A New and More Exciting DVC

I think it's a two way street. Yes, we all bought in and we get good value for what we paid for, but Disney would make even more money by offering DVC members small discounts on a lot of things. Example, offer 10% all Disney restaurants and souviners. Both those items are very high margins and DVC members would buy more.

I'll just pipe in that I, too got optimistic when I read the article. Me? Optimistic?

It seems like the management's opinion of perks has differed a little from members'. I would like to see the two get a little closer together.

For example, this Member Homecoming seems great until you look at the price.

Real perks (not just gestures ) would be nice, and maybe they'll even happen. But I'm not really expecting more than a few crumbs.

Smile ear to ear because Shan just made a pessimist an optimist.

I usually don't look on the bright side about these things. But on this one I'll dare to dream.

Basically, I agree that they have us (DVC members) over a barrel.
I'm not so sure. I suspect that, even given our committment to WDW, our expenditures at the parks still fluctuate up and down depending on our satisfaction with the experience. And the guests who tire of the park experience and high prices and just use DVC as a Florida resort have very low park expenditures.

So there's still reason for Disney to keep us pleased by treating us as especially-welcomed park visitors.

Unlike his predecessor, George Aguel, where DVC was only ONE of his responsibilities, and therefore didn't always get full attention, Jim Lewis will be full-time DVC, and it will be 100% of his responsibilities.
That alone is encouraging to me.
I agree that it is an encouraging step. But I do temper that optimism with the experience that often what DVC (the management ) think is a wonderful opportunity for the membership is not always viewed as such by the people that actualy have to buy/use the things. I'd love to know how Disney comes to some of the "offers" it makes to the membership, I feel certain that anyone who actually uses the programs could see the shortcomings of a lot of the offers we receive, management needs someone who actually uses DVC as a paying customer to vet some of these choices, because I'm at a loss to see who in their right mind would use some of the programs they come up with.

It would also be very unusual in any area of American management for a new employee/appointment to sound anything other than optimistic/upbeat. I sometimes find the mentality of "this is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in a great production/company/division and we have some exciting developments/plans/products" a little too sickly and false. It's trotted out all to regularly, often with no tangable improvement.

Still, as said about people getting married for a 2nd/3rd time, a triumph for hope over experience :) LOL .

LOL, Vernon! :p

I agree that the words spoken by Jim Lewis are typical of any manager taking over a new assignment. But like any manager in a large corporation, he will be eager to put his stamp on the position. Maybe he will see some additional discounting or perks as being overall beneficial to total business.

But if he is dedicated to DVC business, then he might be measured by one thing only....new sales. After all, helping park attendance and/or spending isn't in his job description, is it? I will admit that his position will be responsible for some sort of "customer satisfaction", but we'll see if the "investments" they make for new members translate into investments for all of us.

I guess I'm neither optimistic nor pessimistic about this new DVC boss. As Doc loves to say, we'll all have to "stay tuned" to see how it comes out! :)

Ya, he's probably limited on what he can say. He can't write a letter saying, "we will have less applicable discounts, more trash in the halls, further problems with smoking in non-smoking rooms, don't anticipate any park discounts, we're getting rid of the "welcome home" greeting, our hiring standards are being reduced, member parties will be priced very high, we don't plan on having a reasonable clothing line with for DVC members, and a catalogue is out of the question, pool hopping will be discountinued, bus service won't be improved, new resorts will be further away and you can count on your points having much less bargaining power in the future for cruises and other trade options, those point requirements will continue to escalete for no justifiable reason."

Don't get me wrong, DVC is wonderful, I hope he does some very nice things for us. But the letter is standard new management statements, isn't it? I hope he does some great things. But, we really can't anticipate this just because of this letter. Just my $0.02.

Well, it certainly sounds intriguing. I hope we will see some of these "changes that will benefit existing members" sooner rather than later. The suspense is almost too much to bear!;)

I hate to be a cynic but his interview sounded like so much fluff. What could be in the works-more 10% discounts on already over-priced stuff?

Show me the money, Mr. Lewis!

The cynic in me agrees with vernon; such "rah-rah"-speak is heard all too frequently - just like when politicians quit "to spend more time with their family." But a new face with 100% DVC focus leaves at least some room for optimism.

As I often tell my kids...."we'll see", just keep in mind who signs his paycheck.

I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but with the substantial increases to trading within the disney collection I am concerned. It seems like the old DVC and not so exciting.

Hopefully Jim will come around.

I wish him well and hope his big dreams do come true.

While I think the surveys they occasionally conduct are a valuable tool to use to redesign DVC, I would also like them to establish an "Member Advisory Board" .

This Member Advisory Board would be composed of a certain number of DVC members who would have set term limits, then rotate off the board and others would come on the board. The board would have a broad represetation of DVC members, such as those with small children, those with older children, those who are empty-nesters but bring children and grandchildren, and those who have no children. They should be from all regions of the country as well as a few internatonal members. I would think that most of the work of this committee could be done by phone call or mail, with maybe an on-site meeting in December around the time of the annual meetings.

Great idea. However, hoe about a virtual member advisory board, like the forum we have right here. This is the electronic age, use an electronic forum to gather information about member desires, expectations, gaps and suggestions.

Does anyone remember the silly pass they put out for sale to dvc members a couple of years ago? and all the hoopla and speculation that came before it was announced and what did it end up being? Was'nt it something stupid like a 5 year pass with 20 park hopping days for $1,356.91 that can only be used 4 out of the five years and only on days starting with t and ending in y and only when the average daily tempeture is between 73 and 77 degrees and when there is atleast a 40% chance of rain! Anyone remember that PERK! Enough said, Expect more of the same! DVC knows what we want and they're not about to give it to us! We should start a poll, how many members would like to see all our perks taken away and be replaced with just one! A Florida resident type annual pass at a comparable price! What would the voting come out like 90% yes 10% no, HUM! I guess the only members that would vote no would be Florida residents! And I guess i would'nt blame them! Still thinking:confused:

Only time will tell us how DVC progresses, but I remain hopeful for the future. I was encouraged by the article. My mother used to say, "A new broom sweeps clean." We will see.

How about a DVC member AP that includes a discount on everything at WDW. Priced the same or close to FL res AP but has DVC only perks. Includes Diseny Dining Club.:smooth:

Many have mentioned about a rate similar to the Fl. Res. rates, I will go one further. Since WE have all $BOUGHT$ into WDW why not a LOWER than Fl. Res. rate for our passes? This would really provide an incentive to buy DVC and give us, the ones already owners, a feeling of being more than just a time share owner of some Fl. land. I don't need any more clothing or other items but would go for a full DVC AP as compared to a Fl. Res. Seasonal Pass.

I particularly like the comment Jim lewis made in the VM about DVC members - "There's going to be a lot of excitement, and more prestige and cachet associated with being a DVC member".

I guess at $95 per point there will be. LOL ;)
