a great day at Augusta

Phil had an amazing weekend of golf...what he did yesterday was just flat out impressive...if he had let it slip through his fingers today it would have been a downer....I must admit though I was kind of rooting for Tiger to pull it out all his personal issues aside I love watching that guy play when he is on his game..... :goodvibes

It was a great day at Augusta. :goodvibes I've been a Lefty fan for a long time, I loved watching him today and on Saturday. Back to back Eagles. What a thrill. :thumbsup2 If it couldn't have been Phil, I was rooting for Freddie, he did great, wish he would have finished a little higher, that double bogey was a heartbreaker. All in all though, great day, great win. There's nothing like the Masters.

It couldn't have been scripted any better. I hope he can just ride the momentum through to a US Open win.

Thank you Phil for what you bring to golf. Everyone is very proud of you.
I did not miss a minute of your great win

John

Phil Mickleson is a great player and appears to be the genuine article. I've seen him play in person at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH. He goes out of his way to make fans happy. He signs autographs, shakes hands and replies to fans after they speak to him. He's definately someone to admire.

Yes, he is the opposite of Tiger! Try getting Tiger to sign an autograph... unless, of course, it is on an endorsement contract!

Phil played great but I will be honest I really don't like him. He deserved the win at the Masters though.

When he played in Charlotte he rented a house from a friend of ours and well lets just say he isn't what he seems. They won't rent to him ever again.

Really? Did he trash the place or something?

My aunt lives in Hilton Head and she has worked several tournaments and has always said Phil is great and also Freddie Couples, super nice. She said Tiger is very stand offish and so is Jack Nicklaus. Her favorite golfer person she has met working the tournaments is Arnold Palmer.

Pretty much - They set up house keeping to come in and twice during the week to change the sheets and clean towel etc.

They called her the second night they were there demanding clean towels. She told them were the linen closet was....they had used those towels already. They used all her towels. They said they wanted the maid to come by and bring them clean towels immediately.

When they got home the place was a wreck...stains on the carpet in the bedrooms (from the kids), dirty dishes filled the sink etc. It was just a mess and it had only been 2 days since the housekeeper was there.

I have heard Fred Couples and Jack Nicklaus were nice as well. I have actually heard that Tiger is nice but is all business during golf tournaments. I think that has changed though since recent events. My husband said Tiger was acknowledging the crowd this past weekend and he used to never do that.

You never really know how people are.

this post intrigued me so i did some research. Phils nickname on tour is FIGJAM, which means **** im good, just ask me. he was voted by his peers as one of the most hated athletes in a GQ article from 2006 along with folks like barry bonds, kobe bryant and terrell owens. other tour members have uses such phrases as "phony as a 3 dollar bill" when describing him. i was shocked at this information but it seems to be legit................................http://www.gq.com/sports/profiles/200601/most-hates-athletes..............

I'm shocked. Seriously. I've never heard this. The sports reporters and Golf Channel guys always say what a nice guy he is. Of course all that was from awhile ago, maybe it was a phase and he has lost his cockiness, he hasn't been doing so well since the 2006 Masters.

Phil use to be as intense as Tiger is on and off the golf course, but it wasn't getting him anywhere, majors wise. A few years ago, I heard Phil in an interview with who I can't remember, but he talked about a discussion he had had with Byron Nelson. Byron told him that a smile was worth a million dollars. In the interview he said that from that point forward he vowed to be more accessible to the fans, sign autographs and smile more. Since then, he's won several majors, and it truly looks like he has become a changed person.

I read the thread title.
A great day in Augusta? Augusta, Maine? They passed the state budget?

I find this interesting because I think the same thing is happening with Tiger. It is almost like they feel like they are on top of the world and can do anything and get away with it. Money, Power and Fame....then something bad happens and it is a kick in the butt...they are human like everyone else. They will be held accountable for their mistakes.

I'm sorry but I don't think that Tiger has truly changed. He's still throwing out the GD bombs on the golf course for all of the kids who look up to him to enjoy. The media has gotton to the point where they have to turn off the sound every time he hits the ball. A friend of mine followed him around a few years ago at the Masters and he said he had to leave because Tiger's language was so bad. My friend who has tickets to the Masters each year, followed Tiger for a few holes on Sunday and said that he heard several choice words from Tiger so he stayed behind and started following Phil for the rest of the round. There's no doubt he's sorry about what happened. Sorry he got caught.

His affairs aside in which there is no excuse for, I personally don't feel any athlete should be held accountable for the words they say in the heat of competition, baring that said words aren't directed at officials, fans or other players...Step onto a football field or hockey ice and you will hear worse, much worse. Heck watch an MLB game and you will hear and lip read way worse than GD. When someone is in the zone and adrenaline is pumping rationality and censors go out the window.....Athletes play to win it's their job to win, so if you want to criticize and pass judgment on their off the field activities feel free but as long as they are competing at high levels and giving it everything they have on the field just hit mute or don't watch.

IN the past I have even seen everyone's golden boy of the hour Phil Mickelson say things when he has hit a bad ball......It's just words, we're not talking Ron Artest running into stands and beating up fans here we're talking harmless indirect words.....

In any case I watched some replays online of Phil's performance and I must say he came to play this past weekend, talk about pure skill and determination, he wanted to win and he took it. You could see the "2nd place is the 1st loser" mentality burning in his eyes, which is something I greatly admire and respect in an athlete on any level.

That may be true for MLB, and NFL but we are talking about golf. You can't compare the sports. Tiger's behavior on the course is unacceptable. He said he would change, and didn't.

Perhaps he needs to read the following story from Arnold Palmer and learn a few things...

"Let me give you another example of how fortunate I was to have such parents when I was a boy. Once I was playing in some kind of a junior tournament in western Pennsylvania and hadn’t yet learned to curb my youthful temper. I was playing badly and throwing an occasional club. When it was over and we were in the car heading home, I realized that the atmosphere was decidedly cool. Before long, Pap turned to me and, in no uncertain terms told me: “If you ever throw a club again, I’ll take them away from you. This game is for gentlemen, and gentlemen learn to control themselves.” It was a very important lesson that has been so valuable to me all my life, and I say the same to any youngster, or adult, for that matter, on whom this shoe fits. " -- Arnold Palmer

As reprehensible and despicable as his off the golf course activities have been, I feel that it's really none of the presses or our business what he does. It tells us who he really is though and that's a shame. I lose a lot of respect for his wife for staying with the creep. That being said, as I said before, it's really not any of our business. What he does on the golf course, throwing profanity around, knowing the TV and children are watching his every move is a problem that he and the media need to deal with in a proper manner.
