A little bummed about MH at SSR

I never even received such a letter. I think I'm going to be following up with a call to MS and verify my reservation. I will also be checking to see if there is an advance schedule for these closures, for some reason I doubt it , but worth a try anyway berfore I get all nervous about it.

Frankly I hope it won't be for more than a couple of hours, but like some one else said, "Welcome home" glad you cared enough about us to make the "investment" , but you can't use some of the facilities that you are entitled to as a member/guest. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Just my opinion.

Hmmm... I don't own at SSR, and have no plans in being at WDW for this "Magical Event" . With that said, I would be seriously ticked if I was an owner, staying at my home resort for the first time, and was shut out of my home resort feature pool during my first stay.

Maybe it's not logical, but I don't equate closing this pool for a private function to closing SAB. SAB was built by Disney for use by hotels completely owned and operated by Disney. When DVD built BCVs, they agreed to pay for rights to use the pool. It seems to me that the argument can be made that it is a Disney Resort pool, not a DVD/DVC pool. High Rock Springs was built at a site that is currently a completely DVD/DVC resort. If I had to hazard a guess, I would think that the cost of building and maintaining the pool is being completely paid for by the original points costs and MFs paid by those who have purchased interests in SSR. Also, when SAB has been closed during our stay, the option to pool hop to Luna Pool has always been available, with shuttle service (a golf cart!) if desired.

Someone argued semantics about whether you own or don't own. The bottom line is that the POS promises the pool as part of your ownership (they call it ownership, by the way). Unlike Spa Services, restaurant discounts, ticket discounts, etc..., use of the feature pool is guaranteed and can't be taken away. I wouldn't accept losing the feature pool and not being given another one to use during the time that my pool was unavailable.

ROFL... if I was staying at SSR during MH, and I was locked out of my home pool for a publicity event, I might be tempted to post some protest signs in my windows... maybe march my kids around the perimeter of the pool with sad faces and signs that say: "I'm not having a "Magical Moment" - Mom and Dad bought into SSR, and I can't even use the lousy pool during our visit"... it might turn into a very different PR Event than the one they have in mind! :p

No- There was no argument about whether you do or do not own--the comment was about WHAT you do or do not own. You do not own the resort. Disney owns the resort. You own a membership interest. This is a very important distinction...ask the OKW members who do not want a pool slide, and voted against a poolslide how much "ownership" control they had over the new OKW poolslide if you would like to see how owning a property differs from owning a membership interest in a "Club."

One of the reasons we booked during the opening is that when we purchased our guide said they usually do some special things during opening weeks of a new resort. No mention was made of having to pay a mortgage payment for your family to attend. We wanted to go , relax, and enjoy the ENTIRE resort.

Now I have a question- during the opening of the other resorts was it a madhouse with lots of foot traffic?

I would complain. Last year, we bought at BCV and stayed at OKW (since we used magical beginnings we sold our first year points back and were borrowing against this year).

My kids saw the SAB and their mouths dropped. I found a sales guy (in the model) and said: "Can you help - I just dropped 11K on this. I did not get lunch, I got no tickets, can you help me out: All I want is for my kids to spend 2 hours in that pool."

The salesman was generous enough to go out to the pool and get my kids 2 arm bands that allowed them to swim.

Maybe this strategy will help.

Good luck - we will be down the same week. I was hoping to take my kids to SSR to try the pool as well. Guess we may re-think that strategy.

Unfortunately, when you attend WDW during any type of special event, such as a grand opening, or special anniversary, such as the 25th anniversary of WDW, there are going to be closing and inconveniences. I am sure that if they are making the pool unavailable to those staying there for certain periods, it will be to get ready for the event, and during the time of the event. I'm sure that during that time, no one will be 'swimming' in the pool.

We had made reservations well in advance to attend the 25th anniversary. They were promising this great bash. Well, none of the plans were announced until very close to the event. I turned out that only 'invited guests' were allowed on Main Street for the re-dedication. Also, during that period, many parks were shut 'early' for special parties for those 'invited' guests. Yes, I was very disappointed in it. I also learned my lesson about being at "WDW" on the day of an event...I won't do it again.

