A money saver for AOL users

This has been posted all over various freebie/deal sites for the past week. The majority of the people did not have to threaten to cancel to get the deal. Some employees at AOL didn't know about the deal, or were telling people it was only the BYOA that was $14.95, but the people would just hang up, call back and get someone else that knew about the deal.

In the original posts that I saw on other boards, nothing was said about having to say you are going to cancel to get the deal.

I had the bill for my annual ISP laying on my desk. They want ed $232.97 for the year. I called and asked for some sort of discount, as I have in the past, and mentioned the AOL deal. Instead of about a $30 discount that I have gotten before I was told I could pay $166.95, a savings of $66.02 and that includes a virus screener. That is money I can use to spend an extra night at Disney in May. Gotta have your priorities. LOL

Seriously, I am wondering if we could not call our providers and get some sort of discount. Must cost them a bit to get new customers so it would save them bucks to keep old customers.

Good luck to you all, SG/Linda

That's what I'm seeing on the boards, and that's what the news reported. I too noticed that the original posts (just like on this board) aren't mentioning why AOL is offering it..but people coming back and reporting on having to call back over and over, until they got the right person who would "lead" them to say they may leave, are posting that. Almost all that were asked, said they had to mention Net Zero, or make some mention to the expensive price, and that other sources for the internet were cheaper. If you call and ask AOL who is the offer for, they are supposed to tell you who it was supposed to be for. The news quoted from an AOL source.

If it was for everyone, wouldn't you think everyone be notified via aol, or wouldn't it show up in the keyword billing?

I think after this fiasco, it's only a matter of time now before all are offered it. People who were turned down, are not happy campers...some of them were offered $19.95 (which is what AOL said, according to the newsreporter, will soon be their new price)..but I was getting that by paying yearly anyway...but they wanted the $14.95 deal.

So you just simply asked for the cheaper price and got it? No mention of Net Zero, MSN, or that you thought the price was too high? I'm finding it interesting, that AOL seems to just be giving it for the asking for some of you.

Why are you finding it so hard to believe? I got the BYOA plan for 7.95 just for the asking. It wasn't an "advertised deal" as most of AOL "deals" aren't, and I didn't have to threaten to cancel, just had to ask for that plan.

I have AOL broadband service thru TimeWarnerCable and they told me I didn't qualify for the $14.95 deal but had to pay the regular $44.95 because I was using them to get the cable. Does the $14.95 rate apply to cable modem users or just dial up services??? Am I getting the run around from AOL?

Thanks for any help!

AOL has a BYOA rate meaning if you have DSL or cable, you should be on the BYOA plan rather than the dial up plan. That plan is $14.95 a month all the time. Go to keyword "BYOA" on AOL. I'm not sure why you pay $44.95 for your service.

I should have been clearer who I was asking...which was credit man.

I don't find your rate hard to believe at all..they lowered my byo a long time ago to a very inexpensive rate..after some free time..although even then, I was actually planning on leaving. They often offer "unadvertised" deals to people who already have cable or DSL. For people who call to cancel to go to MSN, etc, they often give you free time, as mentioned here, and they keep extending every time you cal to cancel This is a little different. This is turning into a major discount of AOL rates..and how do they stop it? Most people on the internet know, and are (or were, since they apparently are giving them to all who simply ask) not happy if they aren't getting it..and they want the same deal. Who can blame them..once AOL started offering it to some, who weren't part of the marketing plan..they should have known all would want it.

I'm finding it hard to believe that AOL is so stupid to just offer it to anyone who calls and asks (am I the only one who wonders how AOL will be able to stop this?)...when they made it clear on the newsreport, that this was a limited (in numebrs) marketing idea...one of the AOL employees just posted on another board, it only went out to 2000 people. This is the first board I've read, where just asking was the only criteria. On all the other boards, people have mentioned (as I said before) net zero, etc. So for my own curiosity, I'm interested in what people said to get it. No crime there, in asking, last I knew : )

I assume you are getting your cable through aol? This plan:

AOL*Broadband Svc. This line item covers your regular AOL membership fee as well as the fee for your Time Warner Cable Internet access. This charge could be either for $44.95, or, if you have chosen the plan that includes unlimited dial-up access, $54.95. Members who are paying for the service using their checking account are also charged a $5 handling fee.

If so, then you are not byo..you are actually getting cable through aol..and this discount doesn't apply...well at least it wasn't suppose to. Now, who knows. Maybe you can ask if they'll lower the entire cable package for you by making the part you pay for dial up included.

I just got a note from AOL (must be what another person mentioned getting)..now telling me that my $14.95 special will continue for as long as I keep my AOL..no longer limited to a year. Really makes me think they are looking at a full scale price change.

Thanks for your help earlier today.....all this is still new to me...I just am so afraid I'm getting ripped off by AOL but I do hate to change email addresses and such.......hopefully I'll be able to work out a better rate with them tomorrow.

Have a good night!

I also got the $14.95 rate just for asking about it. But I did call them immediately when this hit the internet.

Friends I told about the deal (not knowing this was some special offer for only certain members) were given a hard time with some very rude AOL employees.

I just called and got it reduced to $17.95 still better than the $23.90 price. I had to commit to 6 months and it will continue after that for $17.95. Otherwise a $25 penalty if cancel before the 6 months.

Anyone have the phone number for AOL?

I pay $14.95 per month for BYO as I also have Optimum Online thorugh Cablevision and would love to have it drop to $7.95 a month!

Please let me know. I can't seem to find the phone number.

I called aol and they said they are no longer offering $14.95 unless you received an e-mail from aol (they look up your account and verify it). They did offer 17.95 with only a 6 month commitment. That was better than I was paying before. Thanks for the heads up. Kinda wish I'd seen this thread a week ago when I could have gotten the $14.95.:teeth:

I called aol today around 4.30 and had my $23.90 a month for unlimited changed to $14.95 a month unlimited as long as I agreed to stay with them for another year which I will because we have been with them for 7 years so far , so continue to call and try to get this deal

I just got off the phone with AOL and had a very nice conversation with a customer service rep. He credited my account for this month and waived all fees until May. He told me to keep in contact with him that more deals would be offered soon. He also said deals like this is the least he could do for members that have been with them for 8yrs!
