Seriously though, I LOVE the idea. I've always said that the water parks is one of the very few areas they've done right in the past nineteen years or so. I really hope it's true!

The last I heard from Ms Tilly the plan was to rebuild and expand the mainchange area this fall and winter during Typhoon's down time. This area includes: High and Dry Towel and Locker Rental, Singapore Sal's (merchandise), the men's and women's changing rooms, the lockers, the donut stand, and a hair wrap stand. Since they rebuilt the entrance several years ago (diverting guests past the shop and towel and locker rentals on their way in) that whole area becomes a traffic jam during busy summer days (why anyone would want to go then is beyond me, if you do come do so after 3pm). The whole area will be demolished and pushed back further into the HUGE undeveloped area next to Typhoon (above and to the right of the park in this photo http://rotocat.tripod.com/1995/typhoon.jpg ) The new area will be bigger and the new paths wider to support the increased maximum capacity that will come with the new attraction. The existing area is stretched to the limit at the current max capacity (about 6800, with peaks of over 7000). The new area has been on the slate for a LONG time, with serious consideration for the last three years. In the summer of 2002 the Imagineers were on site doing extensive balloon tests and surveying the area. At the time we all expecting the attraction to open with the park in 2003. Unfortunately the approval never came. Now it may be coincidence but around the same time Jay Rasulo took office word came around that the project was approved. The timetable for the attraction is for ground breaking to occur next summer and for the attraction to open with the park in 2005. This would allow foundation and other prepartion work to occur during the summer without interfering with guests and then during the rehab the onstage work will be completed. EVERYTHING I have heard has said that it will be a Master Blaster type coaster and perhaps some additional speed slides/thrill slides. If you have a Typhoon park map the entrance to the new area will be where Out-of-the-Way Key is now.

This would be an awesome addition to an already fun water park. I've seen this type of ride on the Travel Channel's Top Ten Water Parks and it looks really cool.

Is this the same rumor we talked about a while back, where Disney might add a Schlitterbahn type water coaster to the park? I vaguely remember the discussion.

If so, I can't wait to try it. Water coasters, by all accounts, are a great addition to any water park. It would be nice to see Disney build that third water park they keep talking about (maybe redoing River Country would be the trick) and expanding the ones they have.

Well, if this does happen, kudo's to wdw for adding a great attraction to the water park!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen this type of ride on tv shows and it looks like alot of fun!!

Larry it is the same rumor we talked about before. By ALL accounts it will be water coaster of the "blaster" variety sold to WDW by Schlitterbahn.

I think it is pretty much a question of when, not if. I also think the expansion of Typhoon is an alternative to building a third waterpark. It is rarely the case that both water parks are closed to capacity on the same day. (Probably about 20 times a year) And even then Typhoon normally reopens less than an hour after it closes. The higher capacity should help keep that from ever occuring (at least for a while).

Thanks, M. Show. I'll admit I didn't realize that the two parks rarely play to full capacity. You always hear horror stories in some of the trip reports, which may not be accurate, but it makes sense to expand the two parks before building another one...although shutting down River Country is depressing.

I remember reading Boys' Life so long ago when it had a big article on the imagineers work in designing and building River Country. Isn't it sort of historically significant, to theme park dweebs like us, in that it was the first of its kind?

A typical hot clear summer day...

Blizzard closes to day guests (ie guests traveling in cars) at about 10:30am or when the parking lot is full. (about 6800 guests)

Blizzard closes to all guests (including guests traveling on WDW resort busses) at about 11:15am. (about 7000 guests)

Typhoon closes to day guests when the parking lot is full or around 12:00pm.

Typhoon seldom closes to resort guests. When it does it normally happens around 12:30.

Most days both parks are reopen by 1PM

Very busy days both parks are reopen by 3PM

Typhoon trys to keep their park count between 6500 and 7000 but it does sometimes peak over 7000.

The horror stories stem from people being impatient and giving up as soon as they hear the park is closed. Hang out at your resorts pool or at Downtown Disney for an hour and then check back (call the park directly to get a more up to date answer).

We are hoping this "rumor" is true. This is our favorite water park by far, and a master blaster water coaster would be awesome!
