A January Engagement Celebration and first time dining report! Updated 2/10

For our first full day we had lunch at Via Napoli after our Kona breakfast. I was so excited to try VN. I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks in Italy when I was younger, so I could not wait to try this supposedly authentic Italian pizza.

First things first, VN was packed. Don and I had almost no trouble getting into any of our ressies up to an hour and a half early. I think it is because we are just a pair, and most people trying to get tables are 3+. But we ate lunch around 2 and VN was completely full.

The restaurant is nice and open. The only thing that was strange to me is that they have these big stations in the middle of the restaurant. Stations where the waiters can get the aqua frescas and place dirty dishes. This led to a lot of people watching the waiters standing around. It was just a little strange.

Overall I loved this restaurant. I could eat the pizza any day of my life. On the other hand, if you are a Dominos or Pizza Hut lover - this pizza is probably not for you. Don was not a fan. He was confused why there was so much sauce and so little cheese.

We decided to go light on lunch this day. We split this tomato and mozzarella salad. I wish there had been more as the mozzarella was extremely fresh and so soft in texture. The tomatoes were also fresh and crisp.

We also shared this salami and provolone. Although I have to correct them - there is no way this was provolone cheese. It was a hard aged cheese. Very pungent and strong. But I have had aged provolone and this was not even remotely similar. The in-house made salami was delicious. I wanted a whole stick of it to go. For $7, I though that 4 large chunks of cheese and 4 slices of salami was not too badly priced.

Sorry, we ate some of this before I took the picture. This is the pepperoni individual pizza. It was $18, or $9 per person. It was delicious. The crust was crispy with the light char from the brick oven. The crust also had that great chewiness and AMAZING flavor by itself. The sauce was just pure heaven. Basically sweet tomatoes with nothing to ruin them. The mozzerella was fresh and light. The in-house made pepperoni was slightly spicy. I will just have to ear here by myself without Don!

NOTE about pizza sizes: I have to say I am a little confused as to pizza sizes at VN. They have this individual pizza, which was too small for us to share (I only ate 1 piece so he could eat the other 3). They have the large pizza, which the table next to us had. We would have had so much left over for 2 people if we had ate that pizza...think slightly larger than a standard large pizza. Then they also have some ginormous pizza. There just didn't seem to be anything for the two of us to share, pizza-wise.

We had to head over to MK between lunch and dinner so Don could get this float:

I was very sad when he came back with this because I love to share his Dole Whips...but this was a nasty orange one...yucky...I missed out on the pineapple goodness!

Also we needed a spin on the Peoplemover...one of our favorites...mainly because it is so relaxing! :thumbsup2

Just caught up with your reviews which are wonderful :goodvibes

Congratulations on your engagement. It must be so exciting to plan a WDW Wedding :yay:

Congratulations on your engagement. It must be so exciting to plan a WDW Wedding :yay:

Thank you! It has been so much fun thus far. And it gives us an excuse to go on many "wedding planning" trips!

But I am very jealous of your Disneyland Paris trip. I went once in high school and it was fabulous. I hope you have so much fun :yay:

congratulations, shame about the salad at LTT - I have fond memories of it a few years ago with a nice strawberry dressing. Kona looks great.

I have to admit that I was nervous to try San Angel Inn. The reviews are so all over the place that I didn't know what to expect. But we love Mexican food, and we love the ride as it floats by the volcano, so we had to try the restaurant sooner or later.

I LOVED THIS PLACE! I enjoyed every little morsel of food I put in my mouth, and my only regret is that my stomach was not large enough to finish my main dish and then start on the rest of Dons. The cast member who was our waitress was lovely.

We started off with chips and salsa. I have to say that this was the only slight downfall of the meal. The chips were great...freshly fried and just salty enough. The salsa was not terrible, but it was not amazing. It had that in between texture...not the tomato water you sometimes get, but there were also no chunks of anything. The problem was that it was very spicy (which we LOVED) but had almost no other flavor than that. I still gobbled them up, but it was weird to have a spicy salsa that had no other flavor.

We tried two appetizers. My appetizer ended up being probably the best thing I ate the whole trip. It was called tostadas de jaiba...and it was crab, onion, cilantro, lime, tomatoes, and mayo on fried corn tortillas. The crab was wonderfully fresh. There was a nice herb salad on top (more than just cilantro). There was great flavor coming in from all directions, and the wonderful crisp of the corn tortilla. It was amazingly refreshing, and I wish I had ordered 5 orders and ate them all night long like a little tostada piggy.