If you have been going to WDW for a long time, you should realize by now that they often do not confirm or announce plans until the last minute. This is to allow themselves some room for schedule changes, etc.

While it is very exciting to be there during the grand opening, you must also understand that Disney needs to promote the facility and as a result, you may have a slight inconvenience. I think people read a lot more into a notice than was intended. It did not say that the pool would be closed for 3 entire days....only that it may be unavailable for some periods.

When Disney closes DVC resort ammentities strictly for their profit making ventures, inconvienced DVC resort members should be compensated in one form or another.

I think this really totally sums it all up.

Well, my DW and I are paying the $76,937 per ticket price to attend Member Homecoming, we're staying at SSR, our Home Resort, and WE just got this letter in the mail!

Sammie, I think in this case, the OP and related parties are within bounds on complaining on this one - not a good idea for DVC to close access to SSR theme pool at anytime but to link it to the MH event and then wrap that within the same message as c'mon buy tickets...that is really cheesie........

thanks

I was commenting on Cris' comments not about the situation.

That's what I was trying to say. DVC is using this week as a promotional week for SSR. Yes they said MH, but what we purchased tickets for is just one event for MH week. It's not like those that paid for MH will see anymore pool time than those that did not. Those of us that paid for MH will be affected also as guests of the resort during that time.

Yes they used the mailing to get one more plug out for the event, but the lunch on thursday is obviously not all they have planned that week.

I agree that pool hopping should be allowed during the periods of closure. Where, I don't know.

I agree. Obviously, the pool is going to be featured somehow during this event. It will highlighted as one more reason why DVC will be trying to convince you to do an add on! ;) Which, as I said before, is probably some evidence that the pool is, in fact, quite cool. (I can't wait to see it! I wish someone had some news!) So that's reason for us SSR folks to be happy! Even if we will lose a few hours of use during that week. Thankfully, I am arriving on the Sunday before MH, so I will just enjoy it before Member Homecoming. For others who will be there only for MH days, I am sure there will be some time when they can enjoy the pool -- but they should let us know when that will be so that folks can plan accordingly.

Agreed that a big part of MH will likely be the promotion of SSR and its benefits. (I'd expect tours of the spa, etc) That's just logical given the timing. It's a wonderful marketing opportunity for them.

Is the pool being closed specifically for MH or for something else like a VIP Party? Will there be higher ups at Disney/DVC there that week?

It just seems strange that the pool would close for MH. The event at MH indicated it would be a Founder's Day Celebration. Why couldn't people swim during this.

Has anyone got an official answer from DVC other that the letter?

SSR dedication is on the 27th?

Are there any more details on times for events during this dedication ceremony?

I agree it's not reasonable to close off such an integral part of a new resort when there are paying guests staying there (DVC members included of course). It's not like they are closing off an area of the Boardwalk and members must walk around. If they were going to do this, they should have planned it to occur prior to official opening, say the day before. I'm also betting that if enough people make a stink, they open it to guests at the resort but no PH. If they wanted to segregate the guests, I'm sure the pool area is large enough to do so with such a small percent of people staying compared to the end capacity. As a minimum, I'd say they should allow PH to SAB and icecream included.

Now if they had an Eisner Dunk Tank, I'd not only understand, but I'd approve! At $5 / throw, they'd stand to make a lot of $$$.;)

I had already made my comments about the situation at SSR.

Cris made a comment about "Sell if you are not happy with DVC."

The post of mine that you copied "one" comment from was entirely about what Cris said. Not sure how it could have been anymore clear than that.

When you take one comment out of the entire post you distort the total message and if you had not read all previous comments then no I guess it does not make much sense then.

So obviously if you are staying at SSR that week you will be affected by the pool outages.

Im sure they will be showcasing the resort that week and not just on the 27th.

All DVC's are sold out that week so that may be a factor in allowing pool hopping.

The letter did not state times, just as posted earlier.
