A "Hopefully" Not So Scary WDW Sibling Reunion - MNSSHP 2011 (Update 9/11 with pics)

Oh Dear Brother-in-Law, I'm happy you have decided to come over to the dark side! :cool1:

:lmao:

I know, it has been! I haven't been on the DIS too much the past few months...just busy with the girls and LIFE! Also, we were very lucky to take a few trips to WDW, but now we don't have any plans (yet) for the next trip so I'm kinda suffering withdrawls :guilty: and that always brings me here!

I didn't write about our Halloween trip but it was AWESOME! Of course, it was with a bunch of people (family and great friends) and we also stayed at Pop. It was our first time doing MNSSHP and I'd love to go back! I know there's stuff we didn't do/see but that's what happens sometimes when you're in a group, it's kind of a trade-off. :upsidedow Also, it was actually Halloween night so it was sold-out and packed! In fact, some of the people that went with us had decided to go kind-of last minute and they had to buy tickets for another party night. Since it was still Halloween weekend it was still kind of full for them, but I know people have gone on other nights and it's not so packed, so you guys should be good. My favorite part, by far, was the parade!! It is worth it just for that! It was our first time doing F&W, too, but we had stayed an extra night to do that and everyone we had been with had gone home by then so that's something else I definitely want to do again and that, I DO believe, would be more fun with a group. :thumbsup2

How cool that your DH and DBIL are BFF's! You guys must all have so much fun together!! Your brother as Flynn Ryder is hilarious! We love that movie, too! We just got it in May and the girls still watch it everynight.

The countdown calendars are so cute - yayyyy for double digits!!! :woohoo:

Oh, and hi Drumteacher!

Yeah - funny how those two (DS & DBIL) came to be a couple. It is totally great for us to have them so close.

Sub'ing!!! :goodvibes

I love your PTR and your family is hilarious! Found another similarity... sibling closeness. Only I'm your 'DB' in my family as I have 3 brothers, no sisters. I think that was in the plan - allows my to tolerate my DH's antics from time to time! :thumbsup2

Can't wait to read more! Wow! Double digits... We are down to 168 days... that is way better than when we started in the 300's though! Dancing banana for your sis!

Wow! 3 brothers, huh? One is all I can handle :lmao: I bet that makes for interesting family gatherings...:goodvibes

Thanks for subbing!

Awww your DH's first post! :goodvibes

Yay!

Up next, TAKE A STEP INTO MY TIME MACHINE...

1989 was the last time my brother, sister, and I have been to WDW together. I thought it would be funny to take a look back at what WDW and WE looked like back then.

Here are some mostly extinct attractions that I found pictures of. Try to name them.

1. Ok this one is not extinct but the view of it surely is.

MGMnohat0001.jpg

2. This one is extinct at WDW but has been refurbed at DL.

20000leagues0001.jpg

and an extra from the same ride

Diver0001.jpg

3. I really like this next one. The show isn't around anymore but the building is used a little differently.

DiamondHorshoe0001.jpg

4. I think I know what this one is but I'm not 100%. I'll see if anyone guesses the same answer.

FoodRocks0001.jpg

5. I'll have to take your guesses on this one. It looks fun but I don't remember it.

Donaldsbday0001.jpg

The funny ones are still to come and they're not so much funny as in fun. They're mostly funny because we are 22 years older and don't dress like that nor look like that anymore.

I will try my best to get a group shot of my brother, sister, and I this weekend to post a comparison but I'm too anxious to wait til then to post these. :rotfl:

Family shot in front of Hollywood Studios - MGM at the time.

Us kids in front of MK - not sure why my brother is hiding so close to me but he totally reminds me of my son in this pic. My sister is posing as usual :rotfl2:

In front of the fountain in Italy (Epcot) - I will try to replicate this one when we go back.

This one I'm just posting for fun. It's my dad and my brother. Do you SEE the size of that camcorder? :lmao:

Too bad we can't replicate this one since we are going for Halloween and not Christmas - notice Karly posing again

and 5 years later, me and my husband, same place, on our Disneymoon. Honey, don't kill me. Mullets were all the rage back then! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Love the flashback pictures!

The one with the fruits and veggies that you want us to guess? Totally the Kitchen Kabaret. I have video of that show. :lmao:

Oh the pictures are hilarious. The hairstyles, the rolled up jeans, the hair scrunchies... and your DH's mullet... WHOA! :thumbsup2

On the pictures... I think the first on is the Chinese theater in MGM and then the next two were 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea... was the third one a show where now Muppets 3D is shown at MGM? I didn't know the vegetable one but the last one... if I remember right... somewhere in the late 80's, Disney was celebrating a birthday... I'm thinking it was actually Mickey's Birthday. I was there in 88 and 89 and I just remember taking a lot of pictures of Birthday stuff! :goodvibes

Those flashback pics are awesome! Doesn't everybody have pictures in front of the railroad with rolled up jeans, scrunched up socks and reeboks (or keds)?? :rotfl2:

I remember those HUGE camcorders - my dad had one! They were so big you had to rest them on your shoulder while recording! :rotfl:

Thanks for sharing (though I'm not sure your DH feels the same way :lmao: ). It'll be cool to see the comparison pictures.