Don tried another appetizer. He had the tacos de chorizo con papa. Make no mistake...these are not your regular tacos. But they were insanely flavorful. Little pieces of potatoes and delicious chorizo (think chorizo hash) with a mayo sauce, onions, amazing fresh Mexican cheese, and a great salsa verde on flour tortillas. I am not ashamed to say I ate all three of my crabbies guys and chowed down on his other chorizo taco since I raved about my bite of his first taco.

For the entree I tried the chicken dish. I would gladly eat this every day of my life. Some people have called this dish bland, but they must have had another chef because this had so much flavor. It was poblano rice and a HUGE chicken breast with a cream sauce containing peppers and onions. (pollo a la rajas was its name) I wish we had a fridge at the hotel because I wanted to take the rest home. The only complaint was that the poblano rice had some random undercooked pieces of rice, but it was no biggie. If you like cream sauces, you need to try this. Notice how in the picture the chicken breast covers the ENTIRE plate.

Don tried the ribeye tacos on flour tortillas, hold the avocado (boring I know...who doesn't love avocado!) and add cheese. The ribeye was cooked well and in a great chipotle sauce. He was confused as to why it didn't look like Taco Bell, but even Mr. Picky :lovestruc admitted the tacos were good.

All in all, if you haven't been you must give San Angel a try. I wasn't expecting much but the levels of flavors in the unique Mexican dishes were out of this world! If we didn't like to switch it up every trip I would have us booked again for our April trip.

Looks like you really enjoyed SA

It gets such mixed reviews so it's great to see such a positive one

To be fair, the dressing was delicious. But I just am not a fan of wilted salads. I like the crisp of a salad the most. :)

I was so nervous eating there because of the reviews. But we were blown away. Hopefully it's not one of those places that are hit or miss depending on the day because we hope to eat at SA often in the future. Definitely try it if you haven't.

Congrats!!! I'm along for the ride!

Thanks, and welcome!

The next day we headed to Kouzzina for breakfast. Don is not a fan of Greek food, so this was my way of getting to Kouzzina to eat. It worked out well because I got Kouzzina and he got breakfast. A win-win!

First of all, the restaurant is beautiful. Very open and airy. We had a table by the window, so we got to look out and people watch the boardwalk. There is also a large open kitchen so you can see the chefs work. I am always a fan of being able to watch chefs work their magic.

We started with the pastry sample for an "appetizer." I couldn't resist. I have a major sweet tooth, and plus I knew I was starting Atkins as soon as I got back and I was trying to store up carbs like a camel. Which btw did not work...apparently you can't store carbs like that. :lmao: I don't know if they switch the pastries, but we got: two giant slices of coffee cake with a light chocolate touch (that's how it was described), a citrus bun (the one with the frosting glaze), a blueberry muffin, and a croissant. All were extraordinary. We polished this off with ease.

IMG_0063.jpg

I chose the feta, tomato, and spinach scramble with paper bacon again :sad2: and amazing breakfast potatoes that had a very thick flavorful seasoning on them. It also came with a croissant, which was a surprise. The eggs were lightly scrambled and still a little wet, which is how I love them. :lovestruc

IMG_0064.jpg

Don had the largest pancake I have ever seen. It was blueberry orange granola. The pancake was actually a little thin in terms of pancakes, but very light in texture. There were tons of blueberries and it actually tasted like orange! The granola was throughout the batter and on top. Don choose paper bacon as his meat.

Kouzzina is a must do if you haven't been. People next to us had waffles, and I was ready to ask if I could join their family because the waffles looked amazing.

Great reviews...I winder if it's possible to get TOnga Toast without the bananas? I know, I know, but I HATE them but want so much to try that breakfast...

Kouzzina looks wonderful, great idea to head there for breakfast

Be great to do on an Epcot day :goodvibes

You should definitely ask if they could do that! Because the best part of the meal was the cinnamon-sugary-ness, and not the banana (but the banana was still good). There is not much banana though, so I would suggest giving it a try if you could tolerate a little bit of the fruit.

