As my brother and I were entering the parking structure yesterday morning at about 7:00 a.m., I spied a familiar face in the car next to us. I was pretty sure that I recognized him from the Buzz Lightyear high score board. He's always posting super high scores -- yesterday 2.7M. As I demonstrated the Peter Tu clap to my brother, our car neighbor recognized it and looked over. My brother asked him if he was "the Buzz Lightyear guy." He confirmed that he was. We talked briefly and moments later he parked next to us. We spoke to him about the ride and how he manages such high scores: his official record is a little over 18M but unofficially he believes he's topped 25M. He's an older guy named Dave (initials DLH). If anyone here is a DL/BL regular, you'll likely recognize his face from the high score board: gray/white hair and a bushy mustache that's much the same.
In any case, we ran into him later exiting BL and he shared with us a number of his secrets. We talked for at least ten minutes. I later applied some of the strategies he'd shared -- like not releasing the trigger fully after firing to reduce repetitive motion -- and found them to be useful. He also explained why sometimes a picture is seen on the post-ride monitor without its accompanying score: something to do with the scores being send to Florida, Texas and then back to Anaheim. He told us the BL score server runs on Windows XP. Sounds like it might be time for an upgrade.
In any case, he was a nice guy and it was kind of fun to talk with an expert. Keep an eye out for him and perhaps say hello. I think he enjoys speaking with other BL enthusiasts.