I was going to say the same thing about that picture of the fruits and veggies - Kitchen Kabaret! I used to really like that show. One of the cd's that we have has the music from it.

Omg! I'm from Thibodaux and my dates are the exact same as yours!
We almost have the same plans! Here's ours:
Depart new Orleans 9:05 am arrive Orlando 11:45am 10/7/11
MK, crystal palace 6:10pm
AK 10/8 8:05 tusker house
HS 10/9 4pm Mama Melrose F! Dinner package
Epcot 10/10 6p les chefs
10/11 sleep in, MNSSHP
10/12 DTD trex at noon 5:55pm fly home arrive 6:35pm :(

I am taking my son out of school on the Wednesday. Are u off all those days or are u taking your kids out?

No hurricanes! No hurricanes!!!

Joining in!

I really liked Diamond Horseshoe Revue - I think I have it on a VHS tape somewhere ... I remember the music from Kitchen Kaberet but the show not so much, and I will never forget Mickey's Birthdayland. If I remember correctly, you could only access it by the railroad (or at least my sister would only let us get there using the train); we must have seen that show a dozen times during our vacation!

Gotta love the tight rolled jeans!

:welcome: I think we have LOTS of bayou cajuns here on the Disboards. What is it with this area and loving Disney??? I guess I'm living in the right area! :thumbsup2 We work in the school system so we have off Friday, Monday, Tuesday of Columbus Day weekend. We are taking off the Wednesday and Thursday AFTER the fall break. We'll all go back on Friday. I think we can make it through one day of work and then recouperate from the trip.

I plan to make a possible ADR update later tonight. We are prepping for having my family over tomorrow. Our mom's bday is July 5 so we celebrate on the 4th with BBQ and cake! I am planning on taking that comparison picture tomorrow if I can hold my brother down. :rotfl:

Usually when we go to WDW, we get the regular dining plan. This year we played with numbers a lot because DD will be considered an adult. I thought for sure that we would lose money by going with the dining plan. Being the OCD planner that I am, I used the menus from wdwinfo.com to plan out where we would eat in which park and what we would probably eat if we ate there. I also added a little here and there for snacks and drinks. There are certain snacks I MUST have while at Disney. 2 years in between eating these snacks is way too long! My figures came out to be a small amount of savings. Could we skimp and save money....sure! But do we really want to skimp on a Disney trip? And then there's the issue of going during Food & Wine festival. MMMMMMmmmmm. I can't be sure of how many things we are going to want to sample. One thing we love about the dining plan is having most our food paid for ahead of time. Its so much easier to keep track of dining credits as opposed to how much money do we have left to eat off of.

After pretty much deciding to go with the regular dining plan, I started thinking about the Quick Service Dining Plan. This is such a short trip, and I didn't want to be tied down to a lot of table service ADR's. Also would we have enough snack credits if we didn't plan to eat "meals" at Epcot because of F&W? The QSDP gives everyone 2 snack credits a day instead of one. I adjusted my menus and numbers. I also took into account that we would be eating a couple of table service meals with my sister out of pocket. I concluded that we would still save about $100 from the regular dining plan, and we would spend about the same amount if we paid out of pocket IF I included enough snacks and drinks. Knowing all of that, we decided it would be soooo much easier to have our food paid for ahead of time AND count dining credits instead of money. We tend to over-think and skimp when we use "real" money (not credits). In addition, the QSDP gives everyone a refillable mug which values at $12 each. That's $48 for us. Any "real" money we spend at Disney will be for souvenirs. :thumbsup2

My sister and brother will be paying OOP for their meals because that's what works best for them. I think every family needs to examine what their dining preferences are and then do the math....literally. It was so nice to use the menus available and see what meals at WDW actually cost and then compare it to what you would pay on the dining plan.

Here are our plans for dining in WDW: Keep in mind a LOT of them are tentative because they will be counter services and will depend on where we end up when we get hungry. :) Thanks to my sister for getting up early and making our ADR's on the first day we were able to make them!

Friday, Oct. 7 - MNSSHP @ Magic Kingdom
Dinner - Probably Columbia Harbour House (DS & DBIL's traditional 1st meal at MK) This is one of our family's favorite restaurants also. We always eat here while at MK.

