We had just been swimming (okay more dipping as it was cold, cold, cold, and I had been dripped on by passerby children and then hit on by my husband. We had gone back to our room to rest up *ahem* for dinner. I left you wondering where we were going to go.
Well, for those of you who guessed we went back to Epcot for dinner you were wrong.
Sorry.
I just couldn't face a saturday night of the food and wine festival. I figured it would be packed to the max. I didn’t feel like watching all the overindulgence and apparently I have an aversion to large crowds. Course that makes it difficult doing the parks which is why I love TGM. Mike said Epcot was red that night. I believed him and avoided it. I'll say it again. I love Mike.

If I have a trip coming up you'll find me at TGM too. I go by the same username (well, minus the second "f". He puts limits on how many characters we can use so I wanted to be the same name but had to modify it. That means I'm not really lying to you just stretching the truth).
So instead of Epcot we went to Raglan Road. The downtown Disney Irish pub. My good Disbuddy Queenofallthings and her sister rave about this place.
There wasn’t going to any drinking going on there.

I did hope it would be less crowded though.
Our ADR was for 8:15. Which is the latest supper reservation I’ve ever had.
Okay I just lied again. Once I had a le cellier ADR for 8:ish but hey, it was le cellier. I was going to take anything I could get. Besides I'm trying to add some drama in here because once again there were NO fireworks between Dh and myself. So I have to keep you all interested somehow. So is a little more truth stretching really so bad?
If given the choice of when to book dinner I usually go for the 5:30 range. But I thought we would have snacked our way round the world and could hold off. Besides, according to Steve Soare’s site (you really need to check it out if you haven't yet. He has all the attraction and character times listed on there. It's only for one week at a time though. I think it changes on the saturday? Someone pipe in if they know for sure.)
Like I was saying, according to his site the music didn’t start till around 8:30 so I was okay with it being late. But then they seated us way in the back room so it turned out I couldn’t see anything anyway. However, I’m getting ahead of myself. Back to the story.
We decided to hit bus stop #2. We had to run for a bus. I mean all out run like our lives depended upon it. Want to know who is the faster runner? It’s me! Cause if it wasn’t I wouldn’t have said a thing about it.
We missed the bus. I just missed it. Dh missed it by considerably more. Remember I won. If it hadn’t been dark the driver might have seen us. For sure if I had been sporting the official lime green dis colour T-shirt I would have been seen. Instead I was wearing black.
I figured we would have to wait another 20 minutes or so for the next bus but it wasn’t too bad. I clocked it at 11 minutes. I guess being a Saturday night they had more downtown Disney buses out. The bus wasn't very full either. I took it to mean I was making a good choice and that DD wasn't going to be busy.
We chatted with a lovely family on the bus. They had a three year old daughter. He was from buffalo but had been up to Canada for hunting a few times. He’d even been to the area our cottage is in and we shared some jokes about the local store. Talk about small world. Isn't it wierd how interconnected we all are?
Anyhow, his wife was from Spain. She was gorgeous and had this very sexy accent. At least that's how Dh described it to me later. They lived in California now but had come to Disney for the weekend. They were just going to check out downtown. They didn’t know what to expect or to do.
Normally I don’t try to push my Disney expertise on people. Especially while actually at Disney. I figure they’ll just be frustrated they missed out on something and I’ll end up looking like a know-it-all-show-off.
Please know I don't mean to get up on my high horse about this but I have actually spent hours doing research for all my trips. I work hard planning and figuring out what are the best options for my family. That planning takes alot of time and effort. I don't usually want to just give my knowledge away. It's not like others are in danger if they don't understand the fastpass system or spent 2 hours waiting to ride Dumbo. I'm not a Doctor with-holding crucial medical help from people. So usually I just plead the fifth on vacation when people ask me anything.
No don't get me wrong. It's not like I never share. I answer disboard (and TGM) questions and have helped many a friend or even friend of a friend plan their trips but that is all advance planning. Once you touch down on sacred WDW soil and you have no idea what to expect I don't feel sorry for you. You will still have a good time. Just not the same experience that my family will have. I'm on vacation myself and my sign reads "the Doctor is out".
