I love reading these! I'm a journalism major - I can't help editing as a I read!
There is one I hate on another board - someone uses "residence" instead of "residents." It drives me bonkers! This person should know better. So when he talks about the residence voting, I have visions of houses walkling down the street to the polling places!
I hate people that talk as of an accent that your neighborhood uses.
I also like hate it like when like people use like LIKE after like every like other word like. It just gets really annoying. It's not as if they are tryinging to say a simile.
Simile The fox cleared the hedge like a horse jumps a hurdle.
How about "incidentses" instead of instances or incidents?
My ILs both ask me if I want "a corn" or "a coffee". ARGH! It's an ear of corn and a cup of coffee!
Of course I make people crazy when I finish a roll of film and say "It's all." I was in college before I got called on that one. Evidently it's PA Dutch & it's the way everyone said it around here. I couldn't even think of how to answer them at first when they asked "All what?"
Originally posted by Maleficent13 It really bugs me when people use "would of" "could of" "should of" instead of "would have", "could have", "should have".
I just got a work email that used the phrase "could of" about 6 times.
Tkyes--I KNEW you had to be from MN when I read your post! I hate that hate that hate that!!!
The a lot thing and confusion over when it needs to have an apostrophe drive me crazy My newest favorite is the word "orientate." Have you read the definition of "orient"--ugh. I with the you on irregardless too.
The one I hate the most is would've went. Too many people use it now. DS knows the correct form but when all his friends say would've went, he falls into it. I just say "excuse me" and he realizes .
The other one that annoys me is using "I" when "me" is proper! Sally wants to go to the store with Jane and I. It should be Jane and me. We have friends who do that a lot. (Look, 2 words - "a" and "lot" )
This stuff drives me crazy, too. I hate seeing "of" used as a verb, but it's apostrophes that send me over the edge. I also can't understand how anyone can confuse "there" and "their."
I would of posted hear but yous guys polly wouldn't went crazy if myself did that there. Puleeze, dont alot of yous some time get you're words' wrong? Maybe you should of offered a grammer class. This is something I don't now nothing about.
Oh my, that was harder than I thought it would be.
