A month later and we're still full !! ** COMPLETED **

Kona Cafe

I had the Caramel-banana Creme Brulee. The bananas are on top of the creme brulee, warm and caramelized. Oh gosh it was sooooooo good. The creme itself was good as well, but I didn't expect it to be cold. Creme brulee is served hot here. It was still something I would like to take a bath in :)

Coming next : 'Ohana aka The Fastest Ride of the Week

I am not a big dessert person, but I order Creme Brulee in most restaurants that offer it. It is by far my favorite dessert. I always thought that the creme should be warm, but have become accustomed to it being cold. I'm glad that I'm not crazy and it's served warm in France. I suppose it's easier to chill the custard ahead of time and then caramelize the sugar before serving. I'd love to go to France and try the real thing.

It does taste better IMO when it's hot. Here they serve it either very, very hot (the cream is bubbling) or just warm. DM says she's never had warm creme brulee in the US or Canada. That doesn't mean it's not good but it does taste very different.

Personally I'd trade warm creme brulee for cornbread any day :rotfl:

Nice review! We're going to LTT for the first time, so it was nice to see and read about it. :thumbsup2
Looking forward to reading more.

Can't wait to hear about Nine Dragons. :wizard: We are going there for the first time in a long time this August! :woohoo:

:rotfl2: When I saw the "never had cornbread" in the OP, I immediately scrolled back up to see where she was from. All I can say is, if you've never had cornbread, you're really missing out :goodvibes

We just made some today, I was dying for some & we hunted for a recipe online. The result was not as good as the one from WCC but still yummy !!

I knew some of you guys would go HUH?? when I said I never had cornbread before LOL... We're aliens

'Ohana Dinner

I was really looking forward to that meal, mostly since it was our last night at the Poly and I had gotten a late ADR so that we could see Wishes from the restaurant.

We'd even bought hawaiian flowers to wear in our hair and dressed up a little bit (as much as we can get "dressed up" in July at Disney World!).

Our waitress took our drink order and before we even got our drinks someone else brought us salad, chicken wings, wontons and dipping sauces, and peel-and-eat shrimp. A couple minutes later we got our drinks and then almost immediately were brought a dish of veggies, and another of potatoes.

DM's drink, I think a vodka cranberry.

The wontons and sauces were very good, especially the peanut sauce. I'm allergic to shellfish so I didn't try the shrimp but DM had a few and said they were very good. The salad was delicious with a tangy honey-lemon sauce.
Since they'd brought everything together though, by the time I tried the potatoes they were stone cold. At that point someone came and offered us meat from huge skewers. We each had a piece of steak and a piece of turkey.

I'm not a fan of red meat but I loved the steak, the way it had been cooked in the fire gave it a really good taste, and it was great dipped in the peanut sauce. The turkey was so-so.

By then we'd been in the restaurant for less than 20mns - that's a LOT of food to eat in such a short time so we decided to take a break. Bad idea.
The same guy who brought us the meat asked us
"Do you want some more?"

We still had food on our plates plus a bunch of stuff on the table so we said, no thank you, thinking he was offering us more meat.

Well, it took about 2 minutes and before we had a chance to stop him - we were both so stunned - our entire table had been cleared.

DM & I looked at each other and said at the same time "What the .... just happened here????"
We couldn't believe it. DM wanted more shrimp, and I intended to get some more salads and wontons (wontons crushed in the salad with that honey-lemon dressing were really good!). And poof everything is gone.

I should have said something, asked the busboy to bring back our dishes or SOMETHING but I didn't want to seem rude.

Our server brought us dessert, which was really good. We ate the whole thing, since we were still hungry. We weren't offered any more - she brought our check with the dessert.

When we left the restaurant it was 9.35. We'd been in & out in about half an hour. We were highly disappointed,so much that the next morning I canceled our reservation for Spoodles that night - we'd had a great meal there in January and now we didn't want to risk having another bad dining experience that would "ruin" the place for us.

On the good side, the food was really good. We saw a coconut race that looked like fun, we were a little too far to see much though.

I don't know if we'll give it another try. If we do, I'll be sure NOT to say that I don't want "more" until I'm truly done and can't eat another bite!

This is exactly why we no longer go to Ohana. It's a shame because it used to be one of our favorite places.:sad2:

I'm sure there are plenty of good Southern women on here who could give you a great recipe. The two best "secrets" I can give you are: 1) don't over-mix the ingredients or it will come out with more of a cake texture, and 2) use a cast iron skillet which has been greased and pre-heated in the oven to brown it.

I've used two different mixes for years (because I'm generally lazy and because the mixes I use are just as good as "scratch"), depending on whether I want a sweet-ish cornbread or not. I use the less sweet for cornbread dressing and the sweet-ish one for just eating.

Since I haven't eaten at WCC, I don't know what theirs tastes like, but I will on September 10  .

Thank you !!! We had a hard time coming up with the ingredients - forget the mix, no one here sells cornbread mix.
We should have bought some when we were in FL but all we got was muffin & biscuit mixes.

The WCC cornbread tastes heavenly.. I hope you'll love it too :) It comes with butter that tasted a little bit like honey. Oh gosh now I want some again :lmao: :lmao:

So that kind of thing happens often ? I'd read posts from people who felt rushed but I sure didn't expect that.

The last time we were there a few years ago we were in and out in 45 minutes. Not my idea of a nice dinner by any means.

Great reviews and pics, I am so excited about trying Ohana we wanted to go last year but was not on the dining plan. This year free dining and we are eating here on our arrival night..

I am sorry that your 'Ohana dinner was rushed. When I go in a month I will be sure to tell them that I want the courses served one at a time.

I really wish you luck with that, DH & I both asked for the courses to be served one at a time, it fell upon deaf ears. Hopefully you'll be able to get it across to them.:thumbsup2

Garden Grill

This was a meal I'd had trouble fitting in our itinerary. The only possibility was an early lunch on the day we were switching resorts.

We were about 20mns late, as Soarin' took a little longer than planned :upsidedow That wasn't a problem at all. It seems to be one of the few restaurants in Epcot where you can walk in without an ADR.

Our hostess took us to a table on the upper part of the restaurant (not in booth as I had hoped). Soon our server brought drinks and a plate containing flank steak, turkey, vegetables and cheesy potatoes. The turkey had cranberry relish on it and the steak had a sauce with mushrooms.

I had a bite of the turkey and spit it out in my napkin - it was fatty and slimey. The vegetables were nearly raw. We don't cook them long at home either but I'd be surprised if those had been cooked for more than a minute.

My mom liked the squash - she didn't know what it was so she asked our server. It's the yellow things that look like a tiny pumpkin. She liked the flank steak as well.
I mostly ate the potatoes and carotts which were okay.
Dessert was very good. A pastry filled with custard and surrounded in berries - yum !!!

We both agreed that, except for the dessert, the food was just "blah".

The character interaction, however, was another story !
The reason why we booked this meal was for Chip & Dale, and they didn't disappoint. They played with us, danced with DM, competed for our hugs etc.. they were adorable.
Mickey & Pluto were there too and while they were not as mischievous as Chip & Dale they were great as well !

For some reason I thought that Chip & Dale would be dressed up as farmers, like Mickey was.

We don't plan on returning to Garden Grill.
Even though the character interaction was excellent, the food was really disappointing and we can get both the great characters and a good meal at LTT, for example.

It is however the only princess-free character lunch that I know of so if you're on a budget and don't like breakfasts, it's an okay alternative.

ETA :

The restaurant rotates. Veryyyyyy slowly. We didn't even notice that it was moving at all.