But this family asked my opinion so sweetly. They seemed so sweet and so naïve that I couldn’t resist. They got me at a weak moment. They were going to get off at pleasure island and really had no concept at all.
I jumped in and told them to get off at the first stop instead. We were going on further to Raglan road so we needed to stay on the bus but they should get off at the first stop, the marketplace. I told them about Goofy’s Candy factory, the
Lego shop, Gharandelli’s and the world of Disney. The little girl’s eyes light up at the mention of the life-size mannequin of Cinderella at the front door of the World of Disney. Apparently she was a Cindy fan. They had a coveted breakfast reservation tomorrow at the castle. The friends they were visiting had gotten it for them as a surprise. I wanted to tell them about the BBB Boutique but knew they didn’t have time and so what was the point of getting them disappointed. So I squashed that thought.
“My favorite princess is Ariel” I told the little girl.
“I don’t like fish so much.” She answered.
We all giggled. I don’t usually put Ariel in the fish category. But I guess she sort of is.
“It’s not like we’re going to eat her.” Her dad replied.
“Well, it’s just Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty outside the store. But watch out for Stitch. He spits water at you if you get too close.” I warned them.
The little girl made a face. I guess she didn’t like aliens either. But I found out that she did like chocolate. So I told her all about the chocolate sundaes they have at Gharendelli’s. I felt a bit evil because as I talked about it she got more and more adamant about wanting one.
As we continued talking other people on the bus started leaning in.
From a few seats up a lady asked about the rainforest cafe.
I didn't really want to be a tour guide for everyone on the bus but I didn't want to be rude either.
"Yes, I ave eard of dis Rainforest Cafe" says the gorgeous spanish mother. I realize I am not doing her accent justice but you get the picture. So now she wants to know about it too. This is why I don't share. I'll make small talk with anyone but I'm greedy about my disney knowledge.
"The Rainforest cafe is at the first bus stop. It is usually very busy. I wouldn't promise any little ones that you'll eat here but it is always fun to go through their giftshop."
Before we knew it we arrived at the marketplace. We said our goodbyes and the family along with most of the people on the bus got off. Again I took this massive exit to be a good sign that I was avoided the crowds.
The Spanish made a lovely picture walking away with both parents holding the daughter hands. Then just as the bus was pulling away, the little girl turned towards the bus and waved back at me one more time.
She was so sweet that I melted a bit. Then I felt sad that 1) my kids were getting older and 2) I missed them. Remember they were back at home with my parents. I had a few “diamonds in my eyes” as my daughter used to call it when she was little like that and I cuddled into Dh a bit more for comfort. Of course Dh took it as a sign that I was feeling frisky as opposed to sentimental and it resulted in me batting at him to "just stop". At the very least it pushed me past feeling sad.
Soon we were pulling up to our bus stop. They had lots of construction going on and part of the sidewalk was blocked off. It was not the empty space I had hoped it was. The place was jamming. People walking everywhere and cars circling looking for parking spot coupled with construction and I might as well have headed back to Epcot. Oh well.
I grabbed Dh's hand and dived into the crowd. It felt like I was taking my own life in my hands walking through the parking lot (reminder it’s a Saturday night around 7:45) just to get to the restaurant. A much different experience than getting off at the first stop where you head right out into the pathways through the shop.
We fought our way through the crowds to Raglan Road.
The foyer was packed. The CM gave us a buzzer and told us to wait.
We waited and waited and waited.
It was almost a 30 minute wait.
Since as I mentioned earlier, I usually book dinners for the 4:45-5:45 range, I wasn’t used to waiting this long. Luckily I wasn’t that hungry. Not yet. There were some lovely smells wafting around which soon activated my dormant appetite.
We wondered through the shops. Doesn’t Dh make a lovely Irishman? He's actually Polish and his grandmother is probably turning over in her grave seeing this picture.
We were finally shown to our table. It was a corner with bench seating in a back room. Beside a patio. It looked cozy but in reality it was cold. Very breezy with all the smokers going in and out. Plus you couldn’t see the stage. You couldn’t even hear the music. Once or twice the sound of some Irish drinking songs could be heard but they had a different soundtrack playing in our backroom than what was happening on stage.
