A Long Drive With An 8 Month Old

But then you miss out on soo much. Even if gas goes way up as Canadians as soon as we cross the border we realize that we pay about 25% more on average vs Americans so it would have to go up a lot to deter me. Also hotels can be found dirt cheap if you go on Kayak or other similar sites. Vegas is always a good place to stop for a night or two or three and a room at $25 -$50 per night is easy to find. Up here we are used to paying $180 per night so once again it is a relatively cheap way to go. I am of course biased as I have flown to Disneyland and Disneyworld as a child and have driven Disneyland as a parent and prefer the memories of the epic drive. I have driven across Canada and I find the drive to LA to go by very quickly in comparison and the Interstates are great! It slows down a bit near Salt Lake City but otherwise you cruise the whole way. If you have the time loop around and come up the California Coast especially Highway #1 and make your own California Adventure. The scenery on Highway 1 is stunning. I am doing this drive in about 60 days and I can't wait to get driving! Likely in a couple of years we will drive to Disneyworld as this would be new territory for us and lots of new cities and sites to see along the way. Once you do a few of these road trips you will never want to be herded onto a plane again. We usually have minimum 20 days to do these trips so if you are in a rush it may not be practical. Whichever way you go 11 month old likely won't remember much either way. Plane ride might actually be more nauseating?

Personally I wouldn't drive, IMO once you factor in everything I don't think its worth it. I live in Edmonton and we've done the drive and it's not the same driving with a small child you can't just go straight through and make only a couple stops...
Also if my math is correct your still pregnant, no? I'm not sure I would be planning so far out I would at least wait until baby is here an then reevaluate.

Baby's ears will fare better on a drive I guess, as opposed to a flight. (Cabin pressure.) Good luck! :goodvibes I still think it will be very pricey if you factor in every penny. And far more stressful.... but that's just me, I hate being in a car for too long.

Hey there!

We are from Alberta, Canada and were planning on taking a weekend trip down to Disneyland in Feb. But with how expensive flights are, we are now considering driving.

The only thing about driving is that means we would have to be gone longer, and would probably end up taking our then 8 month old baby. Does anyone have any advice or tips on traveling long distances with a young child? We've done the drive before, just not with a child.

Thank you in advance!

I found that there are often seat sales...we got 3 round trip tickets for $200 each (including taxes etc.) from westjet. I figured out my gas mileage, food etc with help from sites like gasbuddy.com...I think you might be a little low on your driving costs.

Also, we have driven from New Westminster, BC, Canada to Anaheim, CA, and it is a long hard haul. Road trips are great though, but it is boring. Food you find on this route is at best fast food. :sad1:

We know both ways have their hardships but taking time off work, gas prices, food on the way, it factored out cheaper and easier on our family to fly.

Either way we hope you have a wonderful vacation! Disneyland is a super magical:wizard: place and we have been 5 times, and heading back next year!

If I can suggest a great place to stay for our family, we get the Entertainment book and book Hojo for a great affordable price and then bring an umbrella stroller for our little one to save her feet.:flower3:

Thank you for this! I have actually signed up for emails from Westjet to let me know when there are seat sales to LA. So hopefully we can catch a good deal. :goodvibes I think we are leaning towards flying this time around, just so we aren't gone as long. We've done the drive without a child, and it sure is a long one. Not sure we are up for it quite yet, as it's only been 7 months since our last trip.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Good luck with your decision. We drove 14 hrs when our son was about 6 mos old. He screamed the first hour and I thought we'd lose our minds. Then he settled down and was great for the rest of the trip.

On other trips, the first day was always the hardest. After that, the kids were tired enough -- especially after being in Disneyland! -- they'd sleep any time we were in the car. 8^)

How many of the people against driving have done this 20-30 hour (each way) drive? Just saying:rolleyes1

I have :). I went to college 2,000 miles away and drove LA to Michigan at least a half-dozen times, sometimes by myself, in two days. I've also driven LA to Chicago (30 hours) with a friend and gone straight through without stopping, twice. I'm no stranger to long-haul trips. The longest I've driven with the baby was 10 hours and I wouldn't do it again if I could avoid it.

And my son (age 2) has been on 10 different plane flights including LA to London and Frankfurt to Chicago, so I'm no stranger to flying with a baby either. With all of that experience, I still vote for flying.

Ear popping isn't a problem if you give the baby a bottle or pacifier at takeoff. If their ears do pop, it clears up in 10-15 minutes anyway.
