A little OT - Potty training question

We are getting ready to go to WDW next month and DD is starting to potty train. I know she will probably ask to use the restroom while we are there. Every now and then when we go to the mall and I have to use the restroom she wants to go too. I hate to say no, when we are encouraging her to use the potty. I just hate the thought of her trying to sit on a public toilet. Has anyone used a portable type toilet seat cover when their child was potty training? I have seen one at The Right Start online, but that is the only place I have found one. I am looking for something small that can fit in a diaper bag, but more solid than the toilet seat covers that can usually be found in a public restroom.....I want her to be able to sit down and not worry about falling in.

My DD is 2 1/2. She was fully trained about 2 months after her 2nd birthday, but will still not go on a toilet without her own toilet seat. We carry it with us everywhere. (restaurants, malls, everywhere)! We bought a portable one that folds, but it was very uncomfortable and she wouldn't use it. At first I thought it would be a big hassle to carry it around, but it really isn't that bad. We just keep it in our car, and it's there whenever we need it. I must say, I look at other people with kids my DD's age, and wonder where their toilet seat is. I'm pretty sure we're the only ones around who travel with one.

not sure about the seat, but take post it notes to cover the automatic sensor. I still do this for my 8 year old. The scare her.

I found some at Wal Mart a long time ago that are plastic or vinyl and disposable. I think they were hanging on the aisle where the TP is. They're in a small plastic bag and are small enough to fit in your purse or even pocket.

I just used the seat cover, had my dd's sit sideways and used post it notes to cover the sensor. A good handwashing to follow should cover it. You can also use the babycare stations if they are nearby and I find the restaurant restrooms a bit cleaner and smaller - but again only if they are nearby.

My kids are 10 and 8 but I did buy the right start seat insert thing oh so many years ago and it piched the "tousie" so neither kid would use it

If you really don't want your dd to hit the ladies room with you then just come up with a code to use with dh. Something like I am going to "freshen up" why not get DD an ice cream or take her to see the __________.

Unless of course dd comes through and becomes potty trained before the trip. In that case have fun on your tour of WDW restrooms, BTDT - and survived.

When we went last year our dd was almost 3 and had also just been potty trained about three months before the trip. When we went on the plane she wore a pull up as she was afraid of "those bathrooms". She did have to pee on the way down to FL very badly but wouldn't just 'let go' at her seat. We went to the bathroom and she wouldn't use the toilet, so I convinced her to pee in her pull up before she exploded and then we just changed into a fresh pull-up. I had made sure we 'practiced' at some public washrooms before we went to WDW so she was ok, but I still hate public ones with a passion.

When she was originally learning we tried one of those collapsable potty seats that was portable, but it was very flimsy and would bend when you sat on it so I was very afraid she'd pinch her butt! So I bought one of those cheap white ones that are solid and carried it in the side of my diaper bag in a big plastic baggie. It helped until she was ready to try without one.

She is still a little leary of those loud flushing toilets, but was fascinated with the ones that flush on their own at WDW!! Go figure ...

My only rule is 'don't touch the seat with your hands' ... I have her sit her hands on her legs. I know, I know ... paranoid mommy ... I just hate them though

DD was newly trained when we went on our first family trip to WDW. I bought a portable plastic seat made by Graco (I think). My daughter used it every time we went to a public restroom. It did not pinch and she was very comfortable using it.

I've also seen potty toppers at Toys R Us, but I've never bought them. They're made by the same company that makes the Table Toppers disposable place mats.

Thanks so much for all of the replies! When it comes to public restrooms I am a little paranoid....at least I think I am. The other day when I went at the mall dd was so intent on watching me as I "squat" on the toilet.....then when we got home she asked to use the potty and did the same thing! For a couple of days she would not sit on her potty...only imitate what I had done at the mall!! It was too funny!!

Anyway, we are having a tough time with the potty training. Wish us luck!!

We used the fold up Graco potty seat when dd was first training/trained. As long as you lift them up and place them on it carefully the fold won't pinch them. By the time we went to Disney (a year or so after she was trained) we had "graduated" to the potty topper pads. They are much thicker than the little paper thing they supply in restrooms. Also, the baby centers have small child size toilets for them to use, and I have found the baby centers to always be very clean. I would encourage potty breaks when you are near them.
We carried the fold up potty seat in a big ziplock bag in the diaper bag. It went everywhere with us!

Hi Cari,

We're off in 2 weeks & my little boy is showing all the signs of wanting to potty train, but I've chickened out & am waiting till we get back.

However, in addition to his potty, I also have a 'cushie traveller' which I ordered. It seems like it must be a US company as it's by a company called 'mommy's helper' (and their other variety is a cushie tushie - is a tushie a bottom?).

It advertises the product as 'no more pinched bottoms'. I think they have a website, but I can't see a price, & I ordered mine in the UK, so can't help there.

I had my son first, so when potty-training time came around for my daughter, I was stressed, too. Part of me didn't want her to train too early b/c of having to use those public toilets....boys were soooo much easier! She knows where every toilet is in DisneyWorld, too.

What we do is pack those small packets of antibacterial wipes, and I wipe down the potty for her--even ones w/o visible "messes." I guess that a small can of Lysol and a swipe would work, too. Follow-up with a good handwashing with soap (for both of you), and you'll be good to go.

(I'm still miffed that my husband has it so easy taking my son to potty.)