We were seated at the same time as another family. They were from Calgary. They had a 9 year old son. We were seated next to each other so I think it was a larger group before us and they split the tables for us. We shared the same waitress. She took our order and then theirs. However, when the food finally came it seemed quite a wait cause we ordered immediately. We had read the menus in the hotel room from allears and then again in the foyer while waiting. So we were ready freddy. Then the Calgarians got their food like 10 minutes before we did. It should be noted that their son ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, which is NOT on the menu. So the kitchen will accommodate requests.
Dh’s dinner came first. He had the Irish stew and a side of veggies. Here is the description from allears.
Sod The Stew - It's beef stew infused with a hint of Guinness. $17.50
He liked it. It came in this really cute caldron.
A few minutes later my dinner came out. I had the pan-fried chicken. Here is the description from allears.
Jus Chicken - Pan-seared Breast of chicken, with roasted baby carrots, and mash. Served with mushroom Spinach cream sauce and a Port Wine Jus $18.95
The chicken was steaming hot. The carrots and potatoes were not. In fact they were cold. So I did what I never do. I sent them back. However, that meant since they took my whole plate away that I had to wait even longer to eat. Dh was almost finished before I started eating. The Calagarians were on dessert when I started eating.
I would have been steaming mad if that dinner hadn’t been so darn good. The carrots were roasted just so, the chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The mashed potatoes melted in my mouth and the crème du la crème was that mushroom spinach cream sauce. Wow!!
We ordered our dessert when they brought me my food. We also ordered the check. I wasn’t waiting any longer.
I had the dunbroady kiss and Dh had an apple and raspberry tart. Here is the description from allears for the kiss. They don't have Dh's tart listed.
Dunbrody Kiss - Chef Dundon's gift to America. Chocolate. Add chocolate. Then add some more. With us? $8.99
The kiss had some crunchy bits in it. I think they were corn flakes. I didn’t love it the way I loved my dinner but I enjoyed it. I mean it was chocolate.
DH didn’t really mention his tart but I noticed he never asked if I wanted any or did he leave any on his plate so it must have been good.
It seems that they have a rule at Raglan road. Those that arrive together must leave together. although the Calgarians were finished much earlier than us they didn't get their check till we did. It was so late that their son was actually sleeping on the bench seating. Something my youngest has done many times. Again those sentimental feeling started popping up but I did not make the mistake of turning to Dh for comfort again.
It was 10:30 when we got out of there. So my final opinion of that place is to avoid it on a Saturday night. I would have been just as well off at the food and wine festival I think. I loved the food. I loved the décor and although I was disappointed in not seeing the show. I found out later it was just one dancer. In fact the dancer gave us our beepers at check in. So I didn’t miss much. I would go back again and I would take the kids.
After dinner I wanted to do some shopping. Dh didn’t really but then when does he ever want to shop? We hit the world of Disney first. I got a photo album to keep the pictures from this trip in, a book the Kingdom Keepers II and a new antennae topper. This time I got Cindy’s coach. I used to have Tink but she flew off somewhere. I can happily say that Cindy’s coach is still alive and kickin on my vehicle.
While we were in the world of Disney we ran into the family from our bus ride. They reported back to me that they made marshmallows at Goofy’s, took their picture with the Cinderella statue out front and from the telltale signs of chocolate down the front of the little girl’s clothes I knew she had her sundae. They had a ton of merchandise in their baskets to buy. All frilly and princessy. I really miss that stage. It was nice to bump into them again. Once more our parting left me feeling lonely for our own kids as well as sad that they are growing up.
Up next we went to basin. I had never been here before. It was just the right place to perk me back up. It was hard to choose but I got some soap for home and the cottage and some mix your own bath salts for my own Cindy (DD9) at home. I will have to bring her here on our next trip.
We took the bus back home, watched some TV. The first Zorro with Antonio was playing. We dozed off around 12:30 or so with visions of tomorrow’s Halloween party dancing in our heads.
Up next what to do with ourselves while waiting for the
MNSSHP to begin? Click here to find out.
