A Mix of tips and recent experience...

This is such a fun thread!! My trip is SOOO far away but reading this was like a little mini-holiday! Good point about scheduling DHS after MK or EPCOT. I'm rethinking my plan for our trip as I had MK>Epcot>day off>DHS. Gonna have to do some rearranging, I think.

I would definetly recommend MGM after Magic. I am not sure if it was just us and our moods and timing but EPCOT seemed overwhelming.

In fact I felt like an Ant! Haha...

I love this thread. I'm going to stay at ASMu this coming Sept. Love the information you are sharing.

Will you be posting some photos of the resort for us to enjoy?

If anyone is going to ASMu this year, I have a list started, you can find the link in my Siggy.

Oh boy so we returned home to Calgary today (to lots of snow and -15 temperatures POUT POUT) but I do have lots to share... Since the last post we have visited Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdon day 2 (a non EMH day), Typhoon Lagoon and had some additional All Start experiences to share. I won't post them all at once to make the reading manageable.

To start...with regards to pictures yes we took LOTS!! I have not posted them all yet. Once we do I would be happy to post the link (if I am allowed??) to a photoshare site. I took some cool unusual pics too as I like to remember some of the silly things.

Onto the tips and stuff!

Magic Kingdom Day 2 - Non Extra Magic Hours

This day we had a list of must do's before leaving that did not include any of the major attractions as we were able to do them all on the first day.

I found the park to be very busy still even though this is April 17th however I will say I think being a Non EMH day did keep the crowds slightly lighter. So Tip #1 - If you can handle the energy it takes to go from one park to another (which if you are practising the afternoon break is easy). Then I would go to that parks EMH for the special time and spend the other half of the day at a different park. You will not find the other park to be empty by no means but slightly less crowded. In addition your hotel bus lines will be much lighter as most Disney Resort guests do take advantage of EMH.
I did find (and it could be just this day) that there were less busses and we waited longer for MK on the Non EMH day. Which kinda makes sense.
Main Street first thing in the morning is quite crowded and slow moving. lots of strollers and people getting going, stopping to look, getting organized etc. And if you want a trick stay to your left and walk through the shops. No one is in them and they all open to the next shop almost right to the end. This also works very well for parades although later in the day there will be more people in the shops but still easier to move.
Please don't feed the ducks at MK. We sat and had lunch at one of the restaurants and 10 or more ducks hang out there as every sits there and feeds them french fry after french fry. I know it is hard not to enjoy the interaction but those poor ducks are not going to healthy ones. I wish Disney had sides asking people not to feed them. :(
We ate at Cosmic Ray's. Great fast food place. Easy to get a table. Non fast food choices and quite efficient. It is also well situated to make it an easy place to get to from almost anywhere in the park with the exception maybe of Frontier Land.
You may see a set of Mickey ears on someone that you like and can't seem to find them anywhere. At the very begining of the main stree shops on the right hand side (kinda off to the side) is a hat shop most (not all) can be found here.
We did some of the little things that you dont normally do unless you have time and one was took the train around the entire park. Although a lot of it is greenery, they do have some hidden details set up for travvelers to enjoy. I do recommend this. It is also a good way to get back to the main gates from either Frontierland or Toon Town.
Mickey's Philharmagic 3D was excellent don't miss it cuz you think it may be a kiddie show. I found it magical!
We never had much luck finding a good spot for Fireworks. We were never early enough to get in front of the castle and the crowds would be there sometimes 2.5 hours early. It is hard too when Spectromagic is at 9pm and Fireworks at 10:00pm and 11:00pm. It does not seem to empty. So just remember the Fireworks come from behind the castle and just look for wide open space. If you dont mind missing the front events view it from behind the castle by it's a small world. You can get a chair or a good peice of the ground and as soon as they are over the crowds are light at the rides down at that and so you can easily get a couple in!

Well we really enjoyed a second day at Magic Kingdom. There is so much to do and so many rides I would like to ride over and over again. I was sad to say good bye to this park it is one of my favouites!

We will share some not so good All Star Experience (don't panic future ASM visitors it is nothing to go changing your reservations over), Typhoon Lagoon which was awesome, Animal Kingdom which was a great day and some info on Rain Forest Cafe...

Stay Tuned!

I am also very thankful for your taking the time to keep us updated on your vacation. We are staying at the ASmusic in Sept. We were REALLY reluctant to stay at a budget hotel... but I am so glad we made reservations there! You have made me feel so much better... I was thinking I would be regretting my decision... I am thinking that the kids will LOVE the ambiance of Music... we did POR last time and DH and I loved it...kids did too but I am thinking they would like a little more 'color and excitement'. Thanks again... I am looking forward to your next post!