It was a lovely quiet break from the morning. We went to HS EMH mainly just to get Toy Story fastpasses, then we headed over to breakfast. We continued over to Epcot for the day, and just popped back to HS for Toy Story Mania. It was a great "transition" breakfast! :)

Congratulations! Great report so far! I know what you mean by RAIN, we were at IOA on Jan. 17th and got completely soaked :scared1:

I love French food. I also have found memories of eating at Bistro de Paris many times as a child. My dad loved the restaurant, and we ate there every trip. It was where I first fell in love with escargot...seriously. Give them a try! Don't think of what they are if you do try or you'll never get over it. My dad told me they were steak...and apparently I believed him!

This was the second time Don and I have tried Chefs de France. I have also been a few times in recent years. I think this might be our last visit. The menu is just all over the place in consistency. We had all our courses come out so quickly, you know they are not making the food to order. When you place your order and your apps are our in less than 5 minutes, it is never a good sign.

We both had the prix (price, if you're Don :)) fixe menu. I started with the lobster bisque. This was the highlight of my meal. It was piping hot, despite only coming out minutes after our waiter disappeared. It does taste a little like supped up cambell's tomato soup...but it is still rich and creamy.

IMG_0087.jpg

HUGE chunks of lobster.

IMG_0090.jpg

Don had the french onion soup...weird for a guy who hates most things onion. But it was lovely. I had a taste, and the flavor was well developed. It also had a ton of cheese, which is a must for french onion soup. (Sorry about the fists in the picture lol)

IMG_0088.jpg

Remy came for a visit! Well, mainly he visited the kids at the next table...but the cast member doing exchanges with him was so vibrant and interactic! IT was a female, and she was much better than the male cast member taking him around last year.

IMG_0089.jpg

I had the croque madame for my meal. I am not sure why I got this since I hate swiss cheese. I do have to say that the ham in the sandwich was the best ham I have ever had in my life. But again, the sandwich was definitely pre-prepared since the bread was very hard and slightly stale, and it was cold overall. The salad, on the other hand, was heaven. Great balsamic! And I did end up ripping the Parmesan crust off the top of the sandwich...it was amazing.

IMG_0091.jpg

Don had the gruyere mac n cheese! This had some highs and lows. There was a good amount of sauce and cheese, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. But I look over and see that Don is slowly eating the dish and kind of staring at the plate as he goes. That is because there was SOOOOO much nutmeg in the sauce it was insane. I mean, the sauce tasted sweet. It was good, but someone must have went to shake a dash in and had the whole top fall off the nutmeg jar. Imagine pumpkin pie crossed with mac n cheese, and that was almost where we were.

IMG_0092.jpg

Desserts were horrible. I hate to say this because I love Disney dining, and always give them the benefit of the doubt since the restaurants are so busy and have to serve the masses. The icing on my chocolate cake was delicious, but the cake tasted like nothing at all.

IMG_0093.jpg

The profiteroles were worse. They were hard as a rock. Don tried to stumble through one, but he couldn't even cut it with a fork and knife. We've had these before, and they were not as hard. It could have just been an off day.

IMG_0094.jpg

Overall, I love this restaurant for its ambiance. The menu is just hit or miss. We've had good luck on apps, and salads...but some major misses on the entrees. And they need a dessert re-vamp because desserts should be the best part of a French meal...and especially they should at least taste good when they come out looking so pretty! We've put Chefs de France on the back-burner for a while, but we'll be back to try again in the future. We're always up for a second...well, third...chance! :rotfl:

Glad to see you enjoyed the Kouzzina breakfast. The pancake and waffles are my new favorites(I order the chicken sausage). Planning to go twice when we return in May. Thanks for the review and pics.

Great review and pictures!

I think it was you who sat next to us that day at Chefs. I remember wondering if the people next to us were DISers because of the food picture taking. Were you seated by the window? We were in the corner with 2 girls. There was a table next to us with kids too.
Either way, I am enjoying your review!:)

I think that probably was us. We were in the side room by the window that was facing the perfume shop. Did you see me tearing my sandwich apart to eat the ham? Or just scraping the icing off my cake? :rotfl2: Almost all the tables around us had kids because I remember seeing so many run up to view Remy, who was right behind Don when she pulled up the cart. I hope that you enjoyed your meal better than us! :goodvibes
