So I am a little bummed but we might have to cancel our trip. My sons show horse was recently diagnosed with a degenerative meniscus and depending on the cost of the new show horse next year we might have to use our Disney money to pay for a new show horse. I mean it kind of sucks but the way I look at it Disney will always be there and we can just go in 2018.

Anyways my question is this...when we booked our Disney package we booked it with the Disney Vacation Account and thats how we put the $200 down. When Disney refunds the deposit will they deposit that back into my Disney vacation account? Then could I request a full refund from that account as well? Or will Disney refund me the deposit in another way? How does this work? I am not sure what we are doing yet but we have a few months to figure it out. I figure I can wait til at least January to make up my mind or maybe a little sooner then I would have some extra cash freed up for Christmas. My son has said to me he doesn't really care about Disney he just wants to be able to ride and show and doesn't want to wait until 2018 to be able to do that, lol. I totally get where he's coming from too...in the eyes of a 10 yr old 2018 is a lifetime away, LOL. I told him we would still go on a vacation somewhere but it would be a smaller trip somewhere closer to home. From the words of my 10yr old son, he would be just as happy going to Washington DC, LOL...He LOVED Washington when we went for a few days last year and he LOVED all the museums there as well, lol. Anyways just wondering what happens to my deposit if we do end up canceling the trip

Sorry about your son's show horse.

When it comes to refunds, Disney always returns he money to wherever it came from. So if you paid with a GC, it goes back on the same GC. If you paid with a CC, it goes back on the CC. And if you paid with the DVA, the money goes back in your DVA. If you request a refund from the DVA, the same thing will happen...money that came from a bank account will be returned to the same bank account, money that came from a CC goes back to the CC and if you funded the DVA using a GC, you can request a new GC or have the funds returned to the original GC if you still have it.

Aww...as a horse person myself, I totally get this. My show horses are all retired now, but even still, their upkeep and well-being are higher on the priority list than a vacation. And as you said, Disney will always be there. You can never get back a year out of the ring. Showing was my life growing up and really up until a few years ago. After doing it for almost 30 years, I finally got to the "been there, done that, want to spend money on something else now" phase of my life. But even still, I sometimes do miss it. At least I still have the means to retire my sweet boys. They worked their hearts out for me, and I will take care of them for the rest of their lives.
What kind of showing does your son do?

On the bright side Disney 2018 will have a lot more going on. Star Wars, the new Animal Kingdom might actual come together by then. Maybe the replacement for the Main St electrical parade will be up and running if Disney replaces it! I hope you are able to work out the DVA logistics and find your son a wonderful horse for his future shows!

Thanks for the kind words! Showing was my life growing up too, now I am on the side lines, lol. I totally get where my kid is coming from too...his horse is really his world and he wants to give it his full commitment. My son is only 10 but when he rides its really something to watch and I just can't in good faith and a clear head, spend on a trip when his whole life is crumbling down around him. He started out in the hunter ring and started over jumps too, but then had a really really bad experience with a trainer who tried to push his horse into something she wasn't. He has a little 15.2hh Quarter Horse that was originally trained for the western pleasure ring and the trainer was trying to make her go like some Warmblood hunter jumper horse. She just doesn't have the conformation for that. Anyways they only worked together for about 3 months, until I fired the trainer bc he totally broke my kids horse down physiologically. We had to pretty much give her off for 6 months. She was so ring sour it wasn't even funny. After the break we brought her back slowly and I let my kid just hack her on the trails and have fun with her again, no pressure riding. Then we slowly brought her back into the ring and my son decided he wanted to switch to western pleasure riding bc it was what his horse liked to do more than english. I mean I couldn't disagree with him bc he was right, it took him about 6 months to figure it out and perfect it but he learned how to ride western pleasure and I couldn't be more proud of him. Now he loves western though and I asked him now that we are getting a new horse if he was going to stick with western and he said he loved western and he wanted to stick with western and he doesn't want to ride anything else and he wants to do the AQHA circuit with his new horse and he has a lot of dreams for a little 10 year old, LOL...here are some pics of him...the first pic is a couple of years ago when he was I think 8 and riding English and the 2nd pic was from April of this year and it was his first western show. Both on the same mare that will now be retired to a trail horse, lol

I just wanted to say that your son looks so happy, and his horse is beautiful! Sorry for your troubles. You're right, Disney will be there. Good luck.

