This dining report is for all the picky eaters out there. You are the ones that shiver and clamp your mouth shut at the thought of most of the so called fine dining restaurant menus. Your favorite meal would be something without any crazy sauces and then bring on the desert menu. You are also the one that loves to read the V&A thread by our wonderful foodies but would only consider trying the deserts – yes I know you are out there lol.

The Cast Members for this trip were:
DM (mom) - Picky but still the most adventurous of the group (not saying much lol).
DS (12) - Very, very picky eater lover of pizza, cheeseburgers, and plain vanilla ice cream.
Me - Picky eater but loves a great desert.

On this quick trip we chose the following restaurants in the following order:

50s Prime Time

As we had not spent much time at MGM over our last trips because that park is so hot during the summer. We decided to select that park for our first evening. I made an ADR at 50’s Prime Time as DM had mentioned this restaurant and we had not tried it before. Believe me that ADR was a very good thing as the people were packed like a nasty old can of sardines (yep another thing none of us will touch) into the lobby. I also heard the CM turning away several walkups. After about a 15min wait during which my DM noticed a clock that her grandmother used to have we were seated at a table for 4 with a TV. This would end up being a good and bad location depending on the attitude one has about this restaurant.

As we were walking back to be seated I noticed the CM had only adult menus in her hand so I asked for a child’s menu for my DS. We were given one with no problem even though he is an adult by Disney standards.

My DS ordered – surprise – the cheeseburger child’s basket. He wanted the glow cube drink so we ordered a sprite in a glow cup for him and I ordered a diet coke for his included drink. We asked the CM about this and it was no problem at all. She even brought out the regular size drink for me. My DS thought this was very good though the cheeseburger came plain and no ketchup was on the table. Thankfully a close table heard us discussing this and offered their bottle so crisis averted (lol).

My DM and I decided to split the fried cheese appetizer and the pot roast entrée. The fried cheese was very different though I was prepared thankfully by reading Mister Disney’s review. It was very good but different and probably not something I would order again. The pot roast was very good though where the vegetables were I’m not quite sure. I think they must have used one whole carrot for the entire roast as I believe we found exactly two tiny shreds of carrots. Also this was the only restaurant that I have been where the kitchen did not divide the portion on to two plates for us. I asked the server for a second plate which was given quickly.

We are extremely private people so we were not really looking forward to any type of display so our waitress worked very well for us. We were able to watch the display on a close table where the waitress was really into it. So if you are one that is going for the experience it really appears to be hit and miss and not something I would count on.

Overall it was a been there done that type of experience. Not something that was bad or good exactly but still not something I would go out of my way to experience again. If we do a MGM restaurant again we will be heading back to Mamas where the food is the show not the antics.

Desert at AKL’s Mara
For those that haven’t visited AKL before Mara is the quick service area at the resort. One might think that this is just another food court until they step up to the cold service areas and find those special delicacies that are otherwise only found at Boma’s – the Zebra Dome – yummy. I purchased a package of these which consisted of two Zebra Domes and two Mouse balls. Absolutely wonderful! Definitely worth the trip over just for these little morsels of flavor.

Desert at Pop Century Food Court

As we rode down the elevator that evening to walk over to the pool the poster on the wall tempted us with cheesecake, more cheesecake, and tiramisu. So after settling my DM and DS at the pool I headed over and ended up brining three boxed deserts back. BTW – After standing in a ridiculously long line for these I found out that they were also available in their cold storage section – duh.

First we gave the Tied Dyed cheesecake a try. I really dislike the flavor of lemon and I think that the Pop Century uses this liberally in their cheesecake so I didn’t care for it. My DM on the other hand thought it was wonderful. The other cheesecake I cared for even less – the Marshmallow so I passed that off also (lemon+chocolate=yuck). Now came the good desert though the Twinkie Tiramisu. This stuff was very good and light in my opinion though my DM didn’t care for it in the slightest as she tasted a strong coffee flavor. Truthfully though I wouldn’t order any of these three again though I enjoyed giving them a try.

Breakfast at Pop Century Food Court

I had heard mixed reviews over this place and now I understand it. It is large and there are plenty of choices but if I could only use one word to describe it – zoo – comes to mind. Way too many people packed in this place to enjoy the beginning of a morning. Give me the small limited selection of the WL (find name) any day. My DS had a chocolate chip muffin and milk, my DM had a pastry and fruit/yogurt/granola cup, and I had a muffin and fruit/yogurt/granola cup. All of the pastries/muffins were very good but the fruit/yogurt/granola cup left a lot to be desired. The so called granola on top was really just uncooked oatmeal (yuck). The CM at the cashier was nice enough to give us two small cups though so DM and I split a bottle of Diet Coke which was nice. This is one experience I could do without repeating though.

Lunch at Alfredo’s

See Alfredo’s A Mother’s Day Review for this one. In one word - Awful.

Dinner Whispering Canyon Cafe

After our lovely (not) experience at Alfredo’s we decided that trying another new restaurant was just not in the program for this trip. So we cancelled our ADR at the Rose & Crown and headed over to the WL. We hoped to do walk up seating as no ADR was possible. We figured if nothing else we’d be able to see the renovations to Roaring Forks for our upcoming trip to WL in July.

I checked in at the podium and was told a 60-75 minute wait. After trying Disney Dining one more time for options at other locations we decided to go ahead and wait. Only 30 minutes into our wait our pager went off. The new pager system works great as it allows you the freedom to enter into the gift shop and walk around the lobby area without fear of missing your call.

