Just a couple things I wanted to say:
Perception is reality. If many see Tiger in a negative light on the golf course then he should address it unless he just doesn't care.

Secondly - It is the presses and publics business what Tiger does off the course. It became our business when he started endorsing products we buy. We need to know what he stands for in order to know if we should buy those products. If he was just a golfer and didn't endorse products then I'd agree...It wouldn't be any of our business.

Just my opinion.

i does not seem to matter if it is print media, television, radio or apparently discussion forums...............a conversation about any golfer morphs into a Tiger Woods discussion. its like the headline i read once the day after someone else won a tournament....it read......."Tiger Loses". the winner was not mentioned till the second paragraph........i had the Masters Online streaming in my office last week and everyone and i mean everyone who walked in said the same thing.........hows Tiger doing........i wanted to puke. i reminded them there was about a 75 other guys playing and they just gave me a blank stare and shrugged their shoulders.

I think this is mostly because most people don't watch golf, but they can't help but have been following Tigers drama. I've been a golf fan for years, so I know the players and the game, I bet if you asked most people in your office, they could name maybe one, maybe none, other players in the Masters. As for the media....well, Tiger sells papers. I was annoyed with the Golf Channel. Their audience is golf fans and they STILL talked about Tiger a ridiculous amount. Poor Phil got hardly any coverage until his double eagles. They even did this stupid breakdown of Tiger. "Tiger arrives at Augusta at 1:43pm." "Tiger holds a press conference at 3:30pm" "Tiger goes out to hit his first practice balls at 5:15pm" -

His affairs aside in which there is no excuse for, I personally don't feel any athlete should be held accountable for the words they say in the heat of competition, baring that said words aren't directed at officials, fans or other players...Step onto a football field or hockey ice and you will hear worse, much worse. Heck watch an MLB game and you will hear and lip read way worse than GD. When someone is in the zone and adrenaline is pumping rationality and censors go out the window.....Athletes play to win it's their job to win, so if you want to criticize and pass judgment on their off the field activities feel free but as long as they are competing at high levels and giving it everything they have on the field just hit mute or don't watch.

IN the past I have even seen everyone's golden boy of the hour Phil Mickelson say things when he has hit a bad ball......It's just words, we're not talking Ron Artest running into stands and beating up fans here we're talking harmless indirect words.....

In any case I watched some replays online of Phil's performance and I must say he came to play this past weekend, talk about pure skill and determination, he wanted to win and he took it. You could see the "2nd place is the 1st loser" mentality burning in his eyes, which is something I greatly admire and respect in an athlete on any level.

There is no comparison here. I've been to 100's of football and baseball games and I've never heard one word of profanity. No doubt that there's plenty, but the fans are far removed from the fields. Golf is supposed to be a gentlemen's game and the fan's are practically on top of them while they play.

not to be disagreeable but if you go to a pro football game and want to hear profanity you need look no further than the fans next to you.

I agree completely. That's just part of the price of the ticket. You know that going in. You don't hear it on TV during football, baseball, basketball games or Hockey matches. I've sure heard it from Tiger when the TV didn't shut the sound down quick enough. Now we can all just read his lips.

Golf is still different from football, basketball, ect...I've been lucky enough to go to a few tournaments and I've heard a few choice words, from the players and sometimes a fan, but it was rare and mumbled under the breath, unlike Tiger, who says them loud and throws his clubs around too. It's just not something you see/hear too much of in professional golf, except for Tiger who seems to think it should be okay for him to do just because he's Tiger.

He said he would TRY. Can you quit your bad habits immediately? No. Because if you could, then they wouldn't be habits. Give him time.

How about buying products because it actually is a good watch, or because you get a better shave? Do you follow the personal lives of all the nameless actors that make commercials for various products? No offense, but I find it silly to base your decision to buy a razor, or watch, or car, or whatever it is that you're buying on whether or not a man is cheating on his wife or cursing at a golf tournament. I could see if he was peddling relationship advice, but he is not selling anything that has to do with morals.

If his endorsement wasn't important Nike wouldn't be paying him a Gozillion dollars. Nike, Gillette and other sponsors know Tiger Woods's image sells their products. Maybe not as much anymore.