Saturday, Oct. 8 - Animal Kingdom
Breakfast - something quick in room OR Pop Food Court
Lunch - Yak & Yeti counter service (I'm dying to try this!) We will probably grab pizzas at Pizzafari for the kids and any other picky eaters. ;)
Dinner - Flame Tree BBQ - we eat here every trip :thumbsup2

Sunday, Oct. 9 - MK
Breakfast - Crystal Palace 8:25 - Can't wait to see the MK before the crowds arrive! Worth getting up for an early ADR. We actually had an 8:05 but had to change it when DB added to the trip. Again, worth it for him to be able to come and we still get to get in before the crowds.
Lunch - Pecos Bills (another favorite) OR if it is open....Tortuga Tavern formally known as Pirate el Perico. I've never eaten there but always wanted to.
Dinner - Probably Cosmic Rays or wherever we end up.

Monday, Oct. 10 - Epcot
Breakfast - quick in hotel or food court
Lunch - Food & Wine
Dinner - Food & Wine

** I cannot WAIT for the Food & Wine list to come out!!!! I saw a few new areas that are coming but I want to see the WHOLE list because I NEED to plan!!! Haha! And seriously I have to plan because DS has a peanut allergy. Disney takes great care of us but it also takes us to plan for it as well.

Tuesday, Oct. 11 - Hollywood Studios
Breakfast - quick in hotel or food court
Lunch - Sci-Fi Drive In @ 1:25pm The kids LOVE this one!
Dinner - whatever....I'm not impressed with DHS counter service restaurants.

Wednesday, Oct. 12
Who knows....we are leaving after lunch so it'll depend on where we want to spend our last day.

Hey...Stop where you are, everyone! There seems to be alot of smack talk about mullets on here recently! It wasn't my fault -- it's a rule that when you're in a rock band that you should have an outdated hairstyle! :rockband: So I HAD to have one. :confused3

In fact, I had MY mullet way before the King ever came around. Who's that, you ask? Well, noneother than the Mickey Mouse of the mullets ...

That's right, Billy Ray Cyrus
-- "We weren't worthy of your mullet greatness! Only you would understand us, Billy! Only you can properly justify the reason for a two way hair style: Business in the front, and Party in the back!"

Ahh, the years of my mullet greatness never cease to haunt me in my adult life!!!
I can remember it like it was only 20 yrs ago -- spending about 20 minutes a day blowdry styling my hair with a round brush... those were the good ol' days!!

Happy 4th of July to everyone!!!

We all got together today to celebrate the 4th and our mom's birthday and had some Disney fun. As promised, we took a comparison picture for you guys.

First....1989

And 2011

IMG_2480.jpg

Here is a group shot of everyone going on the trip. We ALMOST had enough Mickey ears. I'm glad I ended up with one decent picture. It can be a challenge to get a straight picture with this group.

IMG_2484.jpg

We also talked about what attractions we didn't want to miss in the parks as well as a few we could live without. Luckily, we agree on most everything. HOPEFULLY that will still be the case in October. :)

As I mentioned earlier, tomorrow is our mom's birthday. We tried to get ALL the grandkids to run up to her and take a quick picture. As usual, we didn't have a lot of luck with stopping the babies long enough to say cheese. My poor mom was glad when we let the kids run off again.

Yay!!!!!!!! It is going to be soooo much fun!!!! You know we're going to be taking funny pics while we're there. You should check out this thread I found today. Funny pics...good ideas.....

:rotfl2: Thanks for sharing the b4 and after photos of the siblings! (I should dig out my photos from back then; I had the big poofy bang thing going on too!)

My sister and I attempted to get some pics of my kids and her little one yesterday in matching July 4th shirts; I think I took about 40 shots and maybe have 2 semi-decent ones. Photography + kids = :scared1:

I had to join in on the thread, I am Savanah'sMom's DH and also the last adult in the group to join the DIS board although have been a lurker for years. This trip is going to be a cheap trip for us and has been fun to see what discounts we can get where and how. We had a room only pin code, saved us something like $150. We used under cover for the tickets and saved about $100 bucks on ticket prices. We've been saving our reward points which will cover the entire room cost and party tickets with probably about $350 extra to start spending on food. This will make splurging on food, snacks, and souvenirs easy easy.:cool1:
This will be our first drive to Disney as a family (about 12) hours according to GPS so it will be nice to break it up in 2 days with an 8 and 2 yr old. I think it will work well leaving in the afternoon as we are.
Today I looked at a calender which showed all the months in a year on one sheet. Wow, October looks close to todays date when I look at it that way :goodvibes
Have a magical day :)

We had a great time making fun of those old photos. My sister even posted them on Facebook. The comments on there were quite hilarious! :rotfl2:

I never realized just how hard it was to get good pictures of a group of kids! We've been trying for the last few get togethers to get a decent picture. Someone is either crying, running, or being silly.