We were seated very quickly and had a nice CM that wasn’t over done by WCC standards. My DS ordered (can you guess yet) the cheeseburger kid’s basket. He had asked for and nicely received this menu with no problems. He also had the bottomless milkshake in (yep you guessed it) vanilla. As the cheeseburger came plain he asked for ketchup and received about 20 bottles from all over the room. He loved this and returned the favor later on during our dinner.

My DM and I both wanted the roasted chicken so she ordered the appetizer salad and I ordered the roasted chicken too share. The potatoes that came with was melt in your mouth yummy. Yukon Gold and the best potatoes I have ever had in WDW bar none. The chicken was very juicy and with the 3 pieces it was plenty to share as we are light eaters. Oh and the cinnamon apples – I can still taste those when I think back – wow.

Overall we enjoyed our evening meal. Definitely the best one of the trip. I do think some would have been slightly disappointed in our waitress as she wasn’t as in character as some of the others. However we were very pleased with the service.

BTW – My DM did choose inside seating this trip to avoid having the salad dropped on her from the previous trip. Sorry mom had to slip that in (lol).

Desert Cart at MK

As we wanted to fit in all 4 parks in this quick trip we headed over to MK for EMH. Before heading out we grabbed 2 Mickey bars and 1 orange fruit bar. Deliscious as always! The orange fruit bar tasted like the pushups sold by the Swan man.

Breakfast Tusker House

As we did not want to face the Pop food court again we headed over to AK. I had read that the Tusker house served a nice CS breakfast. We ended up all choosing muffins as the line for the hot items was lengthy. There is an outside line for the pastry items that we noticed later also. These are the normal muffins served everywhere but were tasty and filling for a quick breakfast.

Desert Cart at AK

As we were leaving to head to the airport we grabbed 2 last Mickey bars and a bottle of water. Can you imagine anyone turning down a Mickey bar – yep my DS does – amazing.

Overall impressions

As we are heading back in July I made ADRs for both trips earlier this year. After this trip’s experience I will be changing several back to old favorites.

Wow you guys are picky! It's okay, so am I. I agree with you about the POP food court. I still love it there though. Wasn't a fan of their breakfast at all, and didn't like the cheescake, but I got the chicken & fries a couple times which was good!

Sorry about your bad experiences, but it still sounds like fun! I want to try WCC dinner one of these days, i've only had breakfast there (it was excellent, though!)

Thanks for your reviews. :wizard:

Thanks for the reviews--lots of other "picky" eaters out there who canl benefit from your comments.

Thanks for the reviews. I'm sure there are alot of "Picky" eaters out there who will be helped by your reviews also. :)

Thanks for the report. My DD is also an extremely picky eater and unfortunately, alot of our CS choices are made based on her tastes(would love to try CS in WS....but I am not sure she would agree)

Thnak you for the WCC report we have an ADR for Sept. and we have never been before. Was kinda worried about all the hoopla since we are on the shy side. However, I still think my DD's would love to witness the interaction at the other tables. Maybe even give out a bottle of ketchup or 2 but that's about it.

YAY for picky eaters! :rotfl2:

DH & I are picky eaters too---some restaurants we have completely avoided because of the menu selections. It gets tiring to alter meals around our dislikes, so we stick to our favorites.

Great reviews!! :thumbsup2

I am going in December with my DM and my DD,6. Myself and my daughter are both picky eaters and we have decided to try the dining plan this time. I'm starting to get really nervous about the TS meals. I'm considering nixing the DP and just paying OOP for meals as I think we will have trouble finding 9 TS meals that we will enjoy.

Thanks for your review. Sounds a lot like my family!!!

Thanks you all for the replies :goodvibes

We will be returning to WDW in July but will be going back to old favorites. For those in the picky eater crowd such as my family I would suggest:

Mama Melrose - Our favorite
Beaches & Creme
Sci Fi - Stick to lunch though
WCC - Very good and willing to make substitutions
Le Cellier - Plenty of plain options
Crystal Palace - Breakfast only
Donald's Restarous - Breakfast
Chef Mickeys - Breakfast (have not tried dinner)
Fort Wildernss Buffet
Rainforest Cafe

I love all the reviews on this board. Even the V&A reports which have stuff I wouldn't even want on the same table with me are very interesting.

Thank you for replying :goodvibes

Thanks for the reviews, we're just as picky as you.

Hmmm, we're going to WCC, Le Cellier, Beaches & Cream, 50s Primetime, Raglan Road and Crystal Palace, so 4 out of 6 is pretty good. :)
However, is Crystal Palace really bad at dinner? :confused3 We're not really not into big breakfasts because we wouldn't be able to walk after that.

Your family sounds like my in-laws. In particular your son sounds like my MIL. She only gets hamburgers or steak everywhere I've ever dined with her. I think I have seen her eat chicken too-LOL. FIL is only slightly better. DH used to eat similar but I've completely converted his eating habits.

Funny thing is that whenever we eat at a restaurant with them they can't stop talking about how amazed they are that my kids eat so many different foods. They'll say something like "your kids are really some adventurous eaters"...this comment came after they saw my kids eat ceasar salad, garlic mashed potatoes and pork tenderloin. They crack me up. :teeth:

Glad you were able to find places your family enjoyed. What was the deal with Alfredo's?? I'm dying to know. :)

OMG, you did NOT just tell me that there is a dessert called Mouse balls. ...

Dh is a picky eater and he did not love CP for dinner, but it worked out ok. I thought it was very good and so did DS8.