Wow! He looks great!
I'm very similar to you guys. I started out hunters and then went to eventing, and then got into AQHA and that's where I stayed. I never could quite make the switch to western pleasure, though I did dabble in it for all-around points since my horses were able to do it. Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation were my favorite classes. I would've loved to have jumped in AQHA too, but neither of my "big time" show horses cared for jumping.
I think it's so great that your son had the wisdom to want to do what his horse was best at. That's so great!
Have fun horse shopping! A competitive AQHA youth western pleasure horse. Hmmm.....I'll keep my eyes peeled! ;)

Thanks so much! I feel a lot better after talking to everyone on this board. I have to say I was feeling really disappointed and I just couldn't get excited about this new horse. We couldn't go to Disney this year Bc we needed to buy a new horse trailer and now we can't go next year bc of the new horse. Oh well what can you do. Although I feel like I am doing this all backwards lol, we bought the new custom trailer in February, then just this month we bought the 2500 truck to pull it (we use to pull with a SUV) and now we are buying the fancy horse to go in the fancy trailer, lol. It's definitely all backwards lol

I love seeing your pictures of your son and his horse. They are both beautiful and its great that they are both doing what they love. I rode and showed AQHA as a child and you can not beat the bond between a child/rider and their horse. I was the little 5 year old out there with the giant 16.2 hands horse! I only showed for a few years but I loved that horse for the next 30 years, we both literally grew up together. While it’s disappointing that you have to postpone your Disney trip, Disney will always be there and you will be making some great memories with your son while the time passes till your trip.

I too show horses, and also show AQHA, @GPC0321 ! Small world. I've shown HUS and Eq, currently waiting for my 2 yo to grow up a little more before we start showing him since he's a little immature.

@StirlingSilver83 , I think you have the right mindset. I've been riding since I was 7 and I'm still addicted. Horseback riding made such a huge impact on my life, especially through my teenage years. For so many of us it's not just a childhood sport to compete in, it's a way of life. I met my husband through horseback riding and am at the barn everyday. I just put down my first pony at the ripe old age of 31 and I owned him for 18 of those years. As much as I've loved Disney my whole life, I would have much rather had my parents keep me in horses like they did than take me on more vacations!

And I agree that waiting until 2018 for Disney might not be such a bad thing. DH and I had discussed going next year, but we would honestly rather wait a little longer and have more of the new lands open at Disney World when we do go.

By the way, is there anything to be done for your son's current horse? Haven't dealt with what you're referring to, but I didn't know if there were any treatments for it. Though I certainly understand having to put one out to pasture. I have a beautiful 11 year old standing in the field.

The vet said they can give her injections to keep her sound and take the pain away so my son can still ride her, but that they aren't 100% and they pay last 6 months but they may last 6 weeks. Basically her meniscus is degenerating so its just going to keep getting worse if he keeps riding and pushing her. The vet said she would be ok for like walking trail rides on solid footing, he doesn't think that would hurt her any, and my son is perfectly ok with that answer. He loves her and doesn't want to hurt her so if putting her into early retirement is what we have to do then he's ok with that. He's honestly taking the news better than I did when I found out my mare had EPM and we had to retire her, lol...Now we will have 2 retired horses that sit around and 2 horses that can work, lol. The good thing about this though is the vet said she could still be good for trail riding and light work, so when we get another horse my son and I can trailer out to the trails close to our barn and go trail riding. We could never do that before bc my current riding horse, that we got to replace my mare that had the EPM, first of all is real flighty outside of the ring, and second of all hates the trailer, LOL.

My husband is taking the news of owning 4 horses though better than expected, lol...he's a city boy and knows really nothing about horses, but he pays the bill...he doesn't even really want to be involved in this crazy horse search bc we live in NJ and I am showing him horses for sale that are located in MI and KY and NC, LOL...he's like whats wrong with NJ horses...I told him we live in the wrong state, horses in NJ cost about 20% more than any horses any where else in the world, lol. He told me he's not going on these long road trips to look at horses, just tell him who to write the check out to when we find what we want, lol. Wait until my kid gets really into showing the AQHA circuit and starts having shows in PA, NY, DE, and MD...he's just gonna shake his head, lol. Thats what my kid wants to do though, he wants to take his horse on long road trips and shows and stay over night. He's also in 4H and every year out county 4H has a 4H fair and all his 4H friends kept their horses in the horse tent this year and he was so curious about it bc we went to help them all set up and see everything and I could see his wheels turning, lol. At that point I should of figured out what I had started, lol

LOL! Good for your son, and nice of your husband! I have the one out to pasture and the 2 yo in training, but my mom has three that I help her take care of. We're not able to keep two in training right now for both DH and I have to one at the same time, but that's the goal eventually. We enjoy showing AQHA, it's all we do now!

Good for him for being involved in 4-H! DH and I actually met at 4-H camp when we were 12. We actually just got back on Sunday from volunteering at our state 4-H championship show where we manage the western division.

Good luck on your horse search!
