A Perfect Popup for Someone

sigh......I have always loved these little collector's items. I REALLY, REALLY want one of these I guess it's something about a hard side pop up that I love. I honestly can not believe the seller has a buy it now price on there and one that is so low as well. If it were closer to me, I would gladly pay up to $2000 and just fix and resell, or sell my pop up and keep the Apache. I know collectors would pay even more. The economy must be really bad for this one to go.

and coming in at second place.....I have loved these for awhile too, another good deal! The ends aren't hard walled but the middle is.

Everytime I see someone with an Apache HS or Palomino HS....I covet it. I know. I should be ashamed.

Hmmm, what are you doing looking at campers? You've fixed yours up so cute - of course you could go into the business of purchasing 'gently loved' campers and fixing them up with your special touch!

LOL! I am addicted. I looked around at campers for so many years- I'm now a camper junkie!
I have to look for one for Big DaddyRog...I have too.....well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! ~grin~

I would re-think getting something like that Apache. That is exactly the very first trailer we purchansed back in 1973 (Apache Ramada), same floorplan, etc. I even purchased a complete set of the window awnings like is shown on the end of the one in the link. It went from San Diego to Newport R.I. and back to San Diego up thru Monterey, Yellowstone and back to San Diego. We had it for almost 9 years and that is not a trailer for any kind of cold weather camping and if windy it leaks like a sieve and the heater was almost useless. Our most memorable moment was when we camped somewhere in Texas in a wide open area and the temps got down to almost 30 and the wind was blowing like mad. Never could get warm and with a 4 year old we were trying to sleep in parakas and gloves. Also, the white material was thin ABS plastic that was prone to cracking like what is shown on the roof. I think I paid around $1500 for in in 1973 and it still had the plastic on the mattresses and sold it in 1982 I think for around $1,000.

Finally it used a unique cranking system that was nylon and you probably couldn't get replacement parts if either the gears or belts broke. IIRC a lot of the other PU used a cable system that you could probably fix, but this one didn't use that concept.

I had my '73 Ramada at the fort over the weekend and had a great time, stayed in 1511. I will admit I have added some insulation, but its fairly comfortable, and the lift system is very easy to work on. Cindy F I enjoyied looking at the pics of the pop up you redid. As you say the ABS is easy to work with and repairs I did to cracks 3 years and 20k miles ago are still holding up ( I took the camper out west to see Disneyland). If you keep your eyes out on Craigs list I bet you will find one. My sister picked up her '72 for the cost of going to Delaware and getting it.

There is something about the popups. I wonder if it's something to do with liking "gadgets" or something that takes less space then opens up to give you more space? not sure. When we were looking for our TT (over 8yrs ago we bought it) I was pulled towards the pop ups. We didn't get one obviously- but I loved looking at them and if we weren't such a large family and having specific things we wanted- we probably would have got one. LOL They are jus so cute and then open up to give more room... something about them!

The gadget factor definitely held my interest in these for a while:

They fold down to half that height for travel, and the two halves of the top fold toward the middle to be as short as the base. I was really looking hard at a TrailManor (above) or a HiLo brand expandable camper for a while. Initially because they can be towed by a minivan, so no need to buy a new tow vehicle. And the fact that they have a somewhat usable bathroom. But ultimately I think the gadget factor really held my interest! The prices eventually drove me to look elsewhere... even used ones were going for as much as you'd spend on an older motorhome, and the moho gives a lot more space and a more usable bath (and the maintenance headaches of another motor vehicle).

It warms my heart to see others as obsessed with updating older trailers! Our first trip to FW in the early 80's was in a 1972 or 1973 Apache, complete with canvas patches and a refurbished door. We used and loved that old popup that was purchased for $400.00 and sold many years later for $450.00. After the purchase of a new Jayco popup, then a used Award Travel Trailer, we purchased a LOVELY 1974 Argosy by Airstream that I completly updated with new cushions, curtains, carpet, etc. I'm just learning how to insert pics, so I hope this works. If it does, I'll post some more.

Okay, so it worked!! You'll notice that I had to use fabric that matched the original green laminate counters and stove. The green shag carpet was replaced with a nice brown tone berber. I purchased brand new high density foam for the new sofa cushions and bed. comfy!! I did all this while in a body cast for 6 months after spinal fushion with instrumentation 8 years ago. It kept me busy, sewing while standing or kneeling instead of sitting!

Here's the overhead cabinet that originally housed an "8 track", but we replaced with a CD player. I made the curtains out of a feather-wale olive green corduroy and lined them with a black-out lining to resist fading. I very carfully removed the old curtains and saved the plastic "tracks" to reuse on the new curtains:

Here's the little pull-down shade that I made for the window over the sink. I used the fusible iron-on window shade pellon sold at JoAnn Fabrics and a staple gun to staple the shade to an old tension rod.

Camping at South Higgins State park in Central Michigan:

We camped for quite a few years in this beauty that pulled like a dream!! We ended up selling this on Ebay for over three times what we paid for it. I still miss it sometimes!
