I have an indoor cat that is doing some strange things lately. His hair around his neck is clunking up and then falling out. He has some bald spots around his neck to. This is not happening anywhere else on his body. Just his neck. He don't have a collar so that is not the problem.

Does anybody know what this is or what I should do?

Thanks

Hey! Take it to a vet! Might be allergies...could be something else. Ya never know until you check it out with a doctor!

Yeah, I agree -- that sounds like something you should have a vet look at. Let us know what you find out?

My cat has kidney disease (he's 18 1/2). I read later that hair falling out is a symptom. His was just on his back.

Not to imply that your cat has something that major, but you might want to get him checked.

Good Luck

Thanks for the help. While we are waiting for the appointment on Monday could you tell me where I could maybe look or go on the internet to maybe find out what it is?

I am hoping it is just allergies.

Other then the hair falling out you could not tell anythingis wrong with him. He is wide awake and loves to play. He is eating jsut fine also. I don't know if this would help you maybe know what is wrong but he is a persian cat.

Vetinfo.com is a great information website for cat and dog owners.

I can't thank you guys enough for this. I will let you know what I find out. Please pray for him.

Hey Chris,

It will be okay. If your kitty is eating and drinking that is half the battle.
Hopefully, it is just allergies. Have you guys put anything new on him? Flea products, etc?

Good luck on Monday! Let us know what the doctor says!

We did put a flea product on him and that is eithor Frontline or Advantage. I forget which one it is. But we ahve been using that for awhile now. So I don't think that is it.

I will be sure to tell you what the doctor says.

Hey. The #1 cause of that is fleas. Other than that, there are so many conditions that could cause those lesions that it's not even worth it to try to guess. The vet will probably start with skin tests, then general blood tests which might lead to more specific tests, then consider behavioral plucking if it's in an area that the cat can reach. It's definitely not time to start worrying. :)

Did you just apply the flea product? Did you apply it late? (would make flea allergy more likely if you did) I have seen a few cats who will lose hair in the area where the product is applied, and it can happen even if there's been no reaction before (actually, prior exposure is a requirement of some types of allergies).
