How can you take the following 4 numbers 17, 22, 3, 1 and make them equal 24? I had the ingenious idea of splitting the numbers into single fields and doing the following:

(7*3)+(2*2)-1/1 = 24

However, my DD in insistent that the numbers must be used as normal numbers 17, 22, 3 and 1. I'm thinking that since it is for a fun 'treat' rather than an assignment, the teacher might be 'thinking outside the box'.

Any thoughts?

I know - it's enough to drive you nuts!!! I told my daughter - think creatively!!! 'But mom - you HAVE to use these numbers!!!' I said, yeah you are - she didn't say you had to use them as whole numbers!! AGH. I have multiplied, divided, plussed and minused and my weird way is the only way we have come up with. (And of course mom knows NOTHING!!! :rolleyes1 )

when i was in middle school, we did these every friday (she said itw as for fun?!) --you had to somehow manipulate these numbers , as whole numbers, just adding, subtracting, dividing , and multiplying

i think i got it !!!!!!!

can you subtract and divid and add the numbers ??
if so then..

22 - 1 = 21

21 divided by 3 = 7

7 + 17 = 24

am I right ??? :confused3

No fighting!!!!

Thank you guys - we thought we had lost our minds......

But then again - i probably have - right Lou?????

You guys are freaking geniuses. Would someone give me their addy so DD #1 can go to their house so they can get some math help. I am VERY slow when it comes to math. I have helped several people through college with English and S.S. (World studies, European studies, Asian studies, etc help.) If you ask me my age, though, I'm not quite so sure. :rotfl2:
