A lady was mean to my 4 year old today..

My BFF's mother used to handle kids looking for attention in a fast-food restaurant in a unique way. She'd wait until the mother was distracted, then open her mouth (filled with half-chewed food) wide in the kid's direction.

As teenagers, we thought it was pretty funny when the kid would turn to his mother to ******* BFF's mom was from London. When the mom looked up, she would be nibbling at her sandwich, pinkies up and reply in her veddy prahper voice "What is he going on about? I can't understand him." lol

At least the old biddy in the OP didn't take a swat at the kid. Remember that, to some older people, children are to be seen and not heard. She was not encouraging him to speak to strangers. Bet he'll think twice about "flicking" a stranger's purse next time. I think this thread is much ado about nothing.

To the op.....that old lady was just being grouchy. People like that are irritating. It sounds like you handled it appropriately. Saying anything back to the ole witch would have only made for a worse situation, and you did correct your ds, and tell him that it's rude to touch other people's things. Really wasn't much more you could do.

Where was the grouchy part? The kid might have been in a grouchy mood, it doesn't sound like he was minding his Mom.

But the nice tolerant lady in the story, certainly doesn't deserve to be called a witch!

In my last post I did NOT state that the phrase was vulgar, I stated that I would reserve my use of the phrase as a response to a more vulgar question (such as "what kind of underwear do you have on?"). More importantly, though, I conceded that (quoting myself) "it probably means different things to different people." Without getting out my dictionary, I just mentioned that it sounds pretty nasty to me.

Again where is the part that sounds "nasty". And well, the other part doesn't work I can see you are from Pennsylvania, so you would be subject to the same cultural influences as me.

There is no mocking in the $1,000,000 comment. But I would genuinely love to know what you want out of a stranger. I read it and sounds like she was as brief as possible, and let the Mom take care of the situation. She only made a brief comment when the problem persisted and the child addressed her specifically. She sounds pretty nice actually! Certainly not a grump, or a witch, and no reason to think she was having a bad day.

Has nothing to do with this story, but the ONE AND ONLY time I actually ate inside a McD was with my DH. This rather large man sat at the table next to us, and right in the middle of our meal, lets out the biggest, most disgusting fart I'd ever heard in my life!!!!
I swear the seat fibrated!!!! DH and I looked at each other for a moment, and then he just gets up hysterically laughing, and goes and sits at another table, leaving me there to fend for myself. There were a lot of other people in there - now they were all looking at me!!!! I'll never eat inside another fast food joint again!!! LOL

I can honestly tell you that in my 44 years on this planet, I cannot remember a single incident of encountering a farter in McD's, Wendy's, or the like. My father in law, on the other hand, once crop dusted some unfortunate diners on his way out of a fairly nice family restaurant.

You had the misfortune to be seated beside a very rude individual. I am willing to wager he would have been just as rude no matter where he happened to be eating lunch.

Me and DS went shopping today and went to McD's for lunch. We sit down and an old lady sits next to us. We're eating and I notice he gave the lady's handbag a flick with his finger. I told him how its rude to touch people's things. I know he's expecting this old lady to smile at him or something.HE then taps on the bench next to his leg. The lady says to him rather meanly can you stop that it's annoying. Now my DS asks her what her name is. She tells him it's none of your business. Poor DS looked so shocked. I was thinking not so nice things but didn't say anything. After he finished I took him to the pet store where the poor barking puppies took his mind off the rudeness.

She could have told him to say sorry, and attempted to occupy his attention. That's obviously what he was seeking.

To be fair I wouldn't be at McDonald's though so the interaction would take place at a different establishment, maybe WalMart. But then I'd have to say it loudly while kids are screaming and setting off explosives which it seems is a problem at WalMarts around the country.

Sorry, although the woman was curt, to be fair there are times where I could get a little bothered by some people. Maybe the woman had a bad day and wasn't in the mood to be entertained by some kid. She shouldn't have said "Mind your own business" but maybe found a little bit more of a polite way to be left alone. Also, honestly, when sitting in a fast food area, the last thing I want to do is talk to some kid or have s/he touch my things. I may sound like a curmudgeon but I can understand that maybe the old lady was having a bad day and didnt mean to come off mean but not everyone wants to talk to s atranger, kid, adult or whatever.

But that would have furthered the interaction between the woman and the child. The woman didn't want to engage in conversation with the child. Had she told him her name and asked him his would have kept talking to her. She wasn't there to entertain this child.
