The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long way?" she asked.
The guide said, "Yes, and the way is hard. You will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning."
But the young mother was happy, and she could not believe that anything could be better than these years.
So she played with her children, gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams. As the sun shone on them, the young mother cried, "Nothing could ever be lovelier than this."
Then the night came ... and the storm ... and the path became dark. The children shook with fear and cold. The mother drew them close to her and covered them with her mantle.
The children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near. No harm can come to us."
Then morning came. There was a hill ahead, and the mother and her children climbed it and grew weary. She would frequently tell the children, "Keep your patience because we are almost there."
So the children continued to climb. When they reached the top, they said, "Mother, we would not have done it without you."
When the mother laid down at night, she looked up at the stars and thought, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage. Today I have given them strength."
The next day, strange clouds appeared which darkened the earth ... clouds of war, hate, and evil. As the children groped and stumbled, the mother said, "Look up! Lift your eyes to the light!"
The children looked. They saw above the clouds, an everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness.
That night, the mother said, " This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God."
The days went on, and the weeks, and the months, and the years. The mother grew old and she was little and bent over. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage.
When the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather. At last they came to the top of a hill. They could see a shining road with a golden gate that opened wide.
The mother said, "I have reached the end of my journey. I now know that the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone, and their children after them."
The children said, "You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates.
They stood and watched her as she went on alone. The gates closed after her. The children said, "We cannot see her, but she is still with us. A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence."
Our mother is always with us. She's the whisper of the leaves as we walk down the street. She's the smell of bleach in our freshly laundered socks. She's the cool hand on our brow when we're not feeling well.
Our Mother lives inside our laughter. She's crystallized in every tear drop we shed.
She's the place we came from ... our first home. She's the map we follow with every step we take.
She's our first love and our first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate us from her ...Not time ... not space ... not even death!

Having lost my mom in 1995, I can say that this is very true! My mother is with me, and touches my life everyday!

I miss my mother each and every day......:sad1:

This was read during the service for my mom. It is very moving and so very true. I think about the first part of the poem talks about the flowers, the sun, etc., my mom always had the most beautiful flowers in the yard, and a bank about the length of a football field covered in thrift. We would pick handfuls to make bouqets. When there were natural storms or storms of life, we knew mom was always there if we needed her. But she also taught me self sufficiency and to make my own way. She taught that I had to live with decisions I made. Of self sacrifice and service to others. A caring heart, a kind word, a gesture of service. Just as the poem, we walked with her to the gate and then she went on alone. Her impact in my life and so many others will forever live on. My DH sat and wept when we returned home that night and said, "she was more like a mom to me than my own." Her walk has instilled within me a desire to be that kind of mother to my children. I thought of her at 4:00 AM this morning as I touched the fevered brow of my DD and took her temperature.

For all those with your mom's still here, give them a hug or a call today. Tell them how much you love them.

For those of you who have walked this path to the gate.......give thanks for the legacy that she left and all those she touched.

In loving memory of my mom Peggy Ann Sanders July 28, 1937 - January 19, 2009.

My mother's birthday was this week. I carry this parable around in my pocket, since she died almost a year ago. It helps remind me of the very great responsibility we all have, to live our lives well.

I miss you Mom.

Thank you so much Cristy for sharing such a beautiful tribute 'A Mother's Walk' in honor of your dear mother, Peggy Ann Sanders . I remember your prayer request post when she was sick and then again when she sadly passed. Seems you were very blessed to have such a wonderful mother, who also obviously raise a beautiful daughter to pass her life lessons on. :flower3:

My heart and prayers go out to you and all those who no longer have their loving mother's in their lives . However, know her loving memories will warm your heart in all your days, as she smiles upon you and guides you from above, as you see her in yourself and in your children. :flower3:

I am very fortunate and blessed I still have my mother . She is a 16 yr breast cancer survivor and will be 80yo in Sept. Her pace has really slowed down the past couple years, as I see her health declining, but her faith thus far keeps her steadfast. We have a big family dinner outing and special surprises planned for her. She is starting to get excited, as I have taken her shopping for a special BD outfit and will take her to have her hair done. Sadly, I know the pain of losing a dear Dad, I can't imagine the heartache of losing my Mom and praise God every day I am blessed to have her in our families lives. :littleangel:

My mom's was the end of July and it was a hard day, the first time I'd never been able to tell her happy birthday.

The days are still so hard.......I still miss my mother each and every day. I don't believe that will ever change.......nor should it.

Bicker, I think you are correct when you say that it is our responsibility to live our lives well.........too often I forget that. I will try to remember that from now on.