Ok so still pending Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon, Final Thoughts on All Star Music and a new bonus section....how to avoid the home from Disney Vacation blues (this is especially important as may I remind you we ahave lots of snow wahhhhh!)

Ok so let's talk final thoughts on the resort All Star Music...

I definetly liked it. You might be able to get a classy hotel for half the price off of Disneyworld property but there is no way those properties will have the overall value of the Disney resorts.

Good
Transportation alone was worth it. Disney buses were very efficient. You may not always get a seat but it seemed like when it was busy you never waited long for a bus. Line ups were long sometimes but most of your waiting was spent on loading and unloading. I will admit though that a few times I noticed that Pop Century buses had long line ups and we would get 2 buses before they would get one. Could just be when I noticed tho. But one thing is for sure All Start Movies waited for buses and faced a lot of full buses pulling in. It is hard for Movies as they are the third stop. They do often get their very own bus to try and combat that but when we drove up time and time again they would have a long line and no room in our bus as Music would fill it up. I would say that would for me be a deciding factor not to stay at Movies.

Bad
Food court line ups were long anytime from 9am until about 8pm. The kitchen teams work very hard to be friendly and very efficient but the one mistake Disney makes with these resorts is that you have no where else to go. Especially around these resorts. There is a Mcdonalds near Sports but after a long day in the parks it is too far to walk and too short for a cab. So back to the food court line. We were by the end of the vacation tired of the food choices but I was overall tired of eating out. Breakfast to me was the worst. You want to be at the parks early, you sleep in until the last minute as you took in all of the parks the night before and you dont want to waste time getting breakfast. The best...BEST way to avoid this...cereal and milk in your room. We had the fridge and sure glad we did. We only ate breakfast in the food court twice on days off. Must say though on days we did not have to be anywhere that I really enjoyed their breakfast choices and eating outside in the sun was wonderful!

Good
Mousekeeping was excellent. They were fanatical about cleaning our room. On days off my husband wanted to sleep in late and we would decide to have no cleaning done. She would ask us if we wanted towels, soap our garbage picked up and if we persisted with no she would ask us to sign that we did not wish cleaning and on she went. On our last day we did get towel Animal. My daughter was thrilled! One day we were not there but left the privacy card in all day and the mousekeeper left a bag full of clean towels and soaps etc on the door. In the room she did a great job. The hotel was very clean.

Bad

Wake up call we did not ask for at 7am. Oops...hope someone else did not miss their flight! We used the alarm clock and not the wake up call system. Oh and the wake up call we got was front desk and not Mickey Mouse :( I might have been more cheerful about it if it were Mickey..haha
Good
This really is a kid favourite place. Not an unhappy kid in the place. My daughter loved it and was sad to say good bye to it. We stood in line behind two boys around 12 who were talking to each other about how this was the coolest place they have ever stayed. They put so much effort into fun for the kids it is really impressive. Dancing by the pools, Disney Movies by the pool, new games in the gift shop for people to play, hair wrapping on site, picture drawing on site... there is just a lot for kids to do. This is definetly a hotel that no kid would be dissapointed to stay at. That being said with kids comes kid noises so be prepared it is not a hotel for peace and quiet. It is crazy, full of fun and won't let your family down.
Bad
We ordered a Birthday card for my daughter. We got some Jordan's gift card instead. No problem it wasnt our time anyways so we called front desk they apologised and picked it up right away to deliver to the correct room. So when my daughters day came around for her card, nothing came. So the next day I ask and they will have to look for cards. The girls said she was not 100% sure as this was something done in the day and she might not be able to do it. Sadly they were not able to. No biggie.
Good
Every night from 6pm - 11pm you can have a cartoon picture drawn of you or one of your kids. I highly recommend budgetting for this. 35.00 for picture, cover and color. The pictures are really good and such a delightful suvenir. You are supposed to pick from some idea picture but we just told the ladies what animals she likes and she made a picture with my daughter and her favourite animals. She really loved it and 20 years from now it will still be cool!
Good
In colder weather they heated the pools! Need i say more.
Good
When we arrived we were greeted like something right out of a commercial. The manager came out and said Welcome to WaltDisneyWorld we are happy to have you. We were so impressed and felt like it was a magical way to start our holiday.
Bad but Good
Being in the Broadway building which is the farthest from the main building. Bad after a long day of walking.
Good for peace and quiet.
Bad when you want to take food back to your room.
Bad
Luggage assistance. I went to the front desk to get a luggage cart for the next day as we left at 4:55am and I did not want to have to walk down and get it in the morning. They sent me to luggae desk out front. They told me that someone would bring me the cart in the morning and told me to call with the exact time. They could not leave the cart with me. So back I went to my room. I called right away with the exact time and was told if I wanted a cart I had to go to the front desk and get it myself that they could not deliver. Ahhhh!!! I was a long ways away and already there. It is 10pm at night and I want to pack and go to bed. So I got a bit snippy and explained I had done that. She said they can not normally do that but she would send someone to our room with a cart at 4:10 am. Fine thanks I am happy. 4:15 no CART. So I call. I am told again sorry we wont deliver a cart. I explain my story again and sound even a little more snippy...grumble grumble... she says she will send someone else to assist us. We waited outside for a few minutes and then started to fumble our way with a mess of luggage. The assistance meets us shortly after we move. Not the best impression to leave me with HOWEVER this is not what our whole experience was like.
Good
Value unbeatable. Transportation to a from the air port, Disney Bus's and no cab fees to reach the parks, 2 pools, easy access to laundry, great evening ambiance, clean hotel rooms and surroundings, great gift shop, kid friendly environment, very reasonable service levels, great air conditioning, extra kid activities etc. All make for a hotel with options you just can't get anywhere else.

