Amnesty International has an open petition to the government of Nigeria to end death by stoning after the sentence of this young woman. She is set to be stoned to death soon. To sign the petition, go here:

I dont want to start a debate on this really. I was just so saddened by the story. :(

I thought the same thing Jules but apparently a petition that was organized by Amnesty in the past was succesful in saving another womans life who was in this same position. I just thought any little bit would help.

This story is in this weeks Time magazine.

I guess I thought that even if *might* help it would be worth 2 seconds of my time. :)

What good will a petition do?

An petition that pleads for her life might bring enough international attention for the government of Nigeria to spare her life. It was a local tribunal that sentenced her, and while the president of Nigeria has expressed his dismay at the sentence and expressed his hope that it is not carried out (he says he will "shed tears" if she is stoned) he has done nothing to stop it.

I signed it. What happens is everytime someone signs the petition another email is sent to the Nigerian president.

The world would be a better place if the entire middle east didn't exist. Do they do *anything* healthy or humane over there???

It is signed and I passed it on to some friends and family.

We use lethal injections..............which make us much more HUMANE than the Nigerians.........NOT:( :( :( :(

Lethal injection for adultery!? Wow, things have really gone downhill in Washington!

Nigeria in the middle east... I stand corrected. It was the Islam thing that got me in a tailspin. Maybe I should have merely referred to Muslims in general.

"....convicted of adultery by an Islamic Sharia court in a predominantly Muslim area in northern Nigeria. The judge who convicted her decreed that 35-year-old Safiya will be buried up to her neck in a pit and then men - only men - will begin hurling rocks at her head until she is dead. The attorney general of Sokoto state, Aliyu Abubakar Sanyinna, says of Safiya’s sentence: 'It is the law of Allah. We are just complying with the laws of Allah, so we don’t have anything to worry about.' "

Yes lethal injection is far more humane than being buried up to your neck and then having rocks thrown at someone until they are dead. That will take awhile and it will be torturous.

While the merits of execution in general can be debated, it is absurd to compare this case to lethal injection on someone who has taken someone else's life.
