surprised to see it there in the middle of a tropical forest. It kind of gave me a feeling of an entering an oasis.
Here's a picture of a a bird of paradise flower near the pool.
Here is a picture of the pool. I thought it was pretty. The sand pit was huge. Sadly I didn't get a picture of it.
It wasn’t busy. The sun was low in the sky and more than half the pool was in the shade. Which meant there weren’t many lawn chairs left in the sun. Dh and I quickly grabbed one. As there weren’t many people at the pool but those that were there were in the sun making it seem very congested in a lop-sided sort of way. Glad this wasn’t the pool on a
Disney cruise ship.
We grabbed towels there. They had a few towel bins around the pool. Same sort of unit they had at POR and AKL when we stayed there. It was cold and the bin was full so we grabbed more than our far share. But hey, it was cold and one towel each was not going to cut it.
It was actually a four-towel sort to day. One towel on my head, one around my shoulders, one wrapped around my hips (although perhaps not quite as around as I would have liked it to be) and one around my legs. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m not actually in the water yet.
As I’m arranging my things on my pool chaise and pausing to take the first sip out of my can of pop when this very energetic approximately 7 year old boy whips past me falling into me and causing me to spill my pop down my front and over some of my towels.
Yikes!
Luckily my book and pool cover-up were safely out of reach.
Now I am a teacher and a mother and I’m at a Disney resort so I expect that sort of thing to happen but I also expect an apology. That didn’t happen.
The boy in question runs over to his father (I know this because he calls him Dad) and asks if he will go on the waterslide with him.
The Dad is reading a paper. He hasn’t seen the boy run into me so he obviously is not going make the boy apologize.
Sigh.
The Dad sternly tells the son to go away and stop dripping on him.
I guess the paper was more interesting than interacting with his offspring. I always thought that was what family vacations were about. But then who am I to judge. Didn’t I leave my own offspring at home to interact with my parents? Still I firmly believe (and it could be from all the years spent lifeguarding) that a parent should keep an eye on their child while at a pool.
So I watched the boy walk back towards the water, much deflated this time. He wasn’t a risk of running anyone over anymore. My own thoughts turned to children. I wondered what they were doing back at home right now. I imagined my Mom was busy preparing dinner while my dad was racing on the Wii with the boys. Later I found out they all went out for dinner so my imaginings were a little off.
Dh talked me into taking a dip in the pool. I was already a little damp and sticky (from the pop spill people-geesh clean up those thoughts people) so I agreed. The pool was heated but it wasn’t exactly warm. More warmish. We also tried out the slide. Just once. I couldn’t resist.
After that I was too cold to stay out any longer. So we hiked our way back across what felt like forever but was probably only 10 minutes until we got back to our room.
We were cold and soggy. Luckily we still had some down time before we had our supper ADR. Dh, of course had a suggestion on how we could “warm up”.
Where would we go for dinner? Well, if you remember we were at Epcot this morning. So the “World” was our oyster. Was that a reference to where we might have eaten? No indeed it was not. Maybe if I had chosen Coral Reef. Which I did ponder eating there. But the place is getting so many bad reviews on the dis lately that I didn’t want to spoil the memories of the last meal we had there. Instead I will leave you with this clue. It has dancers, live music and great beer. click here to find out.