All the bad things in this list about could happen at any hotel you stay at. These were not due to All Star Music lack of effort or poor qualities. In fact they are quite the opposit but I would say again that it is a hotel geared to families and kids.

All Star Music was great those about to head there soon I am sure will have a wonderful time!

Awesome thread ! My next trip is so far away that it was fun to live vicariously through you. Can't wait to hear more.

We used Garden Grocer I think there are many posts on here for it. It was so easy and so nice.

Go online order your food in advance to get a booking time.
Order enough food for your stay.
They deliver the date you choose, if your not there they deliver to the front desk.
I had a message advising that our food had arrived to come to the front desk.
Went to the front desk they got it out of the back and gave me a cart to take it to my room.
They forgot my fridge items so back to front desk I went. Didn't bother me I was so happy that I did not have to cab to Publix that night we could swim instead.

It really was sooooo easy and great. Highly recommend them as many people do on here.

Do you have the contact info for the Garden Grocer?

Let me say it is hard to get back into the work grind when you want to be back in Florida!

Ok so we are missing Typhoon Lagoon and Animal...

Typhoon Lagoon

This water park was AWESOME! I really loved it this. The weather was perfect at 27c. We did not do Blizzard Beach so we cannot share a comparison but we sure can sell you on a waterpark cuz it was one of the best days we had.

First off we chose to make the water park our last day after some modifying of our itinerary. The weather earlier in the week was not that great and got better the day before we left Florida. So we were grateful to have that flexibility in our schedule. We also purchased our admission at the door. We liked going to this park the day before we left because our flight was at 4:55am. The park closes at 6pm so we would get back to the hotel early enough to pack and eat etc.

Here are our tips and experience:
We arrived at 10:20am and already we could not find a lounge chair vacant anywhere. You could find their short chiars but nothing you could lay on. At first I was bummed but after the day I realised I never spent any time at the chair so it did not matter. But at 10:20 it was already busy.
Shark Reef was cool. If you dont like cooler water or salt water it may not be for you. The fish were no where near you but you were able to view. The crowd for this all day was not bad. You waited for maybe one group to go.
Lazy River was awesome. Instead of walking anywhere we took a tube and floated to the other end. It was likely faster than walking, easier on the feet and way more fun! The best place to get a tube is by Shark Reef as when they start out the day they put all the tubes there. But for the most part you can easily get a tube anywhere.
My 8 year old enjoyed the wave pool so much we barely did any tube rides. The wave is powerful tho! Lost my hat, sunglasses and container that had my cash in it. Fortunetly if you are aware u can look and wont find it very far. The wave maker did go down for a bit and the crowd got a bit cranky and chanted..."BIG WAVES" "Big waves" we took this time to try some tubes.
Tube rides were fun but the lines were too long for too short a ride. The worst was the "Family Tube Ride". Everyone who got off called it the longest wait for the shortest ride.
I recommend wearing a bathing suit and only bringing what you need. It can be a very busy place and bothing with the change rooms and lockers is a waste of time. I had my camera in a bag and my cash around my kneck and a towel to cover my chairs.
This is the one place that I wished I had a cooler with my own food. FOr the most part on my holiday eating out was part of the fun. Eating out at Typhoon Lagoon was painful. They dont have a lot of places to go, even less tables to eat at and they had very inneficient serving practises. If you are gonna eat out there MAKE SURE you eat at 11am and have ice cream and snacks later. At 11am the tables are empty. It wasnt until later and until about 4 that it was impossible to eat.
The quietest time at the park was from 5pm - 6pm. We literally had to be chased out we were there till the end. But they do just that, chase you out. Once it is closed you have to get off the lazy river and make your way out. Oh and I did not find shade that easy to get. Not impossible but not easy either. Really suggest that you get there before opening if you want to ensure you get shade.
All in all highly recommend a water park it was a lot of fun!
